On January 27, 1967, a freak accident during a routine test killed astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee. At the conclusion of the investigation, fellow astronaut Frank Borman testified to Congress that his friends were killed by a “failure of imagination.” As he said, nobody -- including himself -- imagined that a test of the capsule, performed on the ground, could be so catastrophic. We heard the “failure of imagination” phrase again last week, when acting Secret Service director Ronald Rowe testified about the assassination attempt on former President Donld Trump. He said that the Secret Service’s performance on July 13th amounted to

The good news is that Debby is moving fast (13 mph) and getting faster. Less time for the buzzsaw is a good thing, regardless of intensity. (snip)Remember, you are in control right now, not Debby. She takes control tomorrow. There is no need for panic or dark imaginings. Calm, prudent preparations should be taken if you are in the zone of uncertainty. A lot of change in impact zone can happen quickly with these northerly moving storms. What follows below are less discussed things to consider

Both groups are backed by Iran, which has sworn revenge. Biden will also speak to Jordan’s King Abdullah II, the White House said,

Shortly after Friday’s anemic jobs report came out, the stock market tumbled, recession fears rose, and the Biden-Harris administration issued another Pollyannish report about how great the economy is doing – this time with bigger and bolder lies. Not only did just 114,000 jobs get created in July, which was well below economists’ expectations, but the jobless rate went up for the fourth consecutive month to 4.3% as 352,000 joined the unemployment lines. That’s not exactly “Morning in America.” It gets worse. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also admitted that it had overestimated the job gains in both May and June by a total of 29,000.

One mayoral hopeful isn’t very high on the city’s effort to crack down on illegal pot shops. City Comptroller Brad Lander is launching a probe into rival Mayor Eric Adams’ high-profile “Operation Padlock” program that has closed about 800 unlicensed cannabis shops in the city since mid-May. Lander announced the investigation into Operation Padlock in an Aug.1 letter to city Sheriff Anthony Miranda — two days after officially announcing his bid to run against Adams in the Democratic primary for mayor. City Comptroller Brad Lander’s letter said the investigation “will review the department’s enforcement of laws barring the unlicensed retail sale of cannabis, and its fiscal impact on the City.”

This decision may also affect the political makeup of Congress and state legislatures in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas—the states within the jurisdiction of the 5th Circuit—moving dozens of seats from Democrat to Republican.
