Joe Biden had his Nevada trip cut short by a COVID diagnosis that came when the president announced he would exit the race if a medical emergency forced him out. Biden is now on his way back to Delaware, where he’ll be kept from the spotlight as large swaths of the Democratic Party are putting the screws on him to exit the race. What a remarkable coincidence on both fronts. The rushed virtual roll call before the Democratic National Convention that would have made Biden’s nomination official has been delayed.

Forty-four years ago, Ronald Reagan asked the most devastating question in presidential-campaign politics. "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" he asked in reference to the Jimmy Carter presidency, an utter disaster economically and on foreign policy. That question crystallized an American electorate tired of being told to get used to decline, and it touched off an economic and military revival that eventually ended the Cold War. Tonight, the theme for the Republican national convention is "Make America Strong Again," a slogan that got a broad sweep in the speeches from the stage. Nearly two-thirds of Democrats say President Joe Biden should withdraw from the presidential race and let his party nominate a different candidate, according to a new poll, sharply undercutting his post-debate claim that “average Democrats” are still with him even if some “big names” are turning on him. The new survey by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, conducted as Biden works to salvage his candidacy two weeks after his debate flop, also found that only about 3 in 10 Democrats are extremely or very confident that he has the mental capability to serve effectively as president, down slightly from 40% in an AP-NORC poll in February.

Biden was in turn strongly against and stridently for abortion, a righteous Vietnam dove and then a stern Iraq hawk, a friend of racist Democratic senators before becoming a promoter of compensatory quotas for racial minorities.
