As the death toll rises, debate is raging over whether bad organization, weather or gate-crashing pilgrims are to blame for more than 1,000 reported deaths in Saudi Arabia during the annual Hajj religious gathering. Arabic-language social media has been flooded this week with shocking images from Saudi Arabia. The pictures and videos show people who were undertaking their once-in-a-lifetime Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca collapsed on the side of the road or slumped in wheelchairs, apparently close to death or dead. They are dressed in traditional pilgrim's white, their faces covered with cloths.

These Hajj deaths are nothing new. They were reported even in the 1850's by Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton in his account of his journey - disguised as a Muslim - to Medina and Mecca. His accounts are interesting and, at times, funny. Lots of people on the Hajj are in no condition or too old to travel in the extreme conditions. Thus the deaths. In former times, marauders and brigands were also a major threat.

I'm reminded of a joke about 1,000 lawyers at the bottom of the sea. Does this make me a bad person?

Every year we hear about the deaths during the Haj. Whether it is the weather or people trampling each other to get to places the urgent need to fulfill the Islamic ritual is greater than their regard for human life.

#8 makes a good point. Can we get Just Stop Oil to go paint the Kaaba? Seems appropriate given that the Saudis are such large exporters of oil.

#9, they are far too chickenshiite to get anywhere near a local mosque much less a Muslim country.
I remember reports from decades ago about thousands of people being trampled to death during the Hajj. SSDD

Islam is the only major religion that has no respect for human life. So why is there an outcry about 1,000 deaths? One of the reasons that Muslim women have so many children is so they can afford to lose one or two to jihad.

Prospective is everything.
Some see death without cause and mourn.
Others see death in the cause and celebrate.

Someone who goes to exercise for hours in the sun, at 125F, is solely responsible for health consequences. Not the black rock, not health authorities, not other attendees.

Having lived there for a number of years, I learned that according to the locals nothing can happen without Allah willing it which is also associated with Allah being the ultimate cause - reason why the term "inshallah" (Allah willing) is used so often in Arab countries in general, and Saudi Arabia in particular . Along with inshallah is the word "maleesh" ("so it goes" - a term of indifference). Whether it is one or thousands dead, "inshallah maleesh" ("God did it, so it goes."). The ultimate in fatalism!

#15 is correct. The islamic interpretation of 'Allah' is that he essentially is transcendent to a fault. It's almost as if Allah doesn't really care about his own creation--just don't tick him off (and his "messenger"). It's akin to a master/slave relationship rather than a father and his children. Consequently, islam's belief system breeds fatalism and an indifferent attitude towards humanity.

The article just had to bring in climate change. If 1,000 people had frozen to death during a rare cold snap, it would have still been blamed on climate change. Apparently, the climate zealots must have a chip implanted in their brain that makes it mandatory that they blame everything from smaller sheep testicles to Hemorrhoids on climate change. Their stories sound like Babylon Bee parodies.
