California’s governor wants taxpayers to spend $33,000 on an official portrait of him, even as Democratic lawmakers fume over Newsom’s “absurd” $20 million proposal to honor the state’s living former governors — an exclusive club of which he’ll soon be a member. Funding for the proposed painting is included in Newsom’s proposed 2026-27 budget under “Governor’s Portrait,” which says the money would pay for the “traditional painting of the Governor’s portrait” to be displayed in the State Capitol alongside portraits of every other California governor.

More than 860,000 fireworks are expected to be launched from the National Mall during next [this] year’s Fourth of July celebration for the US’ 250th birthday, an amount that would surpass the current world record for the largest fireworks display. The current record was set during a New Year’s Eve celebration in Manila in 2016, when roughly 809,000 fireworks were used during a show that lasted more than an hour. The planned DC celebration would far exceed the city’s traditional Fourth of July fireworks shows, which typically launch between 17,000 and 20,000 shells.
The celebration will be organized by Freedom 250, a public-private partnership launched last December.

Since the start of President Donald Trump’s second term, Congress has passed only one major piece of legislation. While the “One Big Beautiful Bill” was a notable accomplishment, it should not have been the only legislative victory for the Republican Congress. Kerry Sheron, the 69-year-old owner of the ‘Trump house’ in Southern California, has died after being brutally beaten by a Navy veteran.
Sheron, an Army veteran, was violently assaulted by 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler in an unprovoked attack on May 20 outside of Sheron’s home.
