A little more than a year after announcing an ambitious plan to co-develop a lineup of affordable electric vehicles, General Motors and Honda are scrapping the deal — or at least just that one aspect of the deal. Announced in April 2022, the plan was to build a series of affordable EVs on GM’s flexible EV platform with its Ultium-branded battery packs. At the time, GM and Honda said they expected to begin production of “millions” of these affordable EVs by 2027. “After studying this for a year, we decided that this would be difficult as a business, so at the moment, we are ending development of an affordable EV,”

Meanwhile the Chinese are furiously building such cheap EVs and will probably not only dominate the market but also use that dominance to destroy our domestic car manufacturers who are concentrating on very expensive ($70,000+) high-margin models at the same time they are committing to halting the production of gas vehicles that Americans still want.

Who is going to buy a cheap EV when there is no reliable infrastructure to charge them? Who is going to buy a cheap EV when there is no mass consumer demand for them?
The background to this decision is that the is no discernable profitable market for them. The government (taxpayer) subsidizd EV market has collapsed in the United States. There is an obvious market for them (see Tesla) but it's wealthy and very niche. The collapse has become very noticeable.

Lately there have appeared videos from some in the top management of Honda, who are not sanguine about the future of the planned all electric world fleet. They not only suppose but know for certain that governments' electric pipe dream is not achievable, and all efforts toward the e-future are wasted. "Green" was just a bad idea to begin with. Too expensive, and really not Green, when everything is considered. Gasoline, diesel, and av gas will be around for a long time to come, because there's no substitute for them. Not yet. Although the suits at Honda Motor Company appear to have wised up--and may save their business long term--I hold no similar hopes for General Motors. They're fatally infected with Green politics. Gorons. "Liberals." They'll pay for their credulousness.

Actually I can see a viable market for a cheap but reliable EV like a glorified golf cart as a second car used only for local shopping runs, etc. You wouldn't need a nationwide grid for that or other expensive infrastructure. Once the next generation of solid-state batteries arrives, this becomes a genuine market. ICE and hybrids will continue to be the primary vehicles for long commutes and general purpose use.

So they admit their vehicles are unaffordable and must be moved by a taxpayer funded $7500 tax credit which only well-off people can claim. They're just showoff toys.

WW III began several years ago when China became a world power. It is an economic war not a war as we have known it. Our decline began under W and accelerated under Obama. Trump tried to reverse the decline in American economic power so China/Soros/Dems made sure he wasn't relected. China will dominate the EV market and more American jobs will disappear.
Reagan killed Russia economically and wounded the USA.
China is winning the economic WWIII.

There are already affordable electric vehicles....suitable for driving short distances at low speeds with no sides...on golf courses.
EVs are 150 year old "technology of the future"....much like fusion powered cars.

Between China, people not wanting EVs, and now the UAW strike, no wonder Honda bailed out on the deal. Honda does not want to get mixed up with the UAW getting into their business and dictating what Honda can and cannot do because of UAW greed.

The concept of an internal combustion engine goes back to the Roman Empire - - but the engine wasn't fully developed until the late 19th century.
Amazingly - - with all the developments in technology over the past 135 years - - no one has been able to devise a more efficient and powerful small engine - - and certainly golf carts aren't going to do the trick.

Have they finally figured out that nobody wants them, cheap or expensive, except the climate hipsters who are too dense to realize that more harm to the environment is caused by mining metals for the batteries and generating electricity for the non-existent grid? I'm surprised that GM was smart enough to stop this disaster before it happened. China is going to be blindsided by the low sales performance in the US but the Euros will probably cooperate.

Gov. Brylcreem is even now in China getting everything set up for them to blanket our country with their cheap EVs.

Having been involved in the EV manufacturing the vehicles are viable as local commuters but for long distance and work like delivery, public transport or construction the durability is not there as rain, snow, mud, chuckholes all take their toll on the sealed construction. And the obstacle to a cheaper version will be to lower the cost of the batteries which need a heavy duty construction to prevent exposure to atmosphere. Go to Europe and see the signs in the parking garages banning EV's. The question then becomes when you buy your cheap Chicom knock off are you are going to park one in your garage?

#13, I wasn't literally thinking golf cart because of the open sides, but more like the new Japanese "kei car" which you can see here: https://electrek.co/2023/10/25/big-in-japan-heres-why-this-tiny-kei-electric-car-is-all-the-rage/. Costs about $13,000. Perfect for a local runabout.

Ford, along with the CCP, broke ground for a huge EV battery plant in my small historical town. Whitmer generously donated $4.5 billion taxpayer dollars to help them do it. The UAW is looking at losing tons of member dues because of lost jobs due to EV manufacturing. They are demanding UAW involvement in the battery production. Suddenly Ford has stopped all construction on the plant, deeming it ‘unprofitable’. If Trump wins the election the subsidies will stop. The EV market is very close to collapsing completely. Kamala Harris’s beloved yellow buses will go back to burning diesel.

Kalifornia is trying to pass a regulation that all EVs will have 'bidirectional' charging. The Kalifornia envirowackos want to be able to take the energy in your EV when there is a 'crisis.' Kalifornia has several permanent areas of crisis. They refuse to build any more power generation, and are actively tearing down current power generation. So, when they deem it 'necessary' they want to take it from the EVs. Just imagine, you plug in your EV expecting to drive in the morning, but the government has decided they need it more than you do.

Re #4, #13 etc. I have one of those “upscale” EVs. My lake cabin is in a private lake community and everyone has at least one golf cart. Mine is also equipped to use on public roads (turn signals, brake lights, etc). They are quite common in lots of communities. You wouldn’t want to drive one on a busy road but they are ok for short trips in a suburban setting.

You forgot one important fact...poster #1....the made in china electric cars must have customers...and I don't think the Chinese people can afford cars when they can hardly afford food....china is in economic turmoil and that's why XI is pushing his weight around....as Bud Light learned the hard way...the customers are always important....

This is a pincer attack on Americans' freedom of mobility. Make EVs unaffordable and regulate internal-combustion cars out of existence.
