The embarrassing impasse in the House of Representatives has finally ended, as Louisiana’s Mike Johnson has been elected Speaker. So, who is Mike Johnson, and why was he finally able to succeed where several more notable House members failed?
I suspect that the answer has more to do with desperation than anything else. The Republican Party was made to look ridiculous, not so much by the party’s divisions as by the utter lack of party loyalty and discipline that was revealed by one failed vote after another. Most likely, Republicans coalesced behind Johnson–a little-known commodity, who has never been a committee chairman–to stop the bleeding.

Mike Johnson is a great choice He is MAGA and was one of the lawyers for Ukraine’s impeachment of Donald Trump. May the wind be behind your sails Speaker Johnson.

Prayers for Mike Johnson’s leadership…
[From a former N’awlins resident, and member of First Baptist Church, Napoleon @St. Charles Ave, where we served hot chocolate and lemonade the two weeks before actual Mardi Gras.
The first person who sat down at our coffee/hot chocolate corner table was from Australia, and that evening subsequently prayed for Salvation.
May it ever be, Lord.
Pray for the Mike Johnson and Peace of Jerusalem.
[My mid-LA Pastor no doubt knows him.]
For Your Glory.

The House finally has a Speaker and probably a good one. They also have a tarnished reputation that is going to take some work to rebuild.

My perspective on the process is different. I wasn't bothered by the process, and it seems like the product makes the process worth it. No problem with what Gaetz did to rid us of McCarthy. Now that process was terrible; most of US knew McCarthy was a terrible choice, and we expected him to be the traitor that he was. This one revealed a bunch of RINOs, but it also showed that Pubs are not rubber stampers like the demons, even the RINOs. I don't see congress as the be all, so they can all go home and sit down somewhere (as they say). Maybe that's why I'm not embarrassed by their divisions, and ridiculous is relative. I don't like that the author thinks that being little known and never running a committee is a bad thing. The last speakers since forever all had one or both in their resumes, and look how terrible they were. We need people less good at politics and better at representing we the people and following the Constitution.

Another profile I read describes Speaker Johnson as a Christian, but with a spine of steel, and full awareness of where we are in America. And a man of intellect. (Unstated, but implied: he’s a man of character.)
If he can get a handle on the budget process (or lack of) and bury the continuing resolutions, we may see a u-turn to the America we used to know.

#4 is right. The other recent speakers have been nothing but POLITICIANS with their hand in the same pile as Biden's. And as long as the R's were fragmented, these democrat made bills werent going thru McCarthy's office to pass.

Back in the dinosaur days I was the production control guy at a major Air Force base. All night and all weekend I would answer emergency building maintenance calls and send repair crews. It was maddening.
Then one day and excavator dug up all my phone lines. All communications were out (it was pre-cell phone days). I couldn't even notify anyone that I couldn't notify anyone. No work got done for two full days. It was the best two days I ever spent there.
Thats how I view the House being shut down.

In my opinion, the intransigent dems repeatedly chose party over country and that resulted a atrong republican speaker? Being elected. Thank you, dems

We all knew the dems were going to vote in lockstep for who they were told to vote for, that’s what they always do. We’ve seen it done for decades. Meanwhile, our selection process was contentious and messy. That’s what happens when individuals have to make consensus. I never saw that “chaos” the mam harped on about. All in all I’m proud of our side. Maybe God answered our prayers, time will tell, but I feel good about the results.
And, that McCarthy didn’t slither back in, he sure was trying to though.

As a Louisianian, I guess I'm proud they picked Mike Johnson, but I'm waiting to see him in action. He sounded too nice in his acceptance speech and the dems and GOPe/RINO's will take that as a sign that he's a pushover. Time will tell.

I saw a picture of him surrounded by House members - in prayer that he asked for. A good beginning. We need more like Matt Gaetz.

Hinderaker is the king of back handed compliments. It’s what smug elitist do when they don’t get their way. They are always on the outside pointing fingers and making negative comments instead of actually researching the guy to see what he is made of. I do not believe it was an act of desperation that got him elected. I believe finally something resembling sanity prevailed and that God had a hand in it. One thing I have noticed about Rinos is that they are very similar in their actions with democrats when they don’t get their way. Attack, attack, attack. We have a country to save and these nitwits believe that if you are not like them, you are inferior. My suggestion is for the Rinos to just sit down and shut up for once and allow Mike Johnson the space to prove his worth. If you love the country, you might just be presently surprised. I doubt it though, you are in a perpetual state of elitism which precludes any possibility that anyone not just like you is unworthy. Regardless of what you think, I believe the majority of Americans are going to like this guy because they are fed up with democrat-lite.

It's not embarrassing. It was a process needed to replace an unfaithful (to his word) controversial selection, McCarthy. I'm satisfied.

A few things. . .I guess I'm glad Mike Johnson is speaker, but the proof is in the pudding which we haven't seen yet.
I thought the House of Representatives was supposed to be kinda messy where reps hashed out raw details, while the Senate was supposed to be more even keeled and sage, if you will. So, the election of Mike Johnson as Speaker was messy, but well worth it if he succeeds in addressing the concerns of the people, particularly Republican voters.
Lastly, I don't think the rinos who opposed Jordan should be getting any sort of a pass. That is, they exposed themselves to their voters and should be unceremoniously primaried next Spring!

This is my first exposure to Mike Johnson. Christian, constitutional lawyer, America lover. We could have had far worse. Most of our Speakers, from both Parties, have been swamp dwelling snakes. Hoping Johnson can bring some sanity to the House. Now let’s get rid of McConnell.

One of the BEST outcomes of this process has been that the Republican RINOs who McCarty appointed to the House Appropriations Committee were thoroughly EXPOSED as being those who approve of BIG Givernment, BIG Spending, and NOT HONORING the agreements made before the 2020 elections to actually STOP the Continuing Resolutions and Omnibus bills where everyone threw their particular PORK into the pot and it kept getting U.S. further and and further into financial oblivion
Time or those to be voted out of office.... Its hard to believe that there wer NO Republicans who voted against Rep. Johnson to be the new Speaker-- Its a miracle!
Time is short since the 45-day McCarthy CR is about half over-- we will know in about 20 days if this really means what we hopefully think it means... Pray hard!

As with #4, the process doesn't bother me, the outcome is important. I saw the acceptance speech and it was great.
But do I have hope? As noted above, the Dims do as they're told. They were stony silent when mention of reducing expenditures was mentioned during the speech. They will 100% support The Party Line. So how powerful is the speaker ? Can he overcome that and balance the budget? Or was this just a rearrangement of the deck chairs?
McCarthy was supported by Trump. All the candidates were. So have we traded up or just traded? I have no problem with the process, but I still don't know Gaetz's motives. If the whole process was just politically motivated- Gaetz's rivalry with McCarthy- then we've been conned.
That said, the speech was great, he seems like the real deal, I am happy. I guess the magic he has to work is to get the Republicans to vote in lock step. Maybe he can; maybe the politics is over, exhausted.

Hindraker is a NeverTrumper, one of those sad "conservatives" that intensely cares what the Washington Uniparty folks and the DC media think and it molds his "thinking"....which is more following than thinking.
All the hyperventilating from this guy...."embarrassing impasse", "desperation", "made to look ridiculous", "stop the bleeding" is pure baloney.
This author is another one of those easily propagandized people who, when the Enemedia tells him that he should be embarrassed, and desperate, and that he's ridiculous, so, as instructed - he gets all upset.
I was never upset. Congress being shut down for a short time is NO problem. I think the last actually urgent thing that Congress did was declaring war in December of 1941. Congress being out for three weeks is like a toothache stopping for three weeks.
Getting rid of McCarthy was a good thing. And as much time as it took, it had a huge advantage for the party. It identified the rotten, backstabbing RINO pukes who need to be gotten rid of ASAP. Assuming that Johnson winds up being what he appears to be and has been for years according to reliable sources, IMO, this will be a good thing. Getting a Trump supporter into the Speaker's position is a really good thing. McCarthy was, like McConnell, a guy who spent more time blocking MAGA stuff and helping the Dem/Uniparty pukes than he did trying to actually accomplish anything good for the nation.

Why was it embarrassing, John? Because we saw a democratic republic in action? Because, unlike democrats, the Republican Party is comprised of independent thinkers and does not move in lockstep with their masters? Because some representatives took measures to oust a lying, backstabbing, dishonorable member from his post, after warning him it would happen? The only embarrassing thing about this whole thing is those who were embarrassed by it.

remember when the democrats wore themselves out on Bork, then on Ginsburg, and then as to that nomination Kennedy got through, and on the next one they were so worn out that Scalia got through 98-0. I think this is similar. Hakeem Jeffries and his merry band deposed McCarthy and they ended up with the guy who defended Trump from impeachment successfully, supported Trump re the illegally low voting standards in six states, wants to return the chamber to regular order in appropriations, and so on. Scalia story one more tiime.

I'd like to be optimistic about Mike Johnson's election; a conservative future depends on our ability to focus on defeating Democrats. But, with the strong animus fostered among the two major factions of the Republican party, as again starkly revealed these past few weeks, I'm more doubtful than ever we'll see it.
