Free Advice for Putin: ‘Make Peace,
You Fool’

As Vladimir Putin embarks on his Plan B — a massive military operation to try to grab at least a small bite of eastern Ukraine to justify his misbegotten war — I thought: Who could give him the best advice right now? I settled on one of America’s premier teachers of grand strategy, John Arquilla, who recently retired as a distinguished professor of defense analysis at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. When I called Arquilla and asked him what he’d tell Putin today, he didn’t hesitate: “I would say, ‘Make peace, you fool.’”
This is also known as the first rule of holes: When you’re in one, stop digging.
I did not think that making peace was a viable option for Putin before this, I thought that he needed to win. The fact that Thomas Friedman offers this advice convinces me that I was correct.

While I have no doubt that both the NYT and Friedman are sincerely interested in helping Putin to succeed, being dedicated totalitarian Communists to the core, both the NYT and Mr. Friedman have zero credibility in ANY arena to offer advise, as a general rule.

If only there were some sort of international organization of countries where nations could work out their differences and avoid war. Maybe call it “Together Countries” or something catchy like that.

When is the nyt going to denounce its support of stalin during his mass murders? The nyt has no standing for any holier than thou pronouncements. Have they taken the little duranty pulitzer off their stained walls yet?
They might want to think about stopping the mass murders taking place in NY.

Is it make peace or does Friedman simply want Russia to be subservient to US/NATO. The Minsk Accords was an attempt to settle the issue but were not implemented. NATO expansion to the borders of Russia is the equivalent to missiles in Cuba (we seem to have forgotten that).
Again, this is not really about Ukraine from a Western perspective. Ukraine is simply the means to weaken and destroy Russia. With the agreements and strengthening bond between Russia and China the US is losing its "hegemony". The financial system created and controlled by the US is about to implode. It is not possible to continue to prop it up via the reckless printing of money. The petrodollar is on the way out and this means the US Dollar will lose value and reserve status. The US cannot contain and dictate events in Asia with the increasing strength and influence of China. The plan is to weaken Russia and then go after China (cannot do both at the same time). The reality is we are undergoing a major shift globally concerning finance and geopolitical dominance.
I do not believe Russia is going to take a knee and bow down to the US and NATO demands to obey.

A guarantee that Ukraine won't join NATO and a complete stop to the hostilities is a good idea for everyone.

This doesn't end until either 1 Russia wins, 2 the Ukraine defeats Russia, 3 a face saving agreement is signed or 4 "Russia" forces Putin to quit.
My money is on 1 or 3. However, if the war continues with Russian forces taking the losses that it is, #4 becomes a real possibility.

Actually, it is Thomas Friedman offering someone else's free advice. Someone who doesn't have his head up his rectum, as our dear Thomas does.

Maybe you should give this advice to the Biden administration, who have made zero efforts at making peace.

Let's see how many Russians Putin is willing to sacrifice for his global aspirations. Let's see how many Ukrainians Zelensky is willing to sacrifice by being a pawn for Western global interests. Let's see how many people get sacrificed in this worthless war. Somewhere the devil is laughing. The people of Russia and Ukraine better understand: This isn't your war. This is a war brought to you by a bunch of globalist elites lusting after wealth and power.

Milton was the only Friedman worth listening to.
Putin can't stop, I'm thinking. Win or lose, and "win" looks sketchy, there is nothing left for Russia except a long demographic slide into irrelevence. And every young Russian man who dies or is wounded is one who won't be going home to make a baby. And the young Russians who are leaving the Russian police state and rust capitol of the world won't help you there either. That leaves you the alcoholic, crotchety old jingoist fools who believe what state television tells them.
In other words, Russia is doomed and this just accelerates it.

I don't care how much military equipment is given to Ukraine, it's over. Yes they are putting up a great fight, it's their homeland. But at what cost do you keep fighting. Your cities are leveled, no water, no food, no electricity and men, women and children are being slaughtered. Yea, Russia is losing

FTA: “I recently reread Barbara Tuchman’s ‘The Guns of August’” — about how the great powers stumbled into World War I — said Arquilla. “It’s a cautionary tale that remains relevant.”
You bet it is...the US needs to get involved. We're "Leader of the (NATO) Free Loaders!" We've got to do something!!! What we need to do is heed Washington's Farewell advice, detach from NATO, and end the "excessive dislike" of Russia no less than the lessening our "excessive partiality" toward the rest of Europe. Let the effete Euros put up their own defense umbrella after 75 years of the US doing the heavy lifting "over there."
The "enemy" is China, and that threat is primarily commercial, not military. Time to rescind the treaty terms that de-militarized Japan, draw down our "UN" presence in Korea, and force Australia, New Zealand and the SE Asia nations to figure their mutual defense out.

My guess is that Russia will keep fighting to at least get the Dombas region under its firm control and build a land bridge down to Crimea, which they will never give back. Putin will declare the operation a success and keep a low-grade war going well into the future.

And here I thought that Friedman was dead.
If he still writes for the Times, he might as well be.
At least until the zombie apocalypse.

Well, yeah. A stopped clock is right twice a day. The person quoted by Friedman (this isn't his own thinking, you know that) is very interesting.
