German conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz appears poised to win the country’s election Sunday, while the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party places second despite making gains. Chancellor Olaf Scholz conceded defeat, calling the election results “bitter,” The Associated Press reported. Scholz’s Social Democratic Party placed third, behind the AfD, in its worst result in a national election in decades. With more than 200 constituencies’ results declared, Reuters reported that the conservative party earned 28.8 percent of the vote with the AfD trailing at 20.9 percent. New York — Starbucks announced Monday it will lay off over 1,000 corporate workers and cut complex and unpopular drinks from its menu in an effort to turn around lagging sales and revamp the coffee chain.
Starbucks is cutting some Frappuccino blended drinks, Royal English Breakfast Latte and White Hot Chocolate as part of its effort to simplify operations and shrink its menu.
