The California legislature passed a bill banning local governments from adopting voter identification laws for local elections. California does not require identification to vote, but earlier this year, the City of Huntington Beach approved a voter ID requirement for municipal elections starting in 2026. This bill would override Huntington Beach’s policy.
“An overwhelming body of evidence proves that voter ID laws only subvert voter turnout and create barriers to law abiding voters,” wrote bill author State Sen. Dave Min, D-Irvine.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. officially lost his U.S. Secret Service (USSS) protection on Monday, just days after his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race.
Kennedy's press secretary confirmed the change in a statement to CBS News. Kennedy had gone through a long process to receive USSS protection in the first place, with his initial requests being denied earlier in the cycle.
It was not until the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump in July that President Biden ordered that Kennedy receive Secret Service protection as well.

Former 2024 Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced Sunday that he will “actively” campaign with 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Kennedy suspended his campaign and endorsed Trump Friday afternoon, later joining forces with the former president that evening at a campaign rally in Phoenix, Arizona. Kennedy told “Fox News Sunday” host Shannon Bream that Trump will join forces with other Democrats as the election cycle progresses.
“I’ll be campaigning actively,” Kennedy told Bream. “President Trump is going to make a series of announcements of other Democrats who are joining his campaign. And, you know, I wanna make America healthy again, and so does President Trump.”

Europe is experiencing a crisis evidenced by a “wave of populism” that threatens European universality, Pope Francis warned Saturday.
In a message to participants in the European Alpbach Forum, an Austrian nonprofit foundation advocating a strong and democratic Europe, the pontiff said that Europe is “experiencing a time of crisis,” a time “in which various populist movements are enjoying great popularity.”
In Europe, “as a result of this ‘wave’ of populism, some ideals have vanished and some principles, with regard to behavior towards the weaker members of society, have been sidelined,” he added.

Members of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s extended family called it a “betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear” on Friday after the independent presidential candidate announced that he was endorsing former President Trump.
“We want an America filled with hope and bound together by a shared vision of a brighter future,” Kerry Kennedy wrote in a statement alongside four of Kennedy’s siblings. “We believe in Harris and Walz. Our brother Bobby’s decision to endorse Trump today is a betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear.”
“It is a sad ending to a sad story,” they added.

What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
Because the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld California outlawing talk therapy for minors with unwanted same-sex attraction, it must likewise uphold Idaho's ban on invasive and potentially irreversible medical treatments to make gender-confused minors resemble the opposite sex, the Gem State's outside lawyer told a three-judge panel Thursday.
Alliance Defending Freedom senior counsel John Bursch invoked the 2013 Pickup precedent, celebrated at the time by LGBTQ activists for finding that California's SB 1172 does not violate the "fundamental parental right to make important medical decisions for their children"
