Political Assassination Attempts I Have Known

This is not the column I intended to post today. However, the column I did intend to post contained one paragraph relevant to today: “Don’t be surprised by anything that happens in this marathon, jumbled presidential campaign.” So, surprised we are not in this angry, turbulent period of U.S. history that someone or some group tried to assassinate a former president seeking to regain the job from its current occupant. As the Babylon Bee reported: Party that called Trump ‘Hitler’ for 8 years shocked as someone tries to assassinate him If I was still in the daily newspaper business today, I’d likely be writing some kind of news analysis or reconstruction now.

Last week, I ventured off to Toronto to do some sightseeing. On my journey back to Virginia I made a quick detour into Buffalo to visit the memorial at the McKinley assassination site. A lifelong student of all-things Presidential history, I pondered while there as to how that event so enormously affected the course of American history. Imagined how this country might have evolved, for better or worse, had Teddy Roosevelt never become President. Last night's events again reminded me of TR, this time the attempt on his life and how he insisted on finishing his speech before being treated for his wound. As epic as Trump's response was, it would have been even more epic if he had finished his speech, but his SS detail wasn't about to allow that and hustled him away. I do think Trump sealed the election last night, as the right and the middle will now rally around him. I would like to think the last night's event also would put an end to the left's nasty, overheated rhetoric towards their political opponents, but sadly, my gut tells me that while there might be a moratorium on their hateful bile spewing, it won't last, and within a couple of weeks they'll be right back to their same old nasty, hateful selves.

Good article and good reminder of what can happen if politics and hate combine. This attempted assassination of Trump is the result of his vilification by the left and their media. From Kathy Griffin, the so-called comedienne, holding up a mock-up of Trump's severed head to the constant drumbeat of Hitler, Hitler, Hitler today, that inevitably stirs up the nutjobs among us to do something violent.

The "ladies" of ABC's "The View" are really taking President Joe Biden's message on Sunday to heart in the wake of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. Biden urged Americans to “lower the temperature” and to remember "when we disagree, we are not enemies, we are neighbors, we are friends, co-workers, citizens and, most importantly, we are fellow Americans." The panel was discussing the Trump attempted assassination and specifically the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks. Ana Navarro, the supposed "Republican" on the panel, had this stunning take on what really is the cause behind the assassination attempt.

Former President Donald Trump exemplified a rare level of courage that few people are put in a position to show, on Saturday, moments after being shot by a would-be assassin, as he rose to his feet after wisely hitting the deck after being hit, likely saving his life. Trump defiantly pumped his fist in the air, multiple times, as he was ushered off the stage stage by Secret Service agents, as if to show the faithful and the world that he not only survived; but more importantly that he was more than ready to continue his campaign to unseat Joe Biden. On Sunday, Trump said in an exclusive interview

Former president Donald Trump has spoken out about the dismissal of the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case against him. The Republican nominee, who is currently in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for the Republican National Convention, sent a lengthy message via his account on Truth Social, sharing his thoughts on the dismissal and the government's continued prosecution against him. Trump's message to his followers was simple: It's time for the multiple cases against him to end and for the country to unite. Please stop and spare a thought for those on the political left. Bill Maher has affirmed he was appalled by the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump but qualified it by adding others have been metaphorically hurt as well. He opened his Saturday comedy show by stating, “I unequivocally denounce [the shooting], I don’t care what you think about that. Not funny. I’m sure that there will be jokes that people will make because they hate him so much that they wished it went he other way. Not for me.” Maher then continued that Trump may be the political winner at the ballot box

The nerve of Donald Trump, inciting that sc****g to shoot him by being literally Hitler, according to the regime media and the regime husk. And then his supporters shockingly dared to get mad about it – why aren’t they uniting around gun control, even though Trump was protected by guns and guns killed the sc****g, and even though guns are the only thing keeping Democrat-supported criminals and Democrat–supported tyranny at bay? But we know whose fault this is. And they know whose fault this is. And they’re going to lie about it anyway. This was inevitable. Even if this wasn’t a specific plot,

Before I start, I will acknowledge that most people on either side of the political divide are rightly outraged and concerned about Saturday’s assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump. Unfortunately, there are plenty of left-leaning members of the chattering class who are doing their very best to spin the incident in a way that advances their agenda. Shortly after footage of the shooting went viral on social media, leftists on various social media platforms began immediately pretending that the shooting was staged to help Trump’s campaign. In fact, there were so many floating this lie that the term “staged” was trending on X.

A few thoughts on the attempted assassination of President Trump last night limited to ten bullet points: • Ernest Hemingway famously defined courage as grace under pressure. President Trump displayed grace under pressure last night. Mr. President, you made us proud. • It was just Donald Trump who dodged a bullet last night. We all dodged a bullet. The anger and chaos that would have followed his successful assassination are unimaginable. Thank you, Lord for sparing us the ordeal. • It was moving to see the Secret Service agents in Trump’s detail immediately jump in to protect him with their bodies. As an organization, however, the Secret Service had better

To those who have been following American politics closely over the past decade, the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump is not a shock. Even the most cursory of glances at the political division in this country could tell you that this was a matter of when, not if. When Trump first came on the scene announcing his intention to run for president, Democratic politicians and members of the activist media did their level best to portray him as the second coming of Adolf Hitler and his supporters as modern-day Nazis. The effort to paint the right as a pernicious threat to “democracy” has not abated since 2016.

As if you needed another thing to worry about in the midst of the ongoing Biden crime crisis, the FBI is warning that a new trend has been developing among the criminal class. It's being called "jugging" and authorities warn that it is spreading rapidly, particularly in Baltimore and across the rest of Maryland. The practice involves aspiring thieves stationing themselves near ATMs or outside of banks and watching for people who may have made cash withdrawals to finish their business. Then they approach them, typically brandishing weapons, and rob them of the "jugs" of cash that were withdrawn. The Bureau reported more than twenty such incidents in

Law enforcement officials admitted it was “surprising” how the gunman was able to get so many shots off in the attempted assassination on former President Donald Trump before he was taken out by Secret Service snipers. During a press conference early Sunday, officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pennsylvania State Police deferred several questions about security to the Secret Service — who were notably absent. When asked if he was surprised at the number of shots the gunman was able to take at a former president, Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, said:

The gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump Saturday was identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, sources told The Post. Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pa., squeezed off shots — one of which grazed Trump in the ear — at an outdoor rally in Butler, just outside Pittsburgh. Sources said Crooks was planted on a roof of a manufacturing plant more than 130 yards away from the stage at Butler Farm Show grounds. He was killed by Secret Service snipers. An AR-style rifle was later recovered. Bethel Park is a village 40 miles south of where the Butler rally was held. Why Crooks fired on the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is unclear.

This announcement, expected in Nevada on Tuesday, addresses growing voter frustration over skyrocketing housing prices, especially in Nevada where citizens have experienced surges in housing costs, Biden aims to bolster his economic standing among voters. The proposal includes eliminating a tax benefit for landlords raising rents by over 5% annually, affecting those owning more than 50 units. This move seeks to protect tenants without discouraging new construction.

BUTLER, Pa. — The Secret Service blamed local police for failing to secure the rooftop from which gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump, insisting it was outside the perimeter the federal agency was tasked with protecting. Instead, securing and patrolling the factory grounds of AGR International Inc. — located about 130 yards from the stage where Trump was speaking Saturday — was the responsibility of local Pennsylvania police, Secret Service representative Anthony Gugliemi said, according to the New York Times. The Secret Service was only tasked with covering the grounds where Trump’s rally took place, with local police being recruited to assist with those efforts and
