CNN — Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema is leaving the Democratic Party and registering as a political independent, she told CNN’s Jake Tapper in an exclusive TV interview.
“I’ve registered as an Arizona independent. I know some people might be a little bit surprised by this, but actually, I think it makes a lot of sense,” Sinema said in a Thursday interview with Tapper in her Senate office.
“I’ve never fit neatly into any party box. I’ve never really tried. I don’t want to,” she added.

Given how badly she was treated by her party, I don't blame her.
Manchin, you're up. Ball is in your court.

Makes sense to me. Sinema is a maverick and her party treated her like dirt.

Publicity stunt. Sinema is a big government liberal and a gun grabber.

Being a Zonie, I watch her very carefully. She is one very smart and truly independent woman. Her dissatisfaction with the Democrat party has been simmering for a long time and she's had it with partisan politics. The timing of her announcement is curious. As far as I know, she hasn't made any commitments about caucusing.

Well now, that’s interesting. Officially, it changes the balance of power, but only if she decides not to vote in lockstep with Democrats, which she’s shown she won’t do that often. Gutsy.

Manchin better do the same or he will kiss his political career away. The dems have scammed him too many times and if he stays with them it will show how weak he is.

We’ll have to wait and see how she does before we celebrate. I seem to remember reading recently that she wants to give amnesty to a couple million DACA’s.

Not impressed. Either she is leaving her Party, or she isn't. Sitting on the Fence so she can be begged by Both Parties to be their Friend doesn't seem to me to be anything but a Stunt. She needs to make a decision! I think if she wants to be a Republican, she will be welcomed with open arms. If she just wants to "visit" Republicans from time to time leaves me cold and unimpressed!

Dems were planning to savage her in the 2024 primary. Now she could just run again as an independent and Dems can have their left-wing loon candidate. It's too early to say what Republicans would do.

She is "Negotiating"....for committee seats and office location. Schumere will make a proffer, perhaps a better one now(pressure had been on to freeze her out because she didn't vote in lockstep) If it isn't good enough, she will request a counter offer from the Repup side. Manchin will do the same...Both were heavily attacked for not being a simple checkmark vote for every single action Biden/Schumer/Pelosi announced.

Guessing she wants more influence in the Senate, and she thinks she will get that by not be associated with either party. No problem with that. Both parties are terrible.

Note that she does NOT become a Republican. She and Manchin are working on increasing their power. It would seem reasonable now for Manchin to do it, too. They could be the ones controlling a LOT of issues that way.
