DeSantis passed the hurricane test

A 500-year hurricane wiped out most of Florida this week. The Tampa Bay Times described the devastation. The newspaper said, "It wasn’t just the coastline, though it took most of the blow.(snip)The cleanup will take months. Recovery will take years. Even for a state that deals with hurricanes every year, this one could be too much. But 4 years ago, Floridians elected the right Florida Man to run the state government. He didn't wind up in a motel room drunk and stoned with male hookers. DeSantis knew what to do and is doing it. (snip)DeSantis passed the test. Problems crop up and he is on it.

Comments:

My intro is a lame leadin to this splendid article. There is so much here. On the hurricane hits. And on what Governor DeSantis has been doing. Before the hurricane hit and ever since. “He’s been everywhere.” Why do we have to prefer either Trump or DeSantis when our country, darned near beaten to death by Biden and his henchpersons and Obama and the WHO and the WEF and God only knows who else? Keep cool and watch and enjoy both of them. We don’t have to make any choice yet… And read this. Don hits all the bases

There have been hurricanes this bad plenty of times in my lifetime. Camille, Andrew, the one that almost wiped out Galveston - Camille pushed houses back several feet from where they were. It chopped up the roads like building blocks. It won't take years to recover. The southern states that get these storms learned long ago how to bounce back. Florida will do just fine.

Surber us going overboard here with "500 year hurricane" and "destroyed most of Florida". But are untrue. Stronger hurricanes have happened in recent years and while there is a lot of damage, it is highly localized, most of Florida is entirely undamaged. I like all the rest of what he wrote and what DeSantis has done and is doing. But it isn't necessary to exaggerate. The truth is what we need to stick to and deal with.

And Biden had no intention of calling DeSantis until he was shamed into it by DeSantis refusing to take a reporter's question trying to politicize the slight. When asked later, Biden still refused to say what a good job DeSantis has been doing. That would be at cross purposes to what Democrats are already planning..

We left Sarasota for Lakewood Ranch to stay with friends until the storm passed. They never lost power. Our condo, an older building, is in Sarasota. Twelve hours after the storm hit there, the power was back on. Freezer food didn’t even have enough time to defrost. Internet came on yesterday (Sat.) at 11am. All comms just fine. Zero damage to condo building, no water seepage, nada. By contrast people nearby in Englewood and Venice got very hard hit. God was with us. This could have been utter annihilation but the prayer chains and Ron DeSantis, also a person of faith, were on the case. We are eternally grateful for both. LESSON LEARNED: When “mother nature” get pi$$ed off, leave the room and don’t try to argue.

I live no where near the storm damaged area yet I have an awesome Hurricane Ian story to tell… I have a friend who lives in NW Ohio. She and her husband were in Cape Coral visiting friends when the storm hit. They flew so they didn’t have a car. 4 flights they tried to book were cancelled. A 5th was out of Atlanta booked for last evening. They had no way to get there until, out of sheer desperation, she called me and asked if we could come get them. No small ask since I live NE of Atlanta. Without hesitation, my husband agreed to go get them. He got there and got them out just before I-75 was closed due to flooding. Round trip it took about 22 hours. My friends made their flight and they are now back home safe and sound in Ohio. Most Americans are awesome and I have a feeling there will be more stories like this one told in the coming months.

I enjoy Surber’s musings on things but he does himself no favors with such hyperbole as “…hurricane wiped out most of Florida.”. The devastation on the west coast is horrific but the majority of Florida weathered the hurricane quite well.

Here's how I know that DeSantis is going a good job. The Leftist media has gone pretty quiet about it, especially anything related to DeSantis. Rather than give a political enemy credit for a good job, they would rather say nothing. Sure there are pictures and video and brief stories describing the extent of the devastation but not too much about the emergency actions being taken. They also KNOW that if they lie about the situation, DeSantis will rip them apart. He not only is doing the right things, he has the details ready to go if the media starts making up lies as they usually do with a Republican in charge. That is how they nailed Bush for Katrina. Much of the that reporting was huge exaggeration or outright lies, as was proven later. The media didn't care. They wounded Bush and the correction quietly leaked out much later. If there really were problems, they we due to dem mismanagement in LA and New Orleans not Bush. Bush's fault was his weakness in con confronting the lies, which his presidency collapsed. DeSantis will NOT let that happen and the media knows it. Thus the muted reporting.

LONDON — King Charles III has decided not to attend the international climate change summit in Egypt next month, fueling speculation that the new monarch will have to rein in his environmental activism now that he has ascended the throne. The Sunday Times newspaper reported that the decision came after Conservative Prime Minister Liz Truss objected to Charles attending the conference, known as COP27, when she met with the king last month at Buckingham Palace. But a member of Truss' Cabinet said the government and palace were in agreement about the decision.

Remember Blinken’s initial, reflexive, response to the US sabotage of the Nordstream pipelines? It was to gaslight: Nobody benefits from this. Get it? It was all a big mystery, so don’t bother asking, Cui bono? There’s no point. Of course, as economist Michael Hudson pointed out, that bit of gaslighting wasn’t going to have much of a shelf life—If nobody benefited from the sabotage, how do you explain the incontrovertible fact that somebody did do it? This wasn’t some teen prank.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Rescuers evacuated stunned survivors on a large barrier island cut off by Hurricane Ian and Florida’s death toll climbed sharply, as hundreds of thousands of people were still sweltering without power days after the monster storm rampaged from the state’s southwestern coast up to the Carolinas. Florida, with nearly four dozen reported dead, was hit hardest by the Category 4 hurricane, one of the strongest to make landfall in the United States. Flooded roadways and washed-out bridges to barrier islands left many people isolated, amid limited cellphone service and a lack of basic amenities such as water, electricity and the internet.

WASHINGTON — Republicans are abandoning their long crusade to repeal the Affordable Care Act, making the 2022 election the first in more than a decade that won’t be fought over whether to protect or undo President Barack Obama’s signature achievement. The diminished appetite for repeal means the law — which has extended health care coverage to millions of people and survived numerous near-death experiences in Congress and the courts — now appears safer than ever. With slightly more than a month before the next election, Republicans in Congress and on the campaign trail aren’t making an issue of Obamacare.

A federal judge on Friday threw out a lawsuit filed by Stacey Abrams challenging Georgia’s election system after she lost the 2018 gubernatorial race to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp. The lawsuit, which sought to change how the state administers elections, was filed around four years ago by Fair Fight Georgia, a political action committee established by Abrams after her election defeat. Earlier this year, the judge pared down the lawsuit by dismissing many of its original complaints. Abrams alleged “misconduct, fraud or irregularities” in the voting process. She took legal action to stop counties from throwing out some rejected provisional and absentee ballots when updated vote totals affirmed Kemp was the likely

Santa Clara County’s $3 million lawsuit against a church in California’s Silicon Valley over COVID-19 mandate violations, as well as its prior mask mandate, was based on a study that’s deeply flawed, critics say. Pastor Mike McClure of Calvary Chapel San Jose defied county mandates from May through October 2020 when the church held indoor services, made masks optional, ignored social distancing rules, and refused to place limits on how many of its 600 congregants could attend services. The county filed a civil enforcement lawsuit against the church in November 2020 to collect fines and penalties totaling $2.87 million—

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a law Friday that will decriminalize jaywalking across California, ending the familiar practice of police handing out tickets to pedestrians on the argument that the law is enforced more often against minorities than other people. The new law, AB 2147, known as the “Freedom to Walk Act,” could bring an end to a cultural difference that has marked otherwise libertine Californians as being uniquely deferential to laws governing pedestrian traffic. The difference between Californians, who ostensibly tend to obey “don’t walk” signals, and urban dwellers elsewhere in the country, who are notoriously defiant when it comes to crossing against traffic signals, was lampooned

The new price break policy will cover 80 per cent of regular consumption in a bid to try and get Germans to use less gas and make the scenario of shortages less likely.
