A former US defence secretary has said he was "amazed" by the promise of the blood testing technology developed by the now disgraced Theranos founder, Elizabeth Holmes. James Mattis, who sat on the company's board, also thought it was a mistake when she was first accused of fraud. [snip] Gen Mattis, who served under Donald Trump, was one of a number of political grandees to sit on the Theranos board - in his case between 2013 and 2016. On Wednesday, he told the court in San Jose he had been "rather taken" with Ms Holmes' technology at first and later invested nearly $85,000 in the firm.

The White House responded Tuesday to the plea of an Afghan interpreter who helped rescue then-Sen. Joe Biden and two other senators in a 2008 snowstorm, reiterating the president’s pledge to use diplomacy to work to evacuate remaining allies still in Afghanistan who wish to leave.
“We will get you out, we will honor your service, and we're committed to doing exactly that,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said. The Wall Street Journal reported the interpreter – only identified as Mohammed by the newspaper – his wife and four children are in hiding from the Taliban after a “years-long attempt” to leave Afghanistan got mired in bureaucracy.

Through the pandemic lockdown, I shared an evening ritual with a friend: a quick over-the-phone debrief about the episode of "Jeopardy!" we had both just watched, at slightly different times. [snip] My friend and I considered boycotting "Jeopardy!" over this decision, though that would have meant forfeiting our pop-culture comfort food - a meaningless but cherished respite from Everything Else in the World. Happily, we won't have to do that now, thanks to Claire McNear of The Ringer, the reporter and author who diligently did what Sony, the show's parent company, failed to do. McNear vetted Richards with material that was out there in plain sight...

Tennis great Martina Navratilova revealed a serious lack of class Saturday with a tweet celebrating the death of a radio host who was a coronavirus vaccine skeptic but later died of the virus. On Saturday, the winner of 18 Grand Slams jumped to her Twitter account to gleefully say “womp womp” about the death of Nashville radio host Phil Valentine who was an early skeptic of the coronavirus vaccine. [snip] On Saturday, in a re-tweet of the story of Valentine’s death, the 64-year-old tennis star wrote, “WOMP WOMP … no mercy from me for this guy.”

Rep. Nancy Mace had just delivered the kind of red-meat remarks that would ordinarily thrill the Republican voters in attendance here on a recent sweltering evening, casually comparing liberal Democrats to terrorists — the “Hamas squad,” she called them — and railing against their “socialist” spending plans. But asked to give an assessment of her congresswoman, Mara Brockbank, a former leader of the Charleston County Republican Party who previously endorsed Mace, was less than enthusiastic. “I didn’t like that she back-stabbed Trump,” Brockbank said. “We have to realize that she got in because of Trump. Even if you do have something against your leaders, keep them to yourself.”

Reuters has a disturbing report out of Afghanistan this week showing how entrenched the Taliban is in that nation and the brutality they are willing to exhibit to retake control of the country. [snip] Trying to destroy the fighter jets and helicopters we gave to the Afghan Air Force is difficult and dangerous since they tend to be in heavily defended areas. Shooting them down while in flight is also nearly impossible unless you have your own fighter jets or sophisticated surface-to-air missile systems. But if they can manage to kill off all of the pilots, there won’t be an air force anymore.

Black people represented the largest increase in traffic deaths last year than any other racial group, even as Americans drove less overall due to the pandemic, according to recently released data. (Snip) Along with the systemic nature of this problem, Gladney pointed out that social racism also plays a role in the rising number of traffic fatalities. A 2017 study from the University of Nevada found that drivers are less likely to slow down or stop for Black pedestrians than they are for white ones.

Los Angeles police have charged five people in connection with the shooting of Lady Gaga's dog walker and the kidnapping of her beloved French bulldogs, according to police. Three of the five arrested -- James Jackson, 18, Jaylin White, 19, and Lafayette Whaley, 27 -- were allegedly involved in the robbery and shooting of the singer's dog walker, Ryan Fischer, the Los Angeles Police Department said. Authorities don't believe Fischer was targeted because he works for Lady Gaga; investigators believe the suspects were motivated by the high value of French bulldogs, police said.

SAN DIEGO -- A California judge cleared the way Thursday for all restaurants in San Diego County to resume on-site dining, marking a major setback to the governor’s stay-at-home order to slow the spread of the coronavirus before the state's intensive care units run out of beds. The case brought to the court by two San Diego strip clubs handed the biggest victory yet to California businesses fighting public health orders that they say have crippled them economically. [Snip] San Diego Superior Court Judge Joel Wohlfeil told county officials who requested the hearing Thursday to get clarification that his order was “straightforward” and goes beyond the two strip clubs...

President Donald Trump sued Wisconsin officials Tuesday in a last-ditch effort to reclaim a state he lost by about 20,700 votes. [Snip] Under the federal "safe harbor" law, the results determined by the state will be respected if challenges to the outcome are resolved by Dec. 8. The Electoral College meets on Dec. 14 and Congress is to count the electoral votes on Jan. 6. State law says challenges to election results are to be filed in circuit court, but Trump brought his lawsuit directly with the state Supreme Court, where conservatives hold a 4-3 majority. The justices did not immediately say whether they would take the case.

Context: Mattis also served under hussein, W, Slick... There was a great 20/20 piece on this sham. She had Mattis and the other senior military/defense members on her board (ADM Roughead, William Perry, George Schultz, Kissinger, et al) convinced that her gadget could be used during medevacs. When you think about it, does a soldier or Marine hemorrhaging on the battlefield really need a blood test? Blood type is on the dog tags - what more do you need to know to get them into surgery?
