Admiral Yvette Davids first woman nominated
to lead Naval Academy

Original Article

Rear Admiral Yvette Davids has been nominated to become the first female superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy. [snip] She is the first Hispanic woman to command a Navy warship, the frigate USS Curts. She later commanded the USS Bunker Hill, a guided missile cruiser, and Carrier Strike Group 11. But her promotion and appointment likely will be added to the list of more than 100 vacant Pentagon positions that are on hold. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, Alabama Republican, has blocked the nominations to protest new, more expansive accommodations for service members seeking abortions set by the Pentagon last summer.

Comments:

A couple of boxes checked. Hispanic female nominated by the Hispanic SECNAV. During any other administration I wouldn't care but this one has gone over the top with this nonsense. Still, we're not there yet. No doubt saving the ultimate DIE appointment for his next term.

She might be competent, but that is always subject to questions because of Affirmative Action.....people get promotions that they didn't earn all too often. So, we assume that they aren't necessarily competent. And this is very bad for the ones who are actually competent, actually DID earn the job.....because there is always doubt "is she actually any good?" in people's minds. Affirmative action is a hideous thing, especially for competent, hard working, skilled minorities and women. It steals their self respect.

Bravo to #14! This is EXACTLY why affirmative action is such a horribly bad idea. Minorities who achieve success by actual merit, by being the best at what they do regardless of race or gender, will ALWAYS have that shadow over them. Were they REALLY the best, or did they just tick the right boxes? No way to tell which category this woman is in.

These articles usually bring out the resident misogynists. One wonders what great things they did in their lives? It may come as a jolt to some that Hispanic is white. She is married to an Annapolis graduate, a Navy SEAL, also an admiral, and he has a position of authority. His name is Rear Admiral Keith Adams, commander of Naval Special Warfare Command. We really ought to lay off the gratuitous bigotry and misogyny. Makes Conservatives and this site look bad.

Re #15. I saw this in a female relative who was a USN pilot. She IS actually a very good pilot. And she was rated by her USN aviator peers as top in her type of aircraft for two years running. I guarantee you that this would NEVER happen if she wasn't actually very skilled, especially many years ago when this happened, when there were relatively few women USN aviators. But, in the post-USN airline career, when you rarely fly with the same "other pilot" in the cockpit - she could tell that there was always "that question"....."Are you here because you are a good pilot, or because you are a woman?" unspoken subtext. She really tired of it. All that flew with her multiple times recognized that she was a very skilled aviator, but she missed out on being assumed to be competent because of her job. Affirmative action sucks. And she also knew multiple female USN aviators who....her words "are dangerous", and she tells me that one of them probably killed two aircraft full of people during a formation flight...."she was always spooky in formation". Two aircraft disappeared over the ocean on a flight from point A to point B....and that female aviator was known to be flying one of the aircraft. Draw your own conclusions, I know what my relative's conclusion is.

Lego has abandoned plans to make its famous bricks from recycled plastic bottles, saying that the manufacturing process would be more polluting than the current production of oil-based bricks. The plastic was sourced from bottles that are typically used for water or soda. Since then, however, Lego has found that making bricks from the recycled material would require investing in new equipment and involve more steps, which would ultimately lead to more planet-heating pollution than the status quo...
