David McCallum has died. The actor, best known for his role as Ducky on NCIS, died on Monday of natural causes while surrounded by family at New York Presbyterian Hospital. [snip] "After returning from the hospital to their apartment, I asked my mother if she was OK before she went to sleep. Her answer was simply, 'Yes. But I do wish we had had a chance to grow old together.' She is 79, and dad just turned 90."

He was great in Billy Budd.

I read that he married the daughter of a WW2 Marine and did a great deal of fund raising for Toys for Tots and other Marine Corps related charities.

Although I didn't care much for Napoleon Solo (from Georgia, according to the U.N.C.L.E. script), I wanted to be Illya Kuryakin (from Soviet Georgia) when I was in grammar school. The article mentions that although David McCallum was happily married for 56 years, his first wife was Jill Ireland, later married to Charles Bronson. Rest in peace, David. Good work all the way through.

Had a teenage crush on Illya and certainly remember him on Perry Mason, Outer Limits and several good parts in some good movies. But I loved him as Duckie. Not a fan of NCIS once Ziva and Tony left but I love the older episodes. I believe that there was a lot of David McCallum in the role of Duckie. I think creativity and reality inter mingled. RIP in peace, you lived a long time, left a legacy of good works, family and total strangers loved you. That's not bad. God Speed.

[Spoiler Alert]
I hated seeing him get killed in The Great Escape. I still do, every time.
RIP, Illya.

I had a girlhood crush on him, as well, #6. Never missed an episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. In fact, my friends and I created The Girl from U.N.C.L.E., complete with a headquarters in the backyard, made out of cardboard boxes. RIP, David. You make remarkable contributions to the human race, and we thank you for it.

Beautifully put, #6.
I happened to discover an NCIS rerun of S1/Ep1 on tonight, on CBS, of all places, and at the end of the episode I saw, flashed across the screen, "In Memoriam, David McCallum... " It startled me. I thought it was a bad mistake. Alas, it's true. Like so many other Ldotters here, I also, as a young teenager, had a crush on David McCallum. He has remained a favorite all these years.
He obviously lived a good life, surrounded by family who loved him. It was refreshing to read little vignettes by his children. I realized why we never heard anything much about his private life. A good man.
Indeed, the family [FTA] asks that instead of flowers, donations be made to the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund.
He has been a delightful presence on NCIS, an interesting character in a great ensemble cast, especially the episodes prior to departures of Ziva, Tony and "ABEEgale" (as Dr. Mallard called Abby). His "character" will be sorely missed.
RIP, David McCallum

Remarkable comment by his widow after 56 years of marriage. For those who weren't around in the sixties, long before Ducky there was a dashing Russian good-guy named Illya Kuryakin. One of my favorite scenes involved his disguise as a pool repairman to gain access to a residence under suspicion, but he became immediately distracted by the bikini'd blonde lying next to the pool. It was sixties TV so what ensued had to be left to the imagination, but when the scene returned to the residence later in the show her parting words were, "I hope the pool gets broken again real soon."
