The rapacious Democrats in California are at it again, dreaming up a new tax, this time one that would see car owners charged for every mile they drive.
The scheme to grab even more money from the state’s beleaguered citizenry is not just being “debated,” either. There is already a pilot program in motion, called the 2024 Road Charge Collection Pilot, where car owners install a device into their vehicle that tracks their driving and tallies up a tax on them.
The new way of collecting road taxes will reportedly replace the state’s exorbitant gas taxes. At 51 cents per gallon,

The taxpayers on the Left Coast are either oblivious to their surroundings or masochists.
Not sure which.

Wanna bet?
They're going to tax you on gas and mileage.
Everywhere...

This is not about replacing the revenue from gas taxes as more people move to EVs (not enough people have moved to EVs to significantly impact gas tax revenue, and not enough will do so), although they are perfectly happy to increase the amount of taxes they collect. It is about installing a tracking device in everybody's car that they can use to identify those who go to the wrong protests (and who do not go to the right ones).

The per mile tax they tried to get passed here was in addition to the gas tax, did not replace.
Of course the main purpose is to track where you can go. I don't see how it can work until every state does the same.

The only way this works is with more government monitoring, i.e. some device in your car reports the mileage to the government or third party. Or, periodic inspections. And of course it will be as secure as our elections and southern border. What could go wrong.
The gas tax will remain for as long as you Neanderthals continue to desecrate Gia.

Well at least it taxes EVs which are not paying for road usage. It will make them even less appealing.

The system is already operational, More petrol use means more miles driven and more tax for the state.
EVs don't pay taxes at the pump. They'll skin you one way or another, but it won't be just on EVs.

Being in debt up to your eyeballs causes this. It's a symptom of a bigger problem. At some point the government (all levels) will opt for outright confiscation. They will still go bankrupt.

Well, this should speed up the exodus from CA. Also, those moving out are mostly those with the financial means to make the move ie: former taxpaying citizens. They are running a 60 billion dollar plus deficit as it is. There are also untold numbers of people on the edge of moving out now and this will give them the nudge they need to leave.

That tax should only pertain to Electric Vehicles as the fuel they use does not include road taxes as petroleum fuel does.

This will impact rural citizens much more than big city democrats. All part of their plan to force people into the cities for their agenda 2030 (or whichever year their agenda is named now.) and stick it to sane minded people at the same time.

If you think goods and services are expensive now, wait until this nonsense goes into effect. Businesses will have to pass it along to the consumer in the form of higher prices.

The proposed longterm solution is excessively complex, exceeding expensive to create and a book keeping nightmare because it would track every mile drive by every vehicle. The current system for petroleum vehicles is far simpler and taxes by the gallon and record keeping is done at the gas station and distributor level. Because bigger vehicles do more ware-and-tare on roads, but get fewer miles per gallon, total impact is factored in.
To parallel this for EVs, each charging station would charge by the kilowatt hour with the road tax included in the price. Record keeping would be at power company and charging station level. A home charging station would consist of an addional meter and plug. This would be optional, but desirable.

First, they could easily just add the Kilowatt equivalent to the charging stations in the same way gasoline and diesel are charged at the pump.
Second, they could also simply increase the vehicle registration fee to an appropriate amount to cover the lost revenues (government never reduces itself to accommodate for changing dynamics only increases taxes and fees to cover the lost revenues).
Consider the following from a US News and World Report article from Nov. 16, 2022:
The extra weight of an electric vehicle comes from the battery pack, which generally weighs more than 1,000 pounds. Manufacturers such as Tesla try to keep the total weight of the vehicle down by using lightweight aluminum bodies.
Does it even matter how much electric vehicles weigh? Yes, very much so. A number of agencies and officials looking out for road safety, road condition, road maintenance funding and quite interestingly, noise levels and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions all care about vehicle weights.
As more and more EVs hit the road, drivers need to be aware that the heavier vehicles wear on the road more than internal combustion engine vehicles, can be more dangerous in crashes and create more road noise on the highway. Additionally, heavier vehicles require more energy to move than lower-weight vehicles.
So, they are heavier, and will impact the roads more than a regular vehicle but closer to the weight of a Ford 150 or similar type truck.
