Lawyers for Harvard said that accusations of plagiarism against the university's president were 'demonstrably false', before an investigation into her work had even begun, it has emerged - as academics within Harvard said Claudine Gay's actions were 'repellant'.
Tom Clare, a founder of the Virginia-based law firm Clare Locke - which specializes in 'defending clients against high-profile reputational attacks in print, broadcast, and online media' - responded in late October to questions about Gay's work.
Gay, who became president of Harvard on July 1, has faced intense scrutiny since the October 7 terror attack in Israel, and condemnation for her failure to immediately condemn students who justified Hamas' actions.

Back in the dark days of the Soviet Union (USSR), it was not unusual for foreign visitors, especially journalists and diplomats, to go home and tell everybody how clean everything was, how happy and well-fed the people all appeared to be and how all of them expressed undying love and devotion to the Communist Party.
They got those impressions because Soviet officials routinely took such visitors to "Potemkin Villages" — fake towns created specifically for the purpose of concealing from those visiting the USSR from outside of the Communist "paradise" the hellish reality of oppression, starvation and official brutality within it.

A British businessman recently pointed out an obvious truth that climate change activists do not want to hear: There are no readily available replacements for the replacements for the resources that feed the earth. Former Visiting Fellow at Oxford’s Nuffield College Neil Record took the leftist environmentalist group Just Stop Oil up on their signature proposition and examined how the world would fare without fossil fuels in a Dec. 19 column for The Telegraph. The “nightmarish scenario” Record envisions demonstrates just how much humanity depends on coal, oil and gas for a wide variety of basic needs. Record made his disturbing conclusion early on: “But what

Secretary of State Antony Blinken asked Wednesday why the world was pressuring the victim of terror, Israel, instead of pressuring the terrorist “aggressor,” Hamas, whose surrender would end the war in Gaza and save the lives of many Palestinian civilians.
Blinken was answering questions from reporters in a year-end press conference when he delivered this response on the Gaza war:
Everyone would like to see this conflict end as quickly as possible. But if it ends with Hamas remaining in place, and having the capacity and the stated intent to repeat October 7th again and again and again, that’s not in the interests of Israel,

Madison, Wis. — The liberal-controlled Wisconsin Supreme Court overturned Republican-drawn legislative maps on Friday and ordered that new district boundary lines be drawn as Democrats had urged in a redistricting case they hope will weaken GOP majorities.
The ruling comes less than a year before the 2024 election in a battleground state where four of the six past presidential elections have been decided by fewer than 23,000 votes, and Republicans have built large majorities in the Legislature under maps they drew over a decade ago.
The court ruled 4-3 in favor of Democrats

As we stated yesterday, following the Smith request, the Trump attorney response, and the Smith re-response, the transparency of the special counsel motive is obvious. For the Supreme Court to accept the request of Smith, would be for the Supreme Court to pretend the political motive was unknown.
The Supreme Court did not pretend and was curt in their retort: “The petition for a writ of certiorari before judgment is denied.”

President Joe Biden’s parole pipeline at the United States-Mexico border has released a foreign population into American communities larger than Las Vegas, Nevada’s, population in less than a year.
On Friday, Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released illegal immigration figures for November. The data shows that since the start of the year, more than 670,000 foreign nationals have been released into the U.S. interior through the administration’s parole pipeline.
The parole pipeline is made up of so-called “humanitarian parole” that Biden’s DHS offers to Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans as well as the “CBP One” migrant mobile app whereby foreign nationals in Mexico can schedule appointments at the border

The horde of cards was as commonplace as ornaments and lights on the Christmas tree. They would arrive daily (except on Sunday) at a half-dozen a clip. Initially, it started as a trickle but once the calendar sank deeper into December, the numbers grew. Many were from people I did not know. By the time Christmas arrived, the avalanche of cards became part of our family’s Christmas décor — all in service to induce a sensation of good cheer throughout the Maresca abode. My mother would string the cards using yarn through the living room, and they would decorate every doorway.

Most Clarence Thomas hit pieces can't stand up to perfunctory scrutiny. But the newest doesn't even make any sense.
In a new five-person-bylined article, anti-Supreme Court outfit ProPublica takes a decades-old offhand complaint the justice made about his salary and spins it into a nefarious conspiracy. In 2000, Thomas apparently groused about his pay to "vocal conservative" Rep. Cliff Stearns. (The justice was hardly alone. It was a big issue in the 2000s.)
This interaction, we are informed, "set off a flurry of activity across the judiciary and Capitol Hill." By "flurry of activity," ProPublica means a single memo in which the possibility of raising justices' salaries was discussed.

There will be no political commentary from me this week. This week is going to be all about Christmas. Today, I need to dive into a debate that has been raging for 35 years without a satisfactory resolution. Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?
I’m an engineer. It’s impossible for me to give a simple answer if I can dream up a more complicated one. So bear with me.
I think determination of whether a movie fits the Christmas genre depends on more than its musical score and the timing of its release. The plot has to include certain critical elements common to all Christmas movies.

DENVER — Residents who live near a migrant encampment at Zuni and Speer say the number of tents is growing and the trash is becoming a larger issue. On Thursday, 10 buses arrived in Denver with 341 migrants inside. The city said that puts Denver on track to break 100 buses just in December. One of the main spots they’re landing is an encampment at Zuni Street and Speer Boulevard. With more migrants coming in, residents’ concerns are growing — one of those concerns being the trash created by a growing number of people in that one spot. Beau Blackford is one

American culture, under the aegis of the left, has gone insane. That’s why, when a “Black-led and Black-owned” site that “combines art and fashion with lifestyle commentary to create a strong social justice brand” publishes a leftist cliché-ridden essay saying that a Senate staffer’s sodomy in a Senate chamber was an Anne Frank(ish) act of rebellion against an “insurrection,” it’s impossible to know whether it’s real or not. I think it’s real and written either by a Harvard grad or AI.

The illegal migrant inflow is hitting record highs at Eagle Pass, Texas, and it's out of control at entries across the southern border.
Anyone ask what Mexico is doing about it?
We know they're trying to keep them from flooding Tijuana by building a border fence in that area.
But in that, they aren't stopping the migrants. (Snip)
In reality, the Mexicans are helping the migrants cross into the U.S. for the exact same reasons that red border states are busing and flying illegal border crossers into their sanctuary cities of choice. They don't want this problem.

Trump Derangement Syndrome became Orwellian with the recent ruling of the Colorado Supreme Court.
It approved the erasure of Trump from the Republican primary ballot in Colorado, by invoking Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. That ossified clause was intended to bar any ante-bellum federal officials who joined the Confederacy from again holding federal offices after 1865.
In no way is Trump’s conduct on January 6 comparable to calling for secession, much less prompting a Civil War that cost the country 700,000 lives.

Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, is one of the creditors listed on former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani’s bankruptcy court filing.
Guiliani filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in New York on Thursday after a jury in Washington, D.C., determined that Guiliani owed two Georgia election workers nearly $150 million in damages for defamatory remarks about the 2020 presidential election. His list of creditors includes Hunter Biden, the IRS, Dominion Voting Systems, Smartmatic, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, Guiliani Partners LLC and Noelle Dunphy, a former employee who accused Giuliani of sexual assault.

President Joe Biden is pardoning thousands of people who were convicted of simple possession of marijuana on federal lands and in Washington, D.C. – expanding a pot pardon from last year as he commutes the sentences of 11 inmates serving time for drug offenses.
The White House released the clemencies on Friday morning, shortly before revealing the identities of the 11 individuals.
The list includes people convicted of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, distribution of cocaine base, and distribution of crack cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school. Some of them were serving life sentences, including a Georgia man convicted of conspiracy to distribute and possess cocaine as well as cocaine possession.

Jill Biden’s creepy video, featuring a troupe of tap dancers showing off the garish Christmas decorations in the White House, prompted one journalist to comment that they are “really going for the Hunger Games as this year’s Christmas theme.”
While they’re prancing around in the capital, out in the districts everyone else is struggling to pay the sky-high cost of this festive season.
Are you traveling to be with friends and family? Airfares are 18% higher than they were Christmas 2020. And if you try to cut costs by driving, gasoline prices are 45% higher.
Buying food for your guests will cost 20% more

PIEDRAS NEGRAS, MEXICO — Migrants are hurrying across the US’ southern border into Texas in record numbers before a state law allowing police to arrest anyone suspected of illegally crossing the border goes into effect in the new year.
Tens of thousands of people are waiting at the Mexico-US border each day — overwhelming border patrol agents and local authorities — and the numbers are only expected to increase as migrants race to beat the March deadline when officers can begin enforcing the Texas law.

Four states—Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Massachusetts—have decided to force voters with a single option for the Democratic primaries: Joe Biden.
The decision, which effectively crowns Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee in those states without primary contestation, has incited allegations of disenfranchisement and questions about the democratic process within the party.
The true threat to the demise of our democracy lies with the Democrats, not Donald Trump. The communist party will now decide the Democratic Party’s nominee and who they install into the White House.

The unprecedented, record-shattering flood of illegal migrants crossing President Joe Biden’s border is “not unusual,” Biden’s press secretary said Thursday.
“What we’re seeing here at the border, the migration flow — increased migration flow, certainly … it ebbs and flows,” Karine Jean-Pierre told the White House daily press conference. “We’re at a time of the year where we’re seeing more at the border and it’s not unusual,” said Jean-Pierre, who is an immigrant from Haiti. (X Video) “U.S. apprehensions of migrants at the border hit a new record Monday [December 18], with at least 12,600 encounters during a period of just 24 hours,”

The “Bible” of the English Language, the Oxford English Dictionary of 1932, defined the word “ghoul” as “An evil spirit supposed in Mohammedan countries to rob graves and prey on human corpses.”
That sounds right. The world was even treated to a display of this on October 7 when an army of Jihadist Arabs violently raped not only living Jewish females but also their dead bodies. One can also assume that they sodomized the remains of dead Jewish men and boys too.
From reports by survivors of captivity in Gaza, there is reason to believe, given what is known of Arab sexuality, that the remaining men and boy hostages

The plagiarism controversy surrounding Harvard’s president is the most recent episode in which elite academia appears to be playing directly into the hands of ex-President Donald Trump’s populist Republicans.
First, the presidents of three top universities equivocated in a congressional hearing about the seemingly obvious question of whether calling for genocide against Jews infringed their universities’ codes of conduct Now, Harvard leader Claudine Gay is embroiled in a controversy over plagiarism that is posing the question of whether the academic standards that are applied to students also cover those at the top of the ivory tower.

Why is Donald Trump so resilient?
As 2023 draws to a close, the ex-president is on track to win the Republican nomination and beat Joe Biden next November.
If the election were today, Trump would get his second term.
Yet he's charged with crimes that run a gamut from election interference to mishandling classified information.
He's under gag orders and lost a $5 million civil suit this year.
Why don't voters care -- or if they do, why are they rewarding Trump not punishing him?
A hint can be found in the work of a great historian who died last week, J.G.A. Pocock.

Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Weissmann said Thursday on MSNBC’s “Deadline” that Americans died in the Civil War, so leaders “who engaged in insurrection” like the Colorado Supreme Court found former President Donald Trump did, can not run for office.
Weissmann said, “This is not new. It is true that this provision of the Constitution is new to lots of people because we’ve never been in a situation where you would have somebody running for office who engaged in insurrection or a rebellion. What’s remarkable to me is that the story isn’t really, the unanimous finding in the Colorado case because you had no one dissenting on the issue
