Some electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are scrapping the AM radio from their cars, claiming safety concerns. Although conservative talk radio dominates AM radio ratings, it is also considered a critical safety tool, as it is one of the primary ways that federal, state, and local officials communicate with the public during natural disasters and other emergencies.
Automakers such as Ford and Tesla have ditched the AM radio from their newer EV models, arguing that the motors on EVs interfere with AM frequencies, creating buzzing and signal fading, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

Have they thought about how this “electromagnetic noise” affects occupants of the vehicle?

#2 is correct. All cars have to comply with electromagnetic design and test standards. These standards include requirements for interference and compatibility. Compliance testing is done in a test chamber. You don't want your car doing strange things when you drive under a power line or get near a radio station, especially if you have one of the self-drive cars.

Maybe this is one of the "conditions" that the auto manufacturers agreed to in order to get money from the feds?

Let’s see. Many conservative radio programs broadcast on AM radio. So, the government doesn’t want you to hear conservative radio, so it gets their pets at Woke Auto to remove AM radio, for your ‘safety’…

Excuse me? The same manufacturers who found a way to supress the static and buzzes emitted by up to 40,000 el3ectromagnetic events per minute, i.e., spark coils and plugs, cannot figure out how to supress the hum from an smoothly turning electric motor? Methinks something else is being suppressed.
Here is a business opportunity: Swap out OEM radios for ones which include AM. I will be going to Silicone Valley Bank for financing. . .

When you drive an EV you are riding a 1000 pound device prone to catastrophic fires that are far more difficult to put out. It is amazing that so many people are foolhardy enough to put themselves in one.

Safety my arse. One of the current electric cars issues is the distance it can travel before needing to be recharged. Until there are as many charging stations as there are gas stations around the country, driving an electric car any distance from home will always be an issue. All of these electric car commercials show a car with more lights on it and screens that look like big screen TVs than on your normal gas-powered vehicle. It's no wonder an electric car can't go much farther than 300 miles before it needs recharging. That distance will continue to drop as the car batteries get older. Removing an AM radio is one less drain on the batteries of the vehicle, and since no one really listens to AM radio, it's no great loss.

I managed a couple of Radio Shack Stores back when they were around. Two things occur to me reading this. One they make filters to help eliminate interference from electrical components in the cars, at least they used to. Two the manufacturer of the car ought to be buying components that don't interfere with a radio. If they are interfering with the car radio so bad that it becomes a safety issue then the EV's are definitely interfering with other electronic devices, say Cell phones, TV's and possible computers or stereo equipment in cars around the EV. This is a major flaw in the EV cars design. It might even have a negative effect physical for people in the EV or in the immediate vicinity. Needs to be looked into in this mad rush to Electrify our transportation system.

I have a background in radio and RF. When EVs became 'a thing' way back, I wondered how they would avoid the noise from all the spikes and whines from the various systems. They seem to have done a pretty good job in modern ICE cars but it would be very difficult in an all electric.
AM is slowly switching to Digital AM. Like satellite radio, it is free from much interference but you would need a modern AM radio to hear it.
I suspect manufacturers don't want to install them. it's a cost vs payback issue.

Doesn't matter to me...I'll never buy an electric car...and I listen to Rush every time I'm in my car ...thanks to the Rush Limbaugh tape that his wife sold to US....on Rush Limbaugh.com....here's where the woke lose...they forget WE are very instinctive Americans...and WE take measures to protect ourselves....have you noticed the desperate advertising of Direct TV recently...looks like they're in trouble because Americans don't like being censored.....

This is true, however this day and age you can stream almost all of the big news-Talk AMs, just have them programmed into your phone or radio...

So put filters on your stupid EVs. All orher equipment is required to prove that it does not interfere with radio or TV transmissions.
Make these rotten golf cars comply.

If electric car manufacturers were worried about safety concerns they would remove the Lithium battery that catches fire and burns the car to smithereens.

For a news “fix” I’m still able to receive an all-news station from a 50,000 watt AM blowtorch in Chicago, even here in western Michigan. It seems like news has become a rare commodity. I hope they hang in there even though they’ve dropped their AM identification and only push their weenie FM affiliate call letters on their station ID.

Use your smartphone and hook up to an AM station that has your favorite conservative broadcasters program on.
Bluetooth your phone to your radio/speaker.
Voila. Problem solved.
