Lucianne Goldberg died last week at the grand age of eighty-seven, and still the eponymous proprietrix of Lucianne.com, an early conservative news aggregator and one I continue to enjoy. A quarter-century ago, she became one of the most famous figures in America, as the confidante who persuaded Linda Tripp to tape her conversations with Monica Lewinsky and thus set in motion the impeachment of Bill Clinton.
I can't claim to have been a close friend, but John Podhoretz's affectionate portrait accords with my own trio of brief interactions. She was tough, and she survived the Clintonites' efforts to destroy her, as she had survived the efforts of others

Very much enjoyed the ease of conversation in the '99 interview. Such a pleasure to read. Thanks to OP for sharing this gem!

Consider this pull quote from the article from Mark Steyn:
The problem wasn't the Starr report. It was a huge best-seller in Britain, and the British press loved it. If you had that kind of press in this country, I think Clinton would have been gone in a week. "
The title of the 1974 Doobie Brothers album comes to mind titled "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits"

My fondest memory of Lucianne - - was when she personally invited me to return to this forum.
I had been "banned" in 2012 - - by a lunatic female "administrator" - - for deploring the invasion of this forum by paid Romney hacks - - who nearly destroyed the integrity and fairness of this salon. I referred to the hacks as "Romneybots" - - and this hysterical Romney supported banned me - - just like they do nowadays at Twitter and Facebook.
Lucianne became aware of this - - and she personally invited me back - - which of course I was happy to do.
God bless you, Lucianne - - you are amazing and one-of-a-kind!

FTA: Steyn..."In this country you have a strange monarchical reverence for the institution that the British don't have."
Indeed, so. And this is the fatal flaw that "real conservatives" need to wrestle with. Respect government? The Founders DID NOT. That sort of respect has led to the Patriot Act, which is the basis for much/most/all of the "weaponization" we suffer under today...after multiple re-authorizations no less. And all was done with "real conservative" support...because conservatives are actually more pro-government than Big Government liberals.
Miss Lucianne saw government for what it is...a collection of buffoons, men and women with feet of clay worthy of general disdain. Some better than others, and none much worthy of anything but disdain. Men like Clinton and women like Lewinsky are cheaper than dime a dozen in the political realm. While Biden is suffering dementia, it really hasn't affected his schtick, from sniffing chicks (the younger the better) to lying about his past and anything else that comes to his feeble mind. Every politician is a stone liar and as authentic as three-dollar bills.
FTA: TAE It's being argued in the press today that the Republican party has become too Southern, too religious, too conservative, and that's why it isn't doing well.
STEYN: Well compared to what? They were pathetic in the election, but they weren't wiped out. I don't think you can say they're too Southern or too conservative. They're just nothing. They're this big wobbling heap of Jell-O in the middle of the table.
GOLDBERG:And they can't even turn out their core constituency. I mean, they weren't busing hymn-singing Southerners to the polls. Where are these people when we need them?
God bless Miss Lucianne.

Lucianne and I had many emails back and forth over the years- She was and is a great lady, a Patriot- and a support during the tumultuous years the last few decades have wrought. I appreciated her, her candor, and Straight talk. You knew where you stood- God Bless and God Speed my friend-

That was fun! We see so little of Mark these days. And how great to hear from Lucianne! Also a reminder of how little the Clinton's have contributed to our social fabric and how very much they have detracted from it.

Lucianne.com has been my go-to website every day for 25+ years. News and pithiness are the adrenaline for me. Making funny comments and jokes is the fuel for the fire. I had several handles over the years, SocietyDweller, JediJerry, GoodDeal, and a few more that I have forgotten. I got booted off a few times, but an email directly to Lucianne with an explanation of my comment and an apology and reassurance it would not happen again, got me reinstated. She was very understanding and forgiving. Sometimes I posted comments and replies and things as a joke thinking it was funny, but others didn't think so. That got me in trouble. Took a while to learn it is a salon and not a saloon. Rest in peace dear Lucianne.

Lucianne was a magnanimous example of what the "Conservative" American should be - she was true to the Conservative movement until the end

IDP, that is a small group of proud members, and you are noted for your leadership among those voices who pushed back.
You were right then, and now.

Those people nearly destroyed this site and coopted the clinton era camaraderie our gracious hostess developed for their own ends. I would love to know how many were forced off and came back under different names or by her gracious invitation.
Much better site with you here.
but some of us know exactly who you mean.

A breath of fresh air! Thanks, OP. I hope the staff uses that picture of Lucianne for L.com. It just seems appropriate somehow.
Andrew Ferguson humorously captured Republican propensity toward “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory” in this comment. But I’ve gained enough cynicism to think today’s leadership has a purpose & knows exactly what they’re doing to try and bring it about. Some apparently did all along, when they were still being given the benefit of the doubt.
FTA: TAE Does the election of Jesse "The Body" Ventura mean anything for our two-party system?
FERGUSON: I worry that the Republicans in their infinite wisdom are going to draw precisely the wrong conclusions from this. Reasoning that JesseVentura used to wear a feather boa in his previous career they'll nominate Carol Channing for President in 2000, or something. The fact is, Ventura ran on a not-ludicrous platform. He talked about taxes, and Minnesota is a very heavily taxed state. I would have voted for him over Hubert Humphrey III. I would have voted for him over Hubert Humphrey the first.

Lucianne told it like it was and didn’t care what anyone thought. I bet she was fun her whole life . I loved what she said about Geraldo. She had him pegged. I too have personal notes from her, and I treasure the Lucianne coffee cups I bought. Rest In Peace, dear Lucianne.

This is wonderful. It begins with Mark Steyn's tribute to Lucianne and goes on to republish a 1999 interview with Mark, Lucianne, and Andrew Sullivan in The American Enterprise.
