The web of alliances that essentially brought on WW1 is today called NATO, and it has one purpose: Contain Russia in Europe. It has expanded to Russia's borders and continues to expand, even making Ukraine's dispute with Russia its own cause - so far only aided by materiel transfers. The Russians have proven themselves a second-rate land power, at best. Its command structure, tactics and equipment can hardly stand up to the West's obsolete stuff sent to Ukraine. Unless, or until the US (de facto NATO) inserts itself diplomatically to shut this war down, it can only slide further toward the day when Putin feels compelled to act with his nuclear arsenal. As Newt points out, this is like July 1914. One wonders what NATO's end game is...or planned to be. And what is Russia's facing defeat?
