The Miami-Dade School Board in Florida rejected a proposed LGBTQ month for students after a contentious three-hour meeting Wednesday night. The measure would have recognized October as an official period of LGBTQ recognition in the district’s schools and taught older students about two Supreme Court cases related to gay rights.
Backers of the proposal argued that the initiative would ease stigmas plaguing the community—with some public speakers likening opposition to Nazi marginalization of specific groups.
Opponents asserted that the plan was tantamount to “indoctrination” and would introduce sexualized subject matter to Miami-Dade schools without adequate parental awareness.(Snip)“LGBTQ people suffered a higher rate of suicidal ideation

If you like free speech, don’t go to Columbia. A leading free speech organization ranked the best and worst college campuses for freedom of speech and New York’s top school, Columbia University, came in dead last. On Wednesday, The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) released its third annual College Free Speech Rankings for the 2022-2023 school year. In partnership with College Pulse, they surveyed nearly 45,000 students from more than 200 colleges—making it the largest ever survey about campus expression.
The University of Chicago came first for campus free speech, scoring 77.92 points out of 100. Four public universities rounded out the top five: Kansas State

Homeland Security on Thursday announced it has adopted a new lenient policy on immigrants’ use of welfare, tossing a Trump-era policy that would have been far stricter. Under the new system, known as the “public charge” rule, immigrants will only be penalized for potential welfare use if the government believes they will eventually become “primarily dependent” on government payments.
By contrast, living in government housing, using Medicaid for health coverage or accepting food stamps wouldn’t count against an immigrant. Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said the new rule will deliver “fair and humane treatment of legal immigrants.”
“Consistent with America’s bedrock values, we will not penalize individuals for choosing to access

The Homeland Security Department failed to fully vet some of the Afghan evacuees it brought into the U.S. during last year’s airlift, the department’s inspector general said in a devastating audit, which warned that some people who “posed a risk to national security” were indeed let into the country.
One evacuee, just liberated from prison by the Taliban, was cleared to reach the U.S. Another reached the U.S. and was released, only to have the FBI conclude three months later that the evacuee “posed national security concerns.”(Snip)The prisoner was even flagged upon arrival at a U.S. airport. On Tuesday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Hannity,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) stated that “the docile corporate media” is complicit in the White House lying about the border. Cruz said, “We saw Karine Jean-Pierre stand up and say, people are not crossing the border, they’re not walking across the border. Listen, we’re used to flacks spinning. This was a flat-out lie. It’s an objective lie. It is 100% false. I invited her, come down to the border and see it, and her response was, I don’t need to be lectured by Republican Senators. I’ll tell you what, I’m going to give a challenge,

Michelle Obama took a veiled swipe at former President Donald Trump by talking about the 'peaceful transition of power' and democracy being stronger than our 'divisions' as she returned to the White House for the first time since her husband Barack's term ended to unveil their official portraits. The former first lady was on the verge of tears as she said 'a girl like me—she was never supposed to be up there next to Jacqueline Kennedy and Dolly Madison' in the ceremony Wednesday with President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden. While the former president joked about how artist Sharon Sprung made his wife look 'fine,'

The names of hundreds of U.S. law enforcement officers, elected officials and military members appear on the leaked membership rolls of a far-right extremist group that’s accused of playing a key role in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, according to a report released Wednesday. The Anti-Defamation League Center on Extremism pored over more than 38,000 names on leaked Oath Keepers membership lists and identified more than 370 people it believes currently work in law enforcement agencies—including as police chiefs and sheriffs—and more than 100 people who are currently members of the military. It also identified more than 80 people who were running for

California officials say it will cost $14 billion to upgrade aging wastewater facilities that are dumping nutrients from treated human sewage into San Francisco Bay, which are feeding a giant algae bloom that has lingered for more than two months and killed tens of thousands of fish. The algae bloom, which appeared in late July, has grown to an immense size because of the tons of nutrients from urine and feces of the eight million Bay Area residents that is released into the waters daily—one plant alone dumps 85 million gallons a day that contains 5.5 tons of nitrogen. Scientists say the bloom was triggered by climate change,

Boston—Attorney General Maura Healey won the Democratic primary for Massachusetts governor on Tuesday, bringing her one step closer to becoming the first openly gay candidate and first woman elected to the state’s top political office—eight years after she was elected the nation’s first openly gay attorney general. Healey, whose only rival for the nomination dropped out of the race but remained on the ballot, will be the heavy favorite in November against the winner of the Republican primary. Former state Rep. Geoff Diehl, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, and businessman Chris Doughty, who is considered more moderate, are running for the GOP nomination.

Leading pediatricians in the United States are saying that some young children may need two flu shots this year after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted vaccination schedules last year and amid reports of a more viscous flu season in the southern hemisphere. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) put out a notice Tuesday that children between the ages of six months and eight years old who have received less than two flu shots during their life should double up on the jabs this time around. The two shots should be received around a month apart from one-another. It comes in response to faltering flu shot demand

Is that on sale? White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre received social media scorn Tuesday after she accidentally called Russia’s Nord Stream 1 pipeline “Nordstrom”—as in the department store. The slip of the tongue came as President Biden’s chief spokeswoman accused Russia of fueling an energy crisis in Europe by shutting down the pipeline, which supplies natural gas to large swathes of the continent. “What we see Russia is doing, we’ve been very clear about this, they’re using energy, they’re weaponizing energy,” Jean-Pierre told reporters during her regular press briefing. “One of the things that has been out there… they shut down the pipeline of Nordstrom 1.”

Most Americans will need to get an annual vaccine for the Chinese coronavirus, Anthony Fauci, outgoing chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, said this week. Fauci suggested that it is becoming “clear” that coronavirus jabs, in the future, should be treated and viewed simply as an annual flu shot. “It is becoming increasingly clear that looking forward with the COVID-19 pandemic, in the absence of a dramatically different variant, we likely are moving towards a path with a vaccination cadence similar to that of the annual influenza vaccine, with annual updated COVID-19 shots matched to the currently circulating strains for most of the population,” he stated,

Give China Mitch a break. He's in his money room counting his ill-gotten gains, and to the extent that his dim staff cares to defend us, it will take them a bit more time to craft the type of zinger Tweet that satisfies the electorate.
