There has been a question hanging out there concerning the Capitol riot now for some time. Just exactly how many FBI/other federal agents/confidential informants were there and embedded with the crowd on Jan. 6 during the riot? Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and others have tried to get to the bottom of that question. Cruz questioned Jill Sanborn, executive assistant director of the FBI’s National Security Branch when she testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee in January, but she wouldn’t give him a straight answer. “How many FBI agents or confidential informants actively participated in the events of January 6th?” Cruz asked. Sanborn said that she couldn’t go into “sources and methods.”

“Democracy Dies in Darkness” is the motto of the Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post. It may sound like a warning, but more and more it seems like a summary of the left’s aspirations to control debate and shut down any opposition. A recent example of those aspirations appeared in a column by former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich on Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s big buy of Twitter stock. The original headline — changed after widespread mockery — was this: “Elon Musk’s vision for the Internet is dangerous nonsense: Musk has long advocated a libertarian vision of an ‘uncontrolled’ internet. That’s also the dream of every dictator, strongman and demagogue.”

Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy on Thursday. The new legislation will go into effect on July 1. The Florida House voted 78-39 almost entirely along party lines to pass the law in February, while the Senate passed the bill in March. The bill allows exemptions for women who face life-threatening or serious injuries from pregnancy, or if the fetus has a fatal defect. “House Bill 5 protects babies in the womb who have beating hearts, who can move, who can taste, who can see, and who can feel pain,” DeSantis said in a press release. “Life is a sacred gift worthy of our protection

As Vladimir Putin embarks on his Plan B — a massive military operation to try to grab at least a small bite of eastern Ukraine to justify his misbegotten war — I thought: Who could give him the best advice right now? I settled on one of America’s premier teachers of grand strategy, John Arquilla, who recently retired as a distinguished professor of defense analysis at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. When I called Arquilla and asked him what he’d tell Putin today, he didn’t hesitate: “I would say, ‘Make peace, you fool.’” This is also known as the first rule of holes: When you’re in one, stop digging.

Democrats are facing a nightmare scenario with about six months to go before the midterm elections. Inflation, immigration, the war in Ukraine and the still-lingering COVID-19 pandemic make for a dreadful political atmosphere for President Biden’s party. The problems are compounded by Biden’s weak approval numbers and the historical pattern whereby a president’s party typically loses seats in the first midterms of his tenure. Some Democrats believe a turnaround is still possible, or at least that losses can be kept modest. But others, granted anonymity to speak candidly, sound a louder alarm.

The plan outlines more than 300 different strategies and commitments by more than 90 federal agencies, including the Justice, Defense, Energy and Labor departments. For example, the Justice Department will offer more language-accessible programs

Take a gander at his latest poll numbers: President Joe Biden’s approval rating sank to a new low of 33%, according to a new Quinnipiac poll. The April poll found 33% of voters approved of Biden’s handling as president, while 54% disapproved. Broken down by party lines, Republicans disapprove 93-3%. Democrats approve 76-12%. More than half of Independent voters disapprove of the 46th president’s handling, with only 26% offering approval.

We first heard of this story in late January. A New Mexico woman named Alexis Avila had just given birth to a baby boy. Allegedly, she then placed the baby into a garbage bag and “tossed” the bag into a dumpster, an incident that was caught on video and widely viewed across the country. It was heartbreaking to watch. Once discovered by passersby, the infant was taken via helicopter to a nearby hospital where he was treated for severe hypothermia. During a subsequent hearing, prosecutors stated: “In my 27 years of doing this, I have never seen anyone, child or adult, have a temperature that was not read with a digital thermometer.”

One of the genius elements of the U.S. Constitution was its allowance for competing models of success and failure. Nothing paints Joe Biden and fellow Democrats so out of touch as their lame rhetoric about inflation being “Putin’s price hike.” The editorial board of the Wall Street Journal brings the receipts on the true origins of the inflationary wave, and not just the origins but the impacts felt in every American household. While the recent global effects have had an impact, rapid inflation began a year ago — and so did the erosion of American income: White House aides were out in force on Monday warning that Tuesday’s inflation report would be ugly and blaming it on Vladimir Putin. No doubt that beats blaming your own policies.
