Hundreds of highly distinguished science and math professors have signed an open letter expressing "urgent concern" over California’s efforts to reform mathematics education in the name of social justice. The letter, signed by 597 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professionals, said the California Department of Education’s (CDE) proposed new mathematics framework will aim to reduce achievement gaps by limiting the availability of advanced mathematical courses to middle schoolers and beginning high schoolers, making it more challenging for students to succeed in STEM at college. (Tweet) The signatories also condemned the CDE’s "deeply worrisome trend" of favoring "trendy but shallow"

Is there a way for the rest of the states to vote to expel California from the union. California is a corrupt third world banana republic that has no business being part of the United States.

This behaviour is NOT new. It is just now being formalized as policy but in truth has been operational in public education for decades. Social promotion and other such pandering to minorities has crippled inner city children and has created a near-permanent underbelly of impoverished blacks whose only route to 'success' was crime. W Bush got a few things right and one of these
was the concept of 'the soft bigotry of low expectations'.

The irony here is people with money will send their kids to private schools that won't be governed by this nonsense. People will still be 'unequal'. Perhaps California will ban home schooling and private schools in the name of equality.

At the end of the day, a school is no better than the student that go there. Ultimately, student and school success has little to do with the schools themselves, and everything to do with the families from which the students originate.

California is officially telling its minority students that they are too stupid to succeed in math and science. Nice message!

To make this acceptable, there need to be multiple tracks a student can choose from in high school to prepare for their future. For example, College Prep where students take the historic math courses to build knowledge fitting to prepare for a college education. For the people that need the bar lowered, give them a track to graduation, but call it what it is so their diploma reflects that they took the path of least or lower resistance to graduate. We cannot continue to reduce our public education system to least common denominator because it continues to decrease with each passing year.

Thereby creating yet another generation of smash-and-grabbers. Then again, maybe we'll be shooting them in the streets by then.

Some people don't grasp mathematics. Since I find it very easy, it has taken some time for me to understand this truism. They should choose other fields of endeavor in their lives that don't require math. I have seen a few folks that are truly shockingly unable to grasp extremely simple math. I can't explain it but it is real.
I once paid for a $1.15 bill in McD's with five quarters. The blonde 17 year old female behind the register looked at the money and literally just FROZE, staring at the quarters. After about 10 seconds of this, I very quietly said, hoping to avoid embarrassment for her, "Just give me a dime." No response whatsoever, still frozen staring, eyes didn't even flick to me as I spoke. After about 20 more LONG seconds, I repeated, "Just give me a dime." Frozen, now tears rolling down her pretty face, staring at the money. After about a minute, or minute and a half, of very uncomfortable silence, an older male employee came over and put his arms around her and walked her stiffly into the back of the restaurant. A few seconds later a new cashier appeared and asked what I needed. "I just need a dime in change and my apple pie." The dime and pier were presented and I walked away ......really saddened and baffled.
If California wants to create a lot more of this..... just keep it up.

Here is an example of one of the math problems: 2 transsexual females + 2 self declared homosexual males = how many humans?

In the pre-civil -war South it was illegal to teach slaves to read and write because the slaveholders knew it would be harder to control people who could be informed. That was the Democrat Party then. This is the Democrat Party now. Educated people are in danger of thinking for themselves. Democrats don't want a population that can think. They want a population that blindly obeys.

#8, that system was in effect when I went to junior and senior high school. Sections 1 through 8 were set up with the curriculum getting easier as you moved toward Section 8. Sections 1 through 3 offered higher math and college-level courses. It was eventually dropped because the students in the higher-numbered sections began to feel stupid. (Duh).

#10, I had a friend with a daughter who had that exact problem. After barely making it through high school she was accepted into a Veterinarian Technician program at the technical school level. She was failing what little math they use. He hired a tutor for her but she just could not get the math. She dropped out and accepted a job with a Vet at a slightly lower level and is one of the best people with animals I have ever seen. Just don't ask her to count them.

I have long noted that the media over-uses, or incorrectly applies, the word 'Reform'.
Change is 'Reform' ONLY when it improves a system.
Change is NOT 'Reform' when it makes a system WORSE.
If it is possible to abuse the word even more than the media, the Democ'RAT Congress does precisely that in naming many of their left-wing schemes "The such-and-such REFORM Act." Typically the proposed law changes does not REFORM anything, but instead makes it worse. But they shove the word into the bill title regardless. I guess they think it will get more ill-informed Congresscritters to vote for it.
