Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told reporters Wednesday that President Joe Biden will not “be removed from office” in wake of the deadly Afghan evacuation that left 13 U.S. military personnel killed, an estimated 200 American citizens stranded, and billions of dollars worth of equipment in the hands of the Taliban. “Well, look the president is not going to be removed from office … I think the way these behaviors get adjusted in this country is at the ballot box,” the Wall Street Journal reported McConnell’s remarks. “There isn’t going to be an impeachment,” the Kentucky Senator who lost his majority in the 2020 election cycle added.
How does a leader decide what to do?
The most logical response is: “Cui bono?”—”Who benefits?”—from the decision.
If some policy benefits your country most, you should, within moral bounds, pursue it.
If your enemies benefit most, you should avoid it.
I’d be curious to learn what answer proponents of America leaving Afghanistan—conservative or liberal—would give to the question, “Cui bono?”
I can say that until this moment, I have not read or heard a single cogent argument from proponents of American withdrawal as to how exactly it benefits America.

FiveThiryEight had 47.2 disapproving and 46.7 approving. Real Clear Politics really skewered him with 49.2 disapproving to 45.8 approving, first time the approval was under 46. That last graph is pretty striking. If you factor in that the polls tend to weight to Democrats, you know the numbers are likely even worse.

Moreover, it appears that only a small percentage of the non-American evacuees hold the special immigrant visa given to Afghans employed by, or on behalf of, the U.S. government.
