A Bronx vandal poured a liquid believed to be gasoline on an occupied NYPD van—which drove off before anything worse happened, police said Saturday.
The disturbing incident happened Friday at 10:30 p.m. at Valentine Avenue and East 180th Street in Fordham, not far from the 46th Precinct station house on Ryer Avenue, where a rowdy group was already throwing eggs and trash at the vehicle, cops said. The vandal was spotted in surveillance footage holding a red gas can and pouring the mystery liquid all over the exterior and the hood of the marked NYPD van—whose driver quickly drove away, police said. It wasn’t immediately known

An Afghan refugee faced online harassment after tweeting out a photo showing his meager food rations at Fort Bliss in El Paso. Hamed Ahmadi, 28, a Fulbright semi-finalist, tweeted the photo showing some anemic chicken slices and fruit to highlight the unglamorous life he now faced as a refugee. “The point of that tweet was not… to be complaining, to be very critical,” Mr. Ahmadi told The Independent. “I was just describing a situation of Afghan refugees that are in the situation that they never really wanted to be in.”(Snip)The refugee enjoyed a good life in the Afghan capital Kabul, though his family has suffered tragedy.

The Taliban is using advanced weaponry left behind by American troops to crush the last pockets of resistance to its takeover of Afghanistan. Fighters led by the country's former vice-president were last night mounting a final defence against the new regime's forces in Panjshir Valley, the only province that the Islamist group has not captured. But the rebels appeared outgunned by Taliban fighters using US armoured vehicles, mortar missiles and high-powered artillery. Videos showed Taliban gunmen brandishing US military M4 and M16 rifles and wearing night-vision goggles. The military hardware is understood to have been seized from US-trained Afghan government security forces, who fled

The ISIS-supporting terrorist who went on a stabbing rampage in New Zealand Friday has been named as Ahamed Aathil Mohamed Samsudeen. The 32-year-old Sri Lankan refugee was shot dead after stabbing five people and injuring two others during an attack at the Countdown supermarket in New Lynn in west Auckland. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said he was considered one of the nation's most dangerous extremists and had been watched 24/7 since 2016, adding she was 'gutted' he was able to carry out the attack despite being on the terror watchlist. Holland, Mich.—A Michigan restaurant owner who flouted COVID-19 restrictions and spent four nights in jail in March said she plans to reopen in a few weeks. The food license yanked from Marlena’s Bistro and Pizzeria in Holland has been restored, Marlena Pavlos-Hackney said. “I’m grateful, but my fight isn’t finished yet,” Pavlos-Hackney said, referring to an appeal of earlier court decisions that landed her behind bars. Pavlos-Hackney became the face of defiance over enforcement of virus-related restrictions. She continued to welcome indoor diners, despite state and local orders, and ignored other rules aimed at controlling the spread of COVID-19.

U.S. officials are looking into reports that in the frantic evacuation of desperate Afghans from Kabul, older men were admitted together with young girls they claimed as 'brides' or otherwise sexually abused. U.S. officials at intake centers in the United Arab Emirates and in Wisconsin have identified numerous incidents in which Afghan girls have been presented to authorities as the 'wives' of much older men.(Snip)'Intake staff at Fort McCoy reported multiple cases of minor females who presented as `married´ to adult Afghan men, as well as polygamous families,' the document says. The Florida diner where the owner posted a sign turning away Joe Biden voters after 13 US troops were killed in Afghanistan has had to shut its doors—because so many people called to buy meals for veterans that the small business ran out of food. 'I've gotten so many people calling me from all over the world, from Europe, trying to purchase meals for veterans, which I still haven't been able to organize,' said Angie Ugarte, who posted the sign in the window of the DeBary Diner in the central Florida city of DeBary.

More than 25,000 Afghans who fled Afghanistan after the fall of Kabul to the Taliban are at military bases in the United States and senior U.S. officials expect to double that number before the mission is complete. On Friday, Air Force Gen. Glenn VanHerck, head of U.S. Northern Command, said the Defense Department expects to house some 50,000 people at eight military installations around the country. “We’re ready to expand if needed [but] at this time I don’t anticipate needing any additional bases,” Gen. VanHerck told reporters at the Pentagon.(Snip)Gen. VanHerck called the evacuation and housing mission “a massive military, diplomatic and humanitarian undertaking.” The Afghan evacuees arrived

A New Orleans 911 operator deliberately disconnected emergency calls without obtaining necessary information or relaying the callers' emergencies to other dispatchers, and she is now facing arrest, according to authorities.
Precious Stephens, 25, is wanted on a count of malfeasance in office, and she remained at large Thursday, police said. She has been fired from her job as a 911 operator, officials said. Stephens worked for the Orleans Parish Communication District, which dispatches first responders to 911 calls. On Aug. 24, the district reported to police that Stephens had deliberately disconnected 911 calls without obtaining vital information or informing other dispatchers about the callers who were in need of help.

The usual GOP trick is to rig the primary with enough stalking horse contenders posing as Tea Party types, thus swamping any honest contenders, and then voters "hold their nose" in the general and we're stuck with the party's preferred crook.
