In the last installment of the saga of the runaway Texas Democrats, Gene Wu was crowing about securing an order in Harris County preventing him from being arrested and dragged back to the House so that they could have a quorum, despite the arrest warrants being signed and the House Sergeant at Arms serving them at the offices of the legislators.
From Reuters:
“I was the crash test dummy,” Wu told Reuters from the Houston courthouse on Thursday, where he was helping file applications for the same type of writ for 44 other Democratic lawmakers.
Wu said the writs were temporary, pending the court’s review

New York’s COVID Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Act says that if a tenant self-certifies his or her financial hardship, landlords generally cannot contest that certification in court. Instead, the tenant is free to remain in the property without paying rent.
Today, the Supreme Court lifted this particular ban on evictions. The Court did not disturb the provision in the same law that instructs New York courts to entertain a covid-related hardship defense in eviction proceedings, assessing a tenant’s income prior to covid, income during covid, liquid assets, and ability to obtain government assistance. The landlords who brought the case did not seek such relief.

The 2020 Census has revealed that America's white population is shrinking and is now less than 60 percent for the first time on record, with nearly 20million fewer white Americans alive today than ten years ago.White Americans make up 57.8 percent of the country, according to the data that was released on Thursday, a decrease of over 6 percent since 2010. That is the number of people who replied 'white alone, non Hispanic or Latino' to the survey. Another group who just answered 'white alone' make up 61 percent of the country, according to a data map. The Pentagon is sending troops back to Afghanistan to evacuate some personnel from the US embassy as the Taliban surges into the capital, Kabul, according to the Associated Press.
By Thursday, Taliban fighters had occupied Herat, the third largest city in Afghanistan, and took control of 11 of the 34 state capitals. Radical groups are said to occupy Kandahar, the second largest city in the country after Kabul.
Earlier, US negotiators were reported to have sought guarantees from the Taliban that militant groups would not chase the US embassy if they overtook Kabul.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced Thursday that border patrol agents apprehended over 212,000 undocumented migrants in July, breaking the 200,000 threshold for the first time in 21 years, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data.
During a stop at the border in Texas, Mayorkas commented that 212,672 migrants were encountered in July, a 13 percent increase over the influx of 188,000 migrants encountered in June. He acknowledged that the rapidly deteriorating situation at the border constitutes a crisis, calling it “one of the toughest challenges we face.”
He added that 95,788 of those detainees, mostly single adults rather than families, were expelled under Trump-era Title 42

The Supreme Court denied Thursday the petition of eight Indiana University students asking to block the school’s requirement that students receive the COVID vaccine as a condition of fall enrollment.
Newly confirmed conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett was charged with reviewing the legal challenge to the college’s rule and refused to block it. No other justices on the bench offered a dissenting opinion.
The case originated when a group of Indiana students asked the court for an emergency order striking down the mandate, claiming that the potential harm of inoculation exceeded the merits of protection against the disease for their age demographic.

The White House would have looked entirely different today if it weren’t for an intense competition to determine its design. In 1792, George Washington spearheaded a contest for those interested in designing the president’s home. Irish-born James Hoban ended up the lucky winner after his neoclassical mansion — known today as the White House — was chosen. But as with any competition, several entries were rejected. For the first time ever, The Post has obtained the sketches of what the White House could have looked like — had a different entry been selected.

The Texas Senate voted to advance a major Republican voting bill on Thursday in an 18-11 vote, along party lines.
Senate Bill 1 passed after state Senator Carol Alvarado finished a 15-hour talking filibuster in an attempt to delay the vote. Filibuster rules prohibited Albarado from eating, sitting down, leaning on her desk, taking a bathroom break or speaking about subjects unrelated to the bill.
The all-night filibuster came one day after Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, a Republican, signed arrest warrants for 52 Democrats who did not return during the fourth day of the House’s second special session. The Democrats’ absence left the chamber eight members short of a quorum.

The emergence of 69-year-old talk show host Larry Elder as the leading candidate to depose California’s Gavin Newsom is both odd and significant. Elder is no one’s idea of a politician, and when he called me for advice at the start of his run, I was perplexed. I thought Larry had it all — the nest egg, nice house, successful career.
Newsom, who I once described as Governor Preen, and his operatives in and out of the media, have already started attacking Elder. Under the talk show host, they claim, abortion rights will be restricted and the state’s crusade against climate change and social justice will be hampered.

You’ll be surprised to find that this isn’t the case.

Amid disagreement among Catholic leaders over whether there is a moral obligation to receive a coronavirus vaccine, board members at the National Catholic Bioethics Center have told CNA that Blase Cardinal Cupich has urged that the center retract its guidance against mandated immunization.
One board member told CNA that Cardinal Cupich has been “leaning hard” on the bishops and some prominent lay board members, but did not elaborate on specific names. The NCBC board members spoke with CNA on the condition they not be identified by name.
The Archdiocese of Chicago did not respond to CNA’s request for comment.

Prosecutors in the cases against the January 6 demonstrators are starting to run into some judicial pushback: Questions about exculpatory evidence in their possession not turned over as the law demands, lower courts assessing the defendant as more dangerous than the evidence warranted, and most significantly, whether the prosecution is overcharging defendants with the federal crime of obstruction.
Most of the defendants are charged with knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted area -- a fancy way of saying trespassing. Defendants are entitled to see before pleading to the charges any materially exculpatory evidence

Americans are growing angrier by the day in a way different from prior sagebrush revolts such as the 1960s Silent Majority or Tea Party furor of over a decade ago.
The rage at the current status quo this time is not just fueled by conservatives. For the first time in their lives, all Americans of all classes and races are starting to fear a self-created apocalypse that threatens their families’ safety and the American way of life.

Another “progressive” politician has ordered the people she believes are her subjects to wear masks indoors. For safety’s sake? Let’s not fool ourselves.
As if following the Petty Tyrants chapter from the Democratic Party playbook, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced Tuesday that Oregonians, vaccinated or not, will again have to cover their faces in all indoor public spaces. Because she’s smarter and just more sensible than those living under her rule.

The sendoff of fallen Chicago police Officer Ella French was reportedly rushed by the department’s No. 2 official – and former Chicago police Superintendent Garry McCarthy argued it reflected a nationwide lack of support for police officers from government leaders.
"The officers here in CPD and probably across the country … feel under attack by politicians and the public," McCarthy said Wednesday during an appearance on Fox News' "The Story." "Most of them feel like they’re not being supported by their leadership."

Are they still protesting in Cuba?
I don’t know.
The Cuban government has shut off the Cuban people’s internet.
The big demonstrations began four weeks ago, sparked, curiously, by a rap song. The key lyric is: “Freedom! No more Doctrine!”
“Doctrine” refers to the “constant cycle of propaganda” from the government, explains Cuban emigre Alian Collazo in my newest video.
Sadly, silly TV reporters in America claimed the protests were about “hunger, pandemic restrictions and the lack of COVID vaccinations,” or, according to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, “food and fuel shortages.”

Another day, another instance of a Big Tech company censoring content it doesn’t like.
This time, YouTube—owned by Google—took down a video by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., in which he discusses face masks and COVID-19. YouTube also banned Paul from its platform for a week.
“We removed content from Senator Paul’s channel for including claims that masks are ineffective in preventing the contraction or transmission of COVID-19, in accordance with our COVID-19 medical misinformation policies,” YouTube said in a public statement.
Notably, YouTube’s policy cites the World Health Organization and “local authorities” as its source of what’s correct about COVID-19.

The infrastructure bill the Senate passed Tuesday discriminates against white people at every turn.Americans are enthusiastic about spending money on physical infrastructure — bridges, roads, broadband. But this racist bill hands out jobs and contracts and locates projects based on race, not merit. Minority businesses and neighborhoods hold the inside track. If you’re white, you’re low priority. The bill includes grants to install solar or wind technologies and generate jobs in areas decimated by closing coal mines or coal-fired electric plants. Here’s the catch: When contractors bid, the bill says minority-owned businesses will get selected first.

President Joe Biden mistakenly referred to Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) as “Jennifer” on Wednesday, likely referring to former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D).“Thank you Jennifer for what you’ve done, and continue to do,” Biden said after Whitmer finished speaking.Granholm, who was governor of Michigan from 2003 to 2011 is now Biden’s secretary of energy. The president made his mistake during a video conference call with governors and local leaders to talk about the bipartisan infrastructure bill that passed the Senate on Tuesday.Biden repeatedly referred to Whitmer, praising her campaign slogan of “fix the damn roads”

Joe Biden held a virtual meeting on infrastructure today with some governors, mayors, and other officials to push his infrastructure plan.
Among the people in attendance was Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
But Biden appeared to get confused while addressing her at one point. Despite the fact that her picture was on the screen with her name in big, bold letters, Biden still referred to her as “Jennifer” as he thanked her for the work that “you’ve done and continue to do.” It appeared that Biden confused Whitmer with the former governor of Michigan, Jennifer Granholm, who held that position from 2003-2011. But now she’s serving as Biden’s energy secretary.
