LAME DEER, Mont.—A wildfire bore down on rural southeastern Montana towns Thursday as continuing hot, dry weather throughout the West drove flames through more than a dozen states.Several thousand people remained under evacuation orders as the Richard Spring Fire advanced across the sparsely-populated Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation.Meanwhile, the Dixie Fire — which started July 13 and is the largest wildfire burning in the nation — threatened a dozen small communities in the northern Sierra Nevada even though its southern end was mostly corralled by fire lines. The blaze had burned over 780 square miles, destroyed some 550 homes

Those poor people. Out west, it is hell on earth right now. In my neck of the woods in western Colorado, we have dodged the bullet so far. By the Grace of God, the Colorado National Monument and the Grand Mesa are seeing daily rains. But, the air quality from fires west of here is horrible and almost unbreathable.

I will sure keep #1 and his family and property in my prayers. We have lived out West on edge of massive forest. It was in the Tillamook county area of Western Oregon. Of course, back in the 90’s, the Dept of Interior under Bill Clinton was just starting to put really stupid forestry mismanagement practices in place. Oregon certainly paying a heavy price now.
Our friends in the Flathead Valley of Montana have had to be mostly inside for well over a week due to horrible smoky air. They are not in fire danger directly but smoke blows in from WA, OR and from a fire on Montana-Canada border area. Its scary bad.

The Denver area has had air quality warnings for over 50 consecutive days, caused by smoke from the California fires. My eyes water constantly, and even a short time out in the yard triggers coughing and sneezing. Longer times outside trigger headaches. Global warming is the excuse officials use to cover up the consequences of their destructive forestry policies. Once again, the people who are suffering the most are not the people setting the policies.

Every summer, fires rage.
Some of them are natural. Others are set by leftists and likely some are set by terrorists, some are set by idiots, too. The one that burned well over 100,000 acres, destroyed 140 homes and after traveling ~15 miles was stopped about 200 yards from my vacation home was set by a Danish illegal who was squatting on someone else's land, and was in Colorado because dope was legalized. He was arrested and is in jail, and reports are that he has mental problems. My guess is, at 52, a lifetime of too many drugs has caught up with him. One of the benefits of legalized dope is you attract a fine class of losers and morons, from around the world.

They mention keeping track of hikers is a problem. Some years ago, hiking many, many miles from the trailhead, and camped well off trail, we awoke to the roar of helo blades. Climbing a few hundred feet to a nearby ridge, we watched a substantial wilderness wildfire being fought by a helo, fortunately many nearby lakes for water. We realized that if the wind shifted we were potentially in peril, so packed up camp and moved directly away from the fire area. We could see the smoke from the next mountain over later in the day, but apparently they managed to put it out the following day.
Unfortunately, forest fires are a reality that will never go away. Logging provides fire breaks and prevents buildup of dead and dying trees, but logging has been literally wiped out in the west in the last 40 years by the eco crazies.
Cut it for timber or let it burn. Trees will be gone and regrown, one way or the other. What's the old saying,"Pay me now or pay me later?"
