Criminal attack? You're on your own

My first article for American Thinker, on 12-13-23, was The police won’t protect you; you’re on your own. It was about Castle Rock v. Gonzales (US Supreme Court, 2005). On June 22, 1999 at 5:00 PM in Castle Rock, Colorado, Jessica Gonzalez’s three daughters, 7, 9, and 10, were playing in her yard. Violating a custody agreement and restraining order her estranged husband took the girls without her knowledge. At 7:30 PM Jessica called the police. She showed them copies of the custody agreement and the restraining order and begged them to return her daughters

Comments:

Lest you imagine that the case that is explained is unusual, or that the court 'decided wrongly', a substantial number of different examples of egregious police lack of effort that resulted in death or severe harm have been fully adjudicated, and always the police are absolved of any responsibility whatsoever to protect any particular person. If police officers don't act to help you, nothing at all will be done to them. Our protection is effectively up to the conscience of the individual officer.
This is why I am always armed where it is legal, and avoid locations where it is not legal.

A serious question then. Who enforces a restraining order? If not the police then what’s the point of one?

If I were in danger of attack - - and I came upon a female police officer - - I'd keep running until I found a big, strong male police officer.

There is nothing in writing that says a police officer has to save your life. The officers who jump into the water to save your life do it out of the goodness of their heart. They don’t sign a contract to risk their life by saving anyone. SS is different story But couldn’t that police officer have told that person to get into her car and leave the area. Yes the car got vandalized, but the person Woukd have been safe.

One of the virtues of being a mentally healthy person in an honest society is that you don’t have to deal with cognitive dissonance. That is, there are no moments when you are forced to accept two entirely conflicting facts or values. Instead, you have the mental freedom to work through the conflict and come out with an honest evaluation. When people lack that honesty and liberty, the only refuge is delusions and heartfelt lies to themselves. That shows up in a very funny video from February that’s starting to gain deserved traction.

A leftist characteristic is the willingness to bend reality to political ends—and nobody does it better than the credentialed class. Indeed, the more credentialed, the better at bending. Two examples will suffice: The first is a PolySci major insisting that women are every bit as fast and strong as men, which could be laughed off by saying she’s not a science major. However, the second example is a man with a Ph.D. in “Molecular and Cell Biology” denying that race exists. Democrat Pennsylvania State Sen. Lindsey Williams [snip] defended men in women’s sports by insisting that “female bodies are just as strong, fast, and capable as male bodies.”

An Israeli biotech firm says it is nearing human trials for a breakthrough drug that could extend human lifespan by up to 30 percent by targeting the age-regulating protein SIRT-6, which the company says would also improve brain function, organ health, and overall vitality. On Friday, Israeli news site N12 reported that Tel Aviv-based Sirtlab is preparing to launch clinical trials on a drug designed to stimulate SIRT-6, a protein associated with youth, vitality, and disease resistance. The treatment could be available within three years, pending successful trials and regulatory approval.

The practice by which Our Honest Media™ keeps certain events from the peasantry to assure that we don’t get confused goes back a long way. In the mid-70s, something amounting to a civil war occurred among California leftists featuring kidnappings, purge trials, and executions carried out in lonely spots in the mountains. This went completely unmentioned in the media of the day, due largely, no doubt, to the participation of members of the protected classes (A number of them were ex-Black Panthers).

The last surviving pilot of the Battle of Britain has died, severing the last living link to the few thousand young men who fought the Nazi air force to a standstill amid fears that Britain might be forced to capitulate during the early months of World War II. John “Paddy” Hemingway, an Irish national who enlisted in the Royal Air Force before the war began, died Monday at his home in Dublin, the RAF said. He was 105. Hemingway was just 20 years old when he and his comrades in the Royal Air Force took to the skies to fight off wave after wave of Nazi aircraft that sought to pound Britain

No new water storage infrastructure has been built in California, more than a decade after voters approved a $7.5 billion water bond in Proposition 1 of 2014. The San Jose Mercury-News reported Wednesday that officials are deciding what to do with nearly half a billion dollars of available cash after the “collapse” of a project to expand the Los Vaqueros Reservoir, which is east of San Francisco. Other projects have received funding for planning and permitting, but nothing has been built. The newspaper noted: A majority of the seven board members of the California Water Commission, a state agency that distributes funding to build reservoirs and other water projects

Copenhagen will set out this week plans to “increase the fighting power of Danish defence”, Prime Minister Frederiksen said on Tuesday in what may be seen as the first major domino to fall in U.S. President Donald Trump’s goal of transforming the security architecture of the Western NATO military alliance. “We have to rearm massively to look after Denmark.

The Biden administration awarded Canadian electric bus company Lion Electric nearly $160 million to manufacture hundreds of battery-powered buses for school districts nationwide as part of its sweeping climate agenda. In recent weeks, Lion has initiated bankruptcy proceedings, laid off all employees tasked with building its buses, and paused manufacturing operations. Lion's financial demise leaves dozens of school districts—including those in California, Montana, North Dakota, Iowa, Alabama, and Maryland—questioning whether they will receive the buses the Biden administration promised them. Lion has yet to deliver $95 million worth of electric buses to 55 districts across the country, according to federal data reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon.

The California FAIR Plan was organized by the state in 1968 as the insurer of last resort for fire insurance when a relatively small number of high-risk homeowners were unable to obtain policies from commercial insurance companies following a series of wildfires. Since 2018, under Governor Gavin Newsom, FAIR plan policyholders have grown from 150,000 to more than 450,000 as commercial insurers have left California due to premium adequacy issues. While organized by the state, the FAIR Plan has no explicit financial support or guaranty from it. The plan’s financial resources, even before recent events, were measured in hundreds of millions of dollars compared with hundreds of billions in exposures.

The Biden administration wasted $236 billion in improper payments throughout 71 federal programs in 2023, according to the Government Accountability Office. The improper payments underscore President Donald Trump’s vow to clean up the administrative state and his support of DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) and of Elon Musk’s audit of the federal government to cut waste, fraud, and abuse. The massive sum — three-quarters of which was reportedly overpayments – was just a portion of the federal deficit ($1.8 trillion) under the Biden administration.

The Senate on Monday confirmed fossil fuel executive Chris Wright to serve as energy secretary, a key post to promote President Donald Trump’s efforts to achieve U.S. “energy dominance” in the global market. Wright, CEO of Denver-based Liberty Energy, has been one of the industry’s loudest voices against efforts to fight climate change. He says more fossil fuel production can lift people out of poverty around the globe and has promised to help Trump “unleash energy security and prosperity.” The Senate approved his nomination, 59-38. Eight Democrats — including both senators from Wright’s home state of Colorado — voted in favor.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday evening abolishing union rights at more than two dozen federal agencies and offices, in a major expansion of the administration’s efforts to shrink the federal government. The White House cited national security concerns for terminating workers’ ability to bargain collectively, but the order applies at agencies with both direct and indirect links to national security.

It’s not entirely clear if he was real or fictional. Most historians believe he was probably real, but it’s tricky to verify: The legend of Lucius Cincinnatus was (enthusiastically) retold in Titus “Livy” Livius’ book, the “History of Rome,” which was written a few decades before Christ. Unquestionably, Livius’ book included real, verifiable, historic events, but it also included the mythology of the Trojan War and tales of magical twins suckled by a she-wolf. But the legend of Lucius Cincinnatus still endures. He’s even the namesake of an American city in southwest Ohio. And his story continues to influence kings, queens, emperors, and (yes) even U.S. presidents.
