Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stepped Democrats away from the edge of a shutdown on Thursday — warning that repercussions of closing the federal government would be worse than the only viable alternative, passing the House GOP funding bill that many in Schumer's party loathe. Schumer’s remarks — made first during a closed-door lunch with his colleagues Thursday and then from the Senate floor in a lengthy speech — are a significant indication that enough Senate Democrats will vote to advance the House GOP bill and avoid a shutdown that would start after midnight Friday. “It’s not really a decision. It’s a Hobson’s choice,"

Makes you wonder why he caved-there's been mention of someone screaming during the Dem Senate's lunch today at their retreat in Virginia. Speculation is that it was Gillibrand yelling-maybe she told Schumer he was destroying the party by not voting for the CR?

Schumer found out that the Democrats were going to carry the burden of the shutdown and chickened out. Now we won't have to listen to this same Sh-tuff next month and every month after that. The Democrats need to wake up and start doing what's right for America for a change.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) insists President Trump is trying to start a civil war in this country and indicated it would take incredible restraint from the left not to fight back. Waters, speaking at a Democrat retreat in Northern Virginia, made repeated assertions that Trump is gearing up for war. She kicked off the unhinged commentary by telling reporters the administration's efforts to reign in fraud, waste, and abuse in the federal government would leave seniors suffering and "homeless people ... on the street." “And so when that happens, what does Trump expect?"

I think we all knew this was coming. As Ed pointed out a few hours ago, Schumer had already signaled he was caving by lunchtime today. So this afternoon he made it official in another speech. "Republican rejection leads us to a decision, and it's not really a decision it's a Hobson's choice," Schumer said. He continued, "Either proceed with the bill before us or risk Donald Trump throwing America into the chaos of a shutdown. This is my view is no choice at all. "While the CR bill is very bad, the potential for a shutdown has consequences for America that are much, much worse."

Columbia University announced Thursday it has expelled or suspended students who expressed anti-Israel sentiments while occupying a campus building last spring. The Ivy League school has also revoked the diplomas of some graduates. Columbia’s judicial board issued “multi-year suspensions, temporary degree revocations, and expulsions” related to the forcible takeover of Hamilton Hall, the New York university said in a campus-wide email. The number of punished students was not provided. The announcement comes as Columbia faces a fierce crackdown from the Trump administration over the elite school’s failure to protect Jewish students and punish those engaging in antisemitism on campus.

The Trump administration and Department of Government Efficiency are proposing a dramatic downsizing of the IRS that would result in a nearly 20% reduction of its workforce by May 15 — one month after Tax Day in the United States. President Donald Trump has ordered agencies across the federal government to turn in their “large scale” layoff plans — known as Reduction in Force, or RIF — by Thursday. The details of the IRS proposal have been laid out in an email from DOGE and will be discussed at a meeting among agency leadership Thursday morning, according to a source familiar with the matter who asked to remain anonymous for fear

A mere day after Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) proclaimed that Republicans don't have the votes to clear the way for a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government through September, the New York Democrat has caved and will vote for cloture to allow the recently passed CR a vote in the Senate. "Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House CR," Schumer proclaimed Wednesday. "Funding the government should be a bipartisan effort, but Republicans chose a partisan path drafting their continuing resolution without any input from congressional Democrats." Elon Musk visited the National Security Agency on Wednesday, according to an agency spokesperson. The initially undisclosed meeting comes roughly a week after the Trump ally said the U.S. intelligence agency needed to be overhauled. Musk’s visit was first reported by The Wall Street Journal. A NSA spokesperson confirmed that Musk met with NSA chief Gen. Timothy Haugh in what was Musk’s first visit to the agency. While it remains unclear what Musk and Haugh discussed, NSA’s statement said the meeting helped facilitate coordination between the agency and the Trump administration. “NSA and CYBERCOM are focused on the president, SECDEF and DNI’s priorities;

Washington — A federal judge in California ordered six federal agencies to reinstate probationary employees who were fired last month, finding that their terminations by the Office of Personnel Management were unlawful. He said that neither OPM nor its Acting Director Charles Ezell had the authority to direct the terminations across agencies. The order extends relief to fired workers at the Departments of Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, Defense, Energy, Interior and Treasury. But many prominent allies he consulted believed he could not realistically pursue the Senate seat while

Democrat governors have a “resistance” playbook created for them that includes draft executive orders to defy the administration’s immigration policies as well as instructions on deploying the National Guard. The Governors Action Alliance, a Democrat organization that founded the group Governors Safeguarding Democracy, provided such guidance to the staffs of Democrat governors across the country after the election of President Donald Trump. The 126 pages of the playbook—including emails, talking points, and a “Firewalling for Freedom – Template Gubernatorial Executive Order”—were obtained in a public records request from the office of Pennsylvania Gov.
