US President Donald Trump has threatened a 200% tariff on any alcohol coming to the US from the European Union (EU) in the latest twist of an escalating trade war. The threat is a response to the EU's plans for a 50% tax on imports of US-produced whiskey as part of its retaliation to Trump's tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports to the US. The US president called for the immediate removal of the EU's "nasty" tariff on US whiskey, calling the bloc "hostile and abusive" and "formed for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States".

Never liked the taste any alcoholic beverages or the effects on me, so haven't had a drink in about 50+ years.
This won't affect me or my wife, but the French make a lot of money from wine, so this will hurt them.
I hear from friends that many American wines are top grade, this should help their business.

Thank you President Trump. He is hammering the EU in an industry essential to Europe but unnecessary to the US. We have plenty of good wine and other beverages homegrown. EU loses immensely in this trade war. Trumps picks his battles where he can only win. Nice to have an international businessman in office that understands trade.

Something the government is doing that doesn't affect me, as a non-drinker, in the least. But it'll get the libs wailing and screaming, just because...

This should get their attention. President Trump means Business. Stop ripping us off. Fair trade or no trade. This would be devastating for them. They should reconsider, soon.

Somebody should explain to Rand Paul that this is really a good thing. His whining is getting old. Most American wines are descendants of the finer grapes of Italy, France and Spain. Kiss Europe goodbye.

Alcohol in moderation has wonderful potential benefit. However, as used over time and presently, is net very destructive to individual and society.

I enjoy a drink or three from time to time. Most of what I like is locally produced moonshine, but have found Greek wines to be excellent, as well as some German beer and French wine. Still, there are plenty of domestic choices of everything. This wont effect me much, if at all.

He should make all sparkling wine producers label their product Champagne.
And as I go get a screwdriver so I can take the little plastic cover off my flashlight just to replace the batteries I am ready to see CE products banned.

French wines are the best in the world for the price point bar none. I won't argue that point because I know I am right. We stocked up on our favorites and ordered our favorites from France prior to this latest predictable tariff scuffle.
France has used tariffs for protectionism, it is obvious whenever you go to the grocery there which is one of our favorite things to do in France, don't laugh. The French protect their agricultural and industrial interest in order to protect their farmers and other tradesmen. High time we did the same!!
That said, the wine people of France are the rural people, aka the Conservative people, the farmers. We will be hurting our kind of people with this and that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I do not like to think about a 6-12 month long fight over this and how many wine making families will be forced under by such a fight. This needs to be settled fast.
