Less than four months after Alaska voters rejected a ballot measure to repeal Alaska’s ranked choice voting and open primary system, the state’s lieutenant governor has OK’d a new petition-gathering effort to repeal the system. Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom announced on Monday that she had approved certifying that the proposed ballot measure was in the proper form. This allows the sponsors to begin gathering signatures. They will need to collect at least 34,099 signatures of registered voters, (snip)to place the measure on the ballot in 2026. The 2024 ballot measure to repeal the voting system lost by a narrow margin — just 737 votes of 320,985 ballots cast.
Tesla and X CEO-turned-special government employee Elon Musk claimed to have uncovered “the biggest fraud in history” when he stumbled across more than 20 million people listed in the Social Security database as over 100 years old.

"The Order directs policy recommendations to protect IVF access and aggressively reduce out-of-pocket and health plan costs for such treatments," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote in a post on the social platform X.

Apprehensions at the U.S. southern border hit a low mark not seen since the last time President Donald Trump was in office.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) apprehended just 29,116 illegal immigrants along the southern border during the month of January, down from 47,000 in December and hitting a low mark not seen since May 2020, when 32,349 arrests were made at ports of entry, according to a White House press release.
Overall, CBP apprehended 61,465 illegal immigrants at the southern border in January, down 36% from the prior month, the release notes, citing new CP data.

A federal judge has declined to grant a request for a temporary restraining order in the case brought by state attorneys general arguing that Elon Musk's appointment to make sweeping government changes was illegal. On Feb. 13, 14 attorneys general sued Musk, the so-called Department of Government Efficiency and President Donald Trump, alleging that President Trump had violated the Appointments Clause of the Constitution. The suit argues that any power to change government through the so-called Department of Government Efficiency must be granted by the Senate, not the president.

The Biden administration spent tens of billions of dollars on grants to migrants and refugees through one of its government agencies, including over $10 billion in just one year, according to a new watchdog report.
The watchdog group Open the Books looked at grants to nonprofits awarded by the Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Refugee Resettlement. Its responsibilities include caring for unaccompanied migrant children who crossed the southern border illegally and refugees entering legally.
The watchdog found that in FY 2021, it distributed $2.4 billion in grants to nonprofits. In FY 2022, it distributed $3.4 billion, then that number skyrocketed up to $10 billion in FY 2023
Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced Tuesday he’s leaving his post and urged the Postal Service Board of Governors to start the search for a replacement.
Mr. DeJoy didn’t say when he’s stepping down from the position that he’s held since 2020.

Native American activist Leonard Peltier, who was convicted of killing two FBI agents on a South Dakota reservation 50 years ago, was released from prison on Tuesday after former President Joe Biden commuted his life sentence.
Peltier, 80, is now free to return to his reservation in North Dakota to spend his remaining years confined in his home.
In June 1975, Peltier murdered FBI agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. According to FBI files, the agents traveled there to serve arrest warrants for robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon to other suspects.
A high-level diplomatic meeting between USA and Russia has not happened in more than three years. The Social Security Administration’s acting commissioner reportedly resigned over the weekend after a dispute with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) over the Elon Musk-headed group’s efforts to access sensitive government records.
Michelle King, a career federal worker who had been with SSA since 1994, quit over the DOGE disagreement Saturday and was replaced by Leland Dudek, the Washington Post reported on Monday.
Dudek, who has been supportive of DOGE’s efforts to root out waste, fraud and abuse in the federal government, will serve as acting commissioner of SSA until President Trump’s pick to lead the agency, Frank Bisignano, is confirmed by the Senate, according to the outlet.

Although the crashes occurred under the Trump administration, Swalwell’s partisan rhetoric once again attempts to deflect responsibility from the previous administration’s actions. His remarks exemplify how some Democrats continue to blame Trump for anything and everything, even when it lacks justification.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced Monday that some $4.7 trillion in payments from the Treasury Department were missing a critical tracking code which made tracing the transactions “almost impossible.”
The transactions were reportedly missing the Treasury Account Symbol, or TAS, an identification code which links a Treasury payment to a budget line item, according to DOGE, which described the use of such code as a “standard financial process.”
“In the Federal Government, the TAS field was optional for ~$4.7 Trillion in payments and was often left blank, making traceability almost impossible,” read an X post from DOGE.
The Washington Post is reporting that DOGE fired thousands of government employees over the weekend, many of whom were on probationary status often reserved for new hires.
Many federal government employees were dismissed over the holiday weekend as managers confronted a Trump administration demand to fire workers by Tuesday. In group texts and in online forums, they dubbed the error-ridden run of firings the “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.”
The firings targeted new hires on probation, who have fewer protections than permanent employees, and swept up people with years of service who had recently transferred between agencies, as well as military veterans and people with disabilities
