Is Colombia seeing more war than peace?

When President Gustavo Petro took office in 2022, he aimed to bring about comprehensive peace in Colombia. But this now seems a remote dream amid the latest violence. DW presents questions and answers on the situation. Since January 16, the guerilla group ELN and offshoots of the former militant organization FARC have been fighting each other in the Catatumbo region in the northeast of Columbia near the border to Venezuela. At least 80 people have died so far in the violence. At least 20 more people have been killed in clashes in the Amazonas region in the south of the country between rival splinter groups of FARC.

Hmmm.... 80 people killed in one area, and 20 in another. Sounds like a hot summer weekend in Chit-Congo, IL, and St; Louis, MO.

I can't recall which country - Cuba or Nicaragua, back the Farc Rebels. They are essentially hired mercenaries When one group is killed off or retires, they just hire and arm more. He'd make more progress if he retaliated against the sponsoring country. It's like Israel and Hamas, or Hezbollah. Israel is actually fighting the proxies of Iran. They don't make real progress unless they attack the military controllers of those groups.

I've lived in Colombia for over nine years, and the situation is terrible. Petro tried to increase dielsel prices by $2.00 a gallon and the trucker (rightfully) blocked the highways, and was forced to relent. He tried to increase property taxes, even on the very poor, by 500% and that was resoundingly rejected by the Congress of Colombia. He introduced a bill to amend the Colombian constitution and annoint himself president-for life, but failed miserably. Petro is a laughingstock, and a dangerous one at that. Gustavo Petro doesn't want peace in Colombia, he wants total power, like his great pal Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela. His utter failure has been a joy to watch, and he'll be out of power in August of 2026. (The armed forces won't support him either; they can't stand him.) ¡Fuera Gustavo Petro!

When your country has been built on a foundation of drugs, things are never going to be peaceful.

President Donald Trump has been emphatic about his desire to acquire Greenland — the latest development in an eventful saga going back over 150 years. The world’s largest island has long presented an attractive prospect for American power projection. Located on the United States’s northeastern flank, developments in technology and the changing need for resources have only made the target more tempting. Before Trump’s efforts in 2019 and 2024-25, the U.S. undertook at least three major attempts to acquire Greenland throughout its history. Here’s what happened the last three times the U.S. tried to acquire Greenland.

On January 21st, 2025, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance attended the Service of Prayer for the Nation at the National Cathedral. As a believer, I attended the service for the purpose of praying for our nation, President Trump, the president’s family, and the success of his administration. I purposely left the prayer service early after realizing how the pulpit was being used for left-wing activism and not for true worship unto God, to seek His will and wisdom. Mr. President, what accosted you at the prayer service was political–not biblical.

Donald Trump won the 2024 election in part because the Left's hysterical style of attacking Trump no longer worked. After a decade of this unhinged furor, it proved worthless in winning public support -- and for two simple reasons. One, after years of Russian collusion hoaxes, the laptop disinformation farce, and the warped lies about the "suckers" and "fine people on both sides" -- the shrill Left became predictable. So, the bored public began tuning them out, switching channels, hitting the mute button, and pulling the plug.

One of President Donald Trump's top congressional allies introduced a resolution on Thursday evening to allow the commander-in-chief a third term. Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., is pushing a new amendment to the Constitution that would give a president three terms in office, but no more than two consecutive four-year stints. The amendment would say, "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than

Jaws dropped throughout Washington’s National Cathedral when an egomaniacal female Episcopal bishop sabotaged the Inaugural Prayer Service with a left-wing rant from the pulpit about illegal migrants and LGBT issues, aimed directly at President Trump, who was sitting politely in the front pew. What the Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, 65, was supposed to do Tuesday, at the historical interfaith service, was to bless the incoming administration and pray for God’s guidance and protection for the nation. She should have been fostering unity, not exacerbating false divides and making the ceremony all about her.

I was in Florida last week, the day Tim Kaine attacked Pete Hegseth during his confirmation hearings. Kaine is the type of guy who doesn’t know what a “first down” is. Hegseth is a bad ass, highly decorated Army officer who served in combat roles in Iraq and Afghanistan. My phone was blowing-up all day by friends who were outraged by Kaine’s treatment of Hegseth, rebuking him for having an affair and a couple of instances of rowdy behavior.

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., and all other Senate Democrats blocked the "Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act" from advancing in the chamber on Wednesday. The measure would require healthcare practitioners to seek to save the life of a baby born during an attempted abortion, and ensure that the infant is hospitalized. "I’ve always stood on the side of Roe and a woman’s right to make her own health care choices. It’s absurd to mandate criminalization because of those choices. Any bill that does so, including the Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act, is a NO from me," Fetterman declared in a post on X.

Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde responded to President Donald Trump's criticism of comments she made during her sermon at the Washington National Cathedral on Tuesday. On Trump's first full day of his second term, Budde, of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, delivered a sermon focused on "unity," also targeting specific comments directly at Trump on issues like illegal immigration and LGBTQ youth. Trump and Vice President JD Vance sat stone-faced as she urged Trump to "have mercy," and the president indicated to reporters afterward he didn't care for the remarks.

"Europe's failure to invest in military capabilities also sends a dangerous signal to the aggressor. Weakness invites them in," Kallas said. The final corruption of Joe Biden 4 replies

With only 15 minutes to go as president, Joe Biden snatched infamy from the jaws of obscurity. With record-low polling and widely viewed as a “failed” president, Biden completed his one-man race to the bottom of ethics by issuing preemptive pardons to members of his own family. The pardons were timed to guarantee that the media would not focus on yet another unethical act by this president. He need not have worried. For four years, the media worked tirelessly to deny or deflect the corruption scandal surrounding the Biden family. The pardoning of James Biden, Sara Jones Biden, Valerie Biden Owens, John Owens and

Good afternoon. This is the first of my twice-weekly columns under a new format. The “Morning Note” lasted more than a decade, so it was time for a change. For starters, this newsletter will appear on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. I previously focused on meaningful dates in U.S. history (and got a book out of it), and also used the format for a “quote of the week,” which was also usually a blast from the past. “Cannon Fodder” will be timelier. I will still highlight stories and columns from RealClearPolitics and our sister sites, but the list will be more selective. So here we go

A “Calexit” initiative to allow California to secede from the United States has been cleared to legally gather signatures. If passed, the proposed measure — “Calexit,” a nod to the Brexit vote in the UK — would be on the ballot in 2028 and ask voters: “Should California leave the United States and become a free and independent country?” For the measure to pass, at least 50% of registered voters must participate in the election, and at least 55% — or more than 500,000 people, must vote “yes” by July 22.

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had good qualities. He pushed through Trump’s judicial nominees during the first presidency, got his tax cuts passed, and is a noted legislative strategist and tactician. It doesn’t mean he always bats a thousand, but McConnell got key portions of the Trump agenda passed after the 2016 election. Now, he’s erased all that goodwill with this dastardly vote against Pete Hegseth for secretary of defense. McConnell’s defection, plus that of Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Susan Collins (R-ME), led to Vice President JD Vance performing his constitutional duty to break the tie.

The CIA has today revealed its belief that COVID-19 was likely leaked from a Chinese lab after years of denial under the Biden administration. A spokesperson for the agency said on Saturday that they now favor the lab theory. Officials said that there is no new evidence behind their shift in opinion - it is based on the same evidence they have been mulling over for months. 'CIA assesses with low confidence that a research-related origin of the COVID-19 pandemic is more likely than a natural origin based on the available body of reporting.

The request has sparked debate over accountability and the handling of the withdrawal, with Trump arguing that the gear should never have been abandoned in the first place. However, the Taliban is refusing to give it back to its rightful owners.
