Let's Aim for Historical Accuracy

As an amateur historian -- and probably not a good one -- I go nuts when I see amateurish fictions tendered as core premises. This is no more frequently found than in Hollywood; but do not kid yourself, it is not confined to Hollywood...Of course, there are other mistakes, but the grandest mistake of all is Islam. It is now coming out into the popular realm that the historicity of Mohammed may be a total fabrication. Not merely a distortion, but a total fabrication. Robert Spencer has written a polemic questioning the whole historicity of Islam’s founder. And not just Robert Spencer, but Dr. Jay Smith.

Comments:

Is it possible that the very existence of Mohammad, the high prophet of Islam is a complete fabrication and never existed? That Islam itself is a total fraud? Konrad makes a solid scholarly case for that proposition.

I certainly do not know about the historical fact of Islam's existence, but I do know that calling it a religion is wrong . The is God. There is no Allah. The two could not exist in the same dimension, unless Allah is Satan by another name.

Perhaps this is why violence and purge is the solution to "non believers". Too many holes in the story.

For years, I have believed -and said- that 'Anthropogenic Climate Disruption' (I THINK that's what they're calling it these days) was the biggest SCAM in history. If this writer is correct, I'll have to demote Anthropogenic Climate Disruption' to SECOND biggest SCAM in history.

I have been reading up on this stuff for years. I've read Crone's paper on "Hagarism" (proto-Islam) and a couple of others. I am intrigued and liked what she had to say. Unfortunately, her writing style is - shall we say - not user friendly. She was an academic, writing for other academics. She knew she was going to be nitpicked to death on every jot and tittle. (An appropriate allusion, given the subject here.) Robert Spencer has valid points but I don't trust his citations much and he has a tendency to rant, which makes me cautious of him. I've read his "Did Muhammad Exist?: An Inquiry into Islam’s Obscure Origins", both the 2012 and 2024 updated versions. (I just saw that he is also a blogger. That explains a few things.) I VERY much recommend "In God's Path: The Arab Conquests and the Creation of the Islamic Empire" by Robert G. Hoyland, Oxford University Press, 2015. It doesn't discuss the development of Islam, per se, but it's in there. Hoyland has a very readable writing style, logical organization and maps that you can read. I also recommend "In the Shadow of the Sword: The Birth of Islam and the Rise of Global Arab Empire" by Tom Holland, Anchor Books (Random House), 2012. He does get into the development of Islam, pretty much covering all the major religions in the area at the time AND their various sects, divisions, off-shoots, etc. It is readable, but his complicated subject and the amount of information makes it hard to present it in a straightforward way. Stick with it. All of the above available through Amazon.com. However, Crone's "Hagarism" costs $350 in paperback and almost $2000 in hardback. (I have an obscure digital copy of her paper, not in book form.)

I've read the Quran many times, in many translations, and also the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad. Nothing in this speculative essay strikes me as remotely on the mark with respect to the likely truth.

REP. JAMIE RASKIN: Well, the Department of Justice traditionally has enjoyed institutional independence from the office of the president. The president has not ordered investigations into specific individuals or terminated investigations into others. That principle was, of course, tested during Donald Trump’s first presidential administration. He seemed to want to treat the Department of Justice as a mere adjunct of his own presidency, under the unitary executive theory.

George Orwell, that idealistic socialist disillusioned by the Soviet “Workers’ Paradise” (what the great Ronald Reagan called the Evil Empire), took special note of how communists perverted language. Famous, in 1984, the motto was “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength.” In our time, as well, our speech is polluted by words that do not speak the truth but cover it up. Here are some of them.

The proverbial shoe is now on the other foot. While Kamala has conceded defeat to President Trump and Democrat politicians have remained relatively silent in these calls, constituents have had a different sentiment and have taken to social media to insist something is amiss.

First, let’s state the obvious… of course, Trump won in 2020...So, at first glance, this looks like -- and felt like -- a significant loss for the right and conservatism...But was it?

New polling numbers out of the states of Ohio and Wisconsin are very good news for Mitch McConnell and very bad news for Chuck Schumer. Panic seems to be setting in for Democrats as they see their chances of retaining control of the Senate slip from their grasp. In Ohio, Democrat incumbent Sherrod Brown is consistently polling behind his Republican rival, Bernie Moreno. RedState reported last week on polling from RMG Research that showed Moreno ahead of Brown by a 48 percent to 46 percent margin. New polling out from ActiVote confirms Moreno's lead, with the new data having Moreno sitting at 51.1 percent while Brown is at 48.9 percent.

I've been writing for months now in quick-hit Instapundit items that this country has been in a jobs recession since the COVID lockdowns and, thanks to Bidenomics, never recovered from. For some Republicans, the president’s decision not to seek a second term isn’t enough: They want him to resign, too. That’s tough to take seriously. When President Joe Biden announced that he was ending his re-election bid, he specifically referenced his eagerness to do the job he was elected to do for the next six months. “I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” the Democratic incumbent said in a written statement.

Honduran President Xiomara Castro has threatened to terminate military cooperation with the United States if President-elect Donald Trump proceeds with his plan for mass deportations of illegal immigrants, including those from Honduras. This ultimatum underscores the glaring hypocrisy of a leader who has failed to address the root causes driving her own citizens to flee her country in the first place. A primary objective of Trump’s mass deportation plan is to remove individuals with criminal records who are residing in the country illegally.

During a recent rant on his little-watched program, O’Donnell singled out U.S. veterans, specifically from the Army, as a greater terror threat than the people illegally crossing the southern border. A former CIA officer recently said that more than a thousand al-Qaeda operatives have likely crossed the open border and are now in the United States just waiting to strike but apparently, O’Donnell hasn’t heard that report. You can smell it in the air. A deep sense of betrayal among Democratic voters. An underlying realization that the Democratic party’s politburo — Obama, Pelosi, Schumer, Jeffries, and their courtiers of elected official and consultant sycophants — sold voters a bill of goods: the gaslighting of the public on President Biden’s decrepitude; the false idol of the Kamala Harris “campaign of joy” as a smart last-minute stand-in; and the repeated cowering to the far left whose wokeness and moral condescension turns off most voters. In a just world, one might expect a formal no-confidence vote on this leadership failure.

President-elect Donald J. Trump will be sentenced on January 10, but there will be no jail time, not that was ever a concern. The laws and statutes got so contorted that even CNN’s Elie Honig, the network's chief legal analyst and former assistant US attorney, couldn’t defend it, aptly calling it a total disaster of a case.
