GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz resigned from the House Wednesday, Speaker Mike Johnson announced, the same day that Donald Trump announced that he had tapped the Florida firebrand to be his attorney general. “He issued his resignation letter effective immediately from Congress. That caught us by surprise a little bit,” Johnson told reporters during a press conference on Wednesday night. Dozens of GOP lawmakers indicated that leadership had told them about Gaetz’s resignation before Johnson made the announcement. Many were excitedly spreading the news, glad to be rid of the architect of Kevin McCarthy’s speakership ouster. Gaetz didn’t attend the GOP’s

We need Thune to agree to putting Congress in recess so Trump can make his appointments.

It only takes 51 to confirm a nominee. Republicans have 53 Senators and the VP. It is nonsense that Gaetz will not be confirmed, and the ethics charges are also political warfare nonsense. Trump will install Gaetz with a recess appointment, until confirmed. Thune had better get that done, or Thune will be done. And once again, thank you forever, Matt Gaetz, for ridding us of Kevin McCarthy. If some members of the House don't like it, please let us know, so we can arrange a primary challenger.

House members have to be replaced by an election and not an appointment.
Resigning now allows Gov DeSantis to call a special election which can get a new member seated as soon as possible in the new Congress, possibly at its start on Jan 3.

Seems to me that by resigning now they can have a replacement in place by Jan but of course I think for myself and know that the media is nothing but lies, if they report, it isn't true.

I don’t think he’s qualified and I really doubt that he will be confirmed. I don’t think I would have resigned my seat so quickly. Along the same lines, Pets Hegseth isn’t qualified either. Being a cheerleader for vets doesn’t qualify you to run the Department of Defense. He will be seriously in over his head. Neither is Kristi Noem. Terrible choice. Alas, Trump is making the same mistakes he made the first time.

Recess appointments can take time - there is no time to waste. They also come with a time limit, so no. Gaetz is not a good choice.

Rep. Gaetz wasn’t born yesterday and Trump team and he prepared and strategized for the what ifs of the confirmation process. They are well aware some could use tidbits in the “report” to torpedo the nomination. From tweets I am reading from those in the know, Gaetz is so getting confirmed.

#7, I would welcome your thoughts on why Pete Hegseth is “not qualified.”

Not qualified? LOL. Looking at the last dozen AGs means ANY lawyer who isn't compromised by the Deep State is super ' qualified. ' TV news readers are not a good source of information.

Yes, #5. Gaetz represents my home town. Though I haven’t lived there for over 40 years, I still have in-laws there and it’s a very conservative area which is surrounded by military bases. I have no fear that Gaetz’ seat will be won by a demonicrat.
