How Mercedes' 'inexcusable' DQ cost Russell
F1 win in Spa

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium --When small margins decide Formula One races, it's usually measured by tenths of a second at the finish line. That appeared to be the case at Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix, when a jubilant George Russell led Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton across the line by 0.526 seconds. Two hours later, however, a similarly small margin, albeit measured in kilograms, had cost him the very same victory.

Comments:

Kinda technical and arcane but rules is rules. A great drive by George nonetheless.

Too bad. Saw the race this morning. Not the driver's fault. Wonder if a weight fell out of the car or does that not happen in F1.

In the old days there was a weigh in before the races, but not after, and streaks of sand, or even lead shot was found trackside where it had been jettisoned during the race from hidden compartments, or with trap doors from inside roll cages.

At least a small part of society has rules, and enforces them. Maybe I’ll start following F1. Can’t watch Olympics or college/paraprofessional football. Thanks for posting. A nice diversion.

For sake of the greens to save fuel and the environment they should lower the weight a little.

What do you suppose is the weight of rubber missing from four worn tires?

Some suggest that may be, #5. George's extra long last stint was heroic but yeah, tires wear. The car passed spec for qualy and parc ferme but underweight for the race? With Spa so long, no cool down lap when extra rubber - marbles - is normally picked up by hot tires. So as it is, an historic and very sad DQ. Merc sent to car to scrutineering at legal weight but with extra fuel that should have been emptied. Fingers wait to be pointed, a clumsy mistake or an attempt to deceive?

I'm sorry for being so out of the loop, but does the fact that this guy stopped at Dairy Queen means he loses the race?

Frankly, while I was impressed by Russell's ability to run fast and keep his hard compound tires working for that long, I was actually expecting some of the cars to be DQed because of 'plank wear', running the car set too low. Some of his lower tire wear was due to lower weight of the car, too. It turns out an illegally low weight. But during the early stage of the race the two Mercedes drivers were told via radio to begin to "lift and coast", meaning getting off the throttle early and coast a bit before hitting the brakes for corners. This is to save fuel. Why save fuel in a race??? Because the car is literally TOO LIGHT to meet the regulations with no fuel in the car. This is INTENTIONAL by the team, as they intend to have enough remaining fuel to meet the minimum weight rule. The cars are only checked for weight AFTER the race. Some teams plan on there being a crash which leads to a Safety Car being sent out and a few laps at slow speed while the wreck is removed from the track. Without a Safety Car, full power running the whole time uses more fuel. Fuel is weight. Weight is slowness. Mercedes knew that in four of the last five races at this track there had been a Safety Car. The team bet that there would be a Safety Car this race......and lost the bet. And their "lift and coast" wasn't enough to make up the difference in the fuel that they shorted Russell. Apparently the other Mercedes, Hamilton, did more effective 'lift and coast' and did save enough fuel. 1.5 kg of fuel is right at half a gallon of fuel. The cars are only permitted to have a maximum of 110 kg (~28 gallons) of fuel, and the teams often put in even less because this makes the car faster. They are cutting EVERY corner that they can to go faster. They cut this one too close. One old rule of thumb is 0.3 sec/lap gain for 10 kg weight reduction. Spa is a longer than usual lap, so probably around 0.4 sec per lap for 10 kg less weight. 1.5 kg less weight should be around 0.06 second per lap. Over a 44 lap race, this is 2.6 seconds. This margin would have put Russell into second or third at the end, IIRC what the final spacing was. Second place was about 1 second behind and third about 1 more second.

Re #1. Not likely. If a part is missing from accident damage, that is considered. No accident damage to Russell's car. The extra wear on tires because Russell ran them far longer than anyone thought possible....possible weight loss. The lack of "pickup"....yes, this is real, but they knew that no cooldown lap at Spa is the norm, so no pickup would be happening.

President Joe Biden called for major changes to the Supreme Court on Monday, including a constitutional amendment that would limit immunity for presidents, impose term limits for justices and stipulate an enforceable code of ethicst. In an op-ed in the Washington Post, Biden said "no one is above the law." “Not the president of the United States,” he wrote. “Not a justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. No one.” In July, the Supreme Court ruled that presidents cannot be prosecuted for "official acts" during their time in office. The court's ruling stemmed from a case concerning former President Donald Trump.

The “public servants” in Washington D.C. act like our masters. And it’s an open secret that not only are many members of Congress horrible bosses, the more ‘officially oppressed’ Congressmembers (and some of the most socialist ones like Sen. Bernie Sanders) are the absolutely worst and nastiest bosses. [SNIP] Harris vocally throws around “F-bombs” and other profanity constantly in her berating of staff and others. The staff is in complete fear of her and she uses her profanity throughout the day. As Attorney General, Senator Harris instructed her entire staff to stand every morning as she entered the office and say, “Good Morning General.”

Yes, you read that right. According to the website Michigan News Source, the group Republican Voters Against Trump is rolling out a campaign featuring disgruntled GOP voters who are standing with Kamala Harris this election. "Fiddlesticks," say you? Watch the ad below, says I. [Video] In addition to the ad above, Michigan News Source said the PAC had started a $500,000 billboard campaign in several swing states. The campaign is aimed at getting Trump voters to switch sides (and presumably sell their souls) and join Team Harris. The campaign includes 76 billboards showing alleged former Trump voters from Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin with the message:

Twenty-six years ago, a young man named Matthew Shepard was beaten and strung up on a Wyoming barbed wire fence to die. The beating and murder were because Shepard was gay. The perps were quickly found, tried for murder, convicted, and sentenced to prison. They’re still there. It was a good news story about bad news and was widely reported. But it wasn’t true. It has since been shown that Shepard and one of the perps were in the drug business together. Shepard was due to receive a $10,000 shipment of meth. The perp himself was gay and had been in a gay relationship with Shepard.

President Biden formally unveiled his planned overhaul of the Supreme Court on Monday — with a clear eye on limiting the powers of former President Donald Trump should he succeed him. The commander-in-chief took the unusual step of unveiling his major planned policy steps in a newspaper op-ed, with the Washington Post helpfully telling readers: “The writer is president of the United States.” The president laid out three main changes to the court — which he said is “mired in a crisis of ethics” — including term limits and a binding code of conduct.

What kind of president would Kamala Harris be if she were in office and another 9/11 struck? According to reporter Seymour Hersh, probably a pretty surprised one. She doesn't read her daily presidential intelligence briefings, because, well, that's "homework." Kamala doesn't do homework, as previous reports have noted. [snip] Kamala would be the nominee if she could perform, and here was Obama's concern: "One possible drawback, I was told, was Harris’s sometime disdain for the work of the US Intelligence Community. The New York Times reports that Vice President Kamala Harris’s advocacy for far-left policies on the 2019 campaign trail could imperil her 2024 bid for the Oval Office. Just days into her candidacy — after President Joe Biden was reportedly forced out as the presumptive Democrat nominee amid a behind-the-scenes pressure campaign from top Democrats, donors, and Hollywood elites — Republicans have shown they are ready for Harris’s candidacy. As Times reporter Reid Epstein noted Monday, several videos and policy visions that Harris, who has been an elected official since 2004, espoused in her last bid for the presidency have already come back to “haunt” her.

CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela’s opposition claimed victory in Sunday’s presidential election, setting up a showdown with the government, which earlier declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner. “The Venezuelans and the entire world know what happened,” opposition candidate Edmundo González said in his first remarks. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said the margin of González’s victory was “overwhelming” based on voting tallies it had received from campaign representatives from about 40% of ballot boxes nationwide. The National Electoral Council, which is controlled by Maduro loyalists, earlier said Maduro had secured 51% of the vote to 44% for González. But it didn’t release the tallies from each of the 30,000 polling booths nationwide,
