CARACAS, Venezuela — Venezuela’s opposition claimed victory in Sunday’s presidential election, setting up a showdown with the government, which earlier declared President Nicolás Maduro the winner. “The Venezuelans and the entire world know what happened,” opposition candidate Edmundo González said in his first remarks. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said the margin of González’s victory was “overwhelming” based on voting tallies it had received from campaign representatives from about 40% of ballot boxes nationwide. The National Electoral Council, which is controlled by Maduro loyalists, earlier said Maduro had secured 51% of the vote to 44% for González. But it didn’t release the tallies from each of the 30,000 polling booths nationwide,

It has been almost three weeks since Vice President Kamala Harris launched her presidential campaign after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. She still has not held a press conference.
Of course, this isn’t to say Harris’ presence has not been felt on the political stage. She has been traveling to swing states and holding rallies to gin up support for her campaign.
The vice president recently made waves on Tuesday by announcing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate. Yet, Harris appears to be avoiding interactions with the press at all costs.
Kamala Harris became visibly angry on Wednesday when her rally in Detroit was interrupted by pro-Hamas protesters. Members of the group "Uncommitted" began shouting multiple times, leading to Harris scowling and chastizing them as wanting Donald Trump to win the election. It was an awkward moment for a candidate who has remained completely insulated and free of any adversarial confrontations since she became the presumptive nominee. Her supporters quickly sought to spin the exchange as an example of her toughness, claiming she demonstrated what a tough woman who takes charge looks like. There's always more to the story, though.

I argued with anyone who said that, just because "President" Biden had chosen not to run for re-election, he was therefore unfit to serve out his term as president and needed to step down at once. My argument was that it's perfectly possible for an 82-year-old to be a fit leader for another five months while also acknowledging that another four and a half years would be too much. And I stand by that argument because it was always hypothetical; it could be true for any 82-year-old.
