WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden warned Sunday of the the risks of political violence in the U.S. after Saturday’s attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, saying, “It’s time to cool it down.”
In a prime-time national address from the Oval Office, Biden said political passions can run high but “we must never descend into violence.”
“There is no place in America for this kind of violence — for any violence. Ever. Period. No exception. We can’t allow this violence to be normalized,” Biden said.
Biden spoke for about five minutes from the Oval Office. He noted that the Republican National Convention was opening in Milwaukee on Monday,

Stick a fork in Joe Biden. He's done.
After the recent turmoil his party went through after the debate, which significantly damaged his candidacy and prompted calls for him to drop out, Democratic strategists who spoke with NBC News on Sunday say that now the failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump most certainly was the true end of his hopes of getting reelected.
"We're so beyond f---ed," lamented a longtime Democratic insider, emphasizing that the image of Trump thrusting his fist in the air, blood dramatically smeared across his face, will be an unforgettable image between now and Election Day.

There's going to be an investigation into the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. There are already big questions about how a shooter was able to get up on a roof within reach of the president, when all the roofs should have been checked out and secured.
Trump was shot in the ear, rally attendee Corey Comperatore was killed after he bravely shielded his wife and daughter from the bullets, and two others were critically injured. (Happily, those two people are now reportedly in stable condition.)
We reported how people were warning about the "guy on the roof" before he fired any shots. There was this upset witness,

The bullet came within inches, maybe millimeters, of Trump’s cranium. Instead, the would-be sniper caught Trump's ear, leaving the former president bleeding profusely, pumping his fist as the Secret Service whisked him to safety.
Israeli Special Operations veteran Aaron Cohen said that it was but one tiny movement that saved Trump’s life:
Hours after the incident, Cohen told Fox News' Trace Gallagher that, if the former president had not turned his head when the shot was fired, he would not have survived.
"God must have been watching down on the president," he said.
"Snipers are typically trained to shoot into the cerebral cortex

The FBI says that the attempt to shoot Donald Trump is being investigated as a potential act of domestic terrorism, adding that the shooter acted alone and had no known ideology.
“We are investigating this as an assassination attempt, but also looking at it as a potential domestic terrorism act,” Robert Wells, assistant director of the FBI counterterrorism division, tells reporters.
The gun used in the attempted assassination was an “AR-style 556 rifle” that was purchased legally, FBI Special Agent Kevin Rojek tells reporters.

Joe Biden was scheduled to give an update on the attempted assassination of Donald Trump on Sunday, but he kept the nation waiting, as has become his pattern. He showed up nearly an hour late to deliver just a few minutes of remarks before exiting the room without taking questions.
The president opened by denouncing all violence, saying there is "no place" for it in America. Biden then quickly dove into urging caution about assuming a motive. Nothing is more mind-numbing than when government officials play dumb about a motive because the truth is politically inconvenient. A man did not try to shoot Trump in the head

Dominic wrote on the long list of failures by the U.S. Secret Service over recent decades, but when it comes to the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, one question in particular rises above them all: How did they allow a shooter to get on a roof that was in striking distance of Trump?
There are other questions that have been raised. Why did the counter-sniper team appear to wait until the shooter fired at Trump before taking him out? Why didn’t police and Secret Service react more quickly to numerous people who were shouting at them for minutes that a gunman was crawling on a nearby roof? Why

Explosives were found in the car of would-be Trump assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks after he was killed in a failed attack on the former president during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, according to multiple reports.
Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania was identified by the FBI as the man responsible for shooting Trump and numerous rally attendees in Butler, Pa. The shooter’s car was parked near Trump’s rally, and police dispatched bomb technicians after receiving multiple reports of suspicious packages, the Wall Street Journal first reported.

Former First Lady Melania Trump, in her first remarks since the assassination attempt on the life of her husband, Donald Trump, said that “the fabric of our gentle nation is tattered,” while she called for a more humane approach to political discourse that has gotten increasingly toxic.
“We have always been a unique nation,” Trump wrote in a message posted on her X/Twitter account. “America, the fabric of our gentle nation is tattered, but our courage and common sense must ascend and bring us back together as one.” She wrote that “when I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life, and Barron’s life,

The nation escaped an unspeakable tragedy that would have been profoundly destabilizing for the country by perhaps a few centimeters.
As it is, what happened in Butler, Pa., is godawful enough. A gunman tried to assassinate former president Donald Trump and grazed his ear with a bullet, while killing one rally-goer and seriously injuring others. This was a heinous act of violence and an attack on American democracy.
Trump’s reaction was truly extraordinary and will long be remembered. After Secret Service officers threw themselves on the former president and then picked him up to begin to take him to safety, he insisted on pausing on the stage

The gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump Saturday was identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, sources told The Post.
Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pa., squeezed off shots — one of which grazed Trump in the ear — at an outdoor rally in Butler, just outside Pittsburgh.
Sources said Crooks was planted on a roof of a manufacturing plant more than 130 yards away from the stage at Butler Farm Show grounds. He was killed by Secret Service snipers. An AR-style rifle was later recovered.
Bethel Park is a village 40 miles south of where the Butler rally was held.
Why Crooks fired on the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is unclear.

How do I know that the reports over Democrat despair are credible? This one comes from Politico, but the New York Times has covered it wall-to-wall for the past two weeks as well. This isn't just conservative schadenfreude, but a real phenomenon unfolding on and being reported by the Left.
Before we get to Politico's more explicit report, we can certainly extrapolate establishment Democrat despair from this NYT report about Joe Biden's appearance in Michigan. He drew a crowd, but not any other high-ranking Democrat officeholder:
Conspicuously absent, however, were many of Michigan’s highest-profile Democrats, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, whose popularity
