HWASEONG, South Korea — A lithium battery factory in South Korea was set on fire after multiple batteries exploded on Monday, killing 22 workers, most of them Chinese nationals, fire officials said. The fire and a series of explosions ripped through the factory run by primary battery manufacturer Aricell in Hwaseong, an industrial cluster southwest of the capital Seoul. The victims likely succumbed to extremely toxic gas within seconds of the blaze getting out of control, the officials said. It was unclear what caused the explosions and the fire was largely extinguished in about six hours.

Comments:

FTA: "It was unclear what caused the explosions" DUH! It was the hypervolatile lithium batteries! But - - the AssPress skipped a chance to write this headline - - "Hottest Fire - - EVER!"

Lithium batteries are a very dangerous technology, and while they offer better range performance in EVs than other batteries, they really are a serious problem. The 'grid scale' storage unit being built in San Diego caught fire, as large numbers of lithium batteries all too frequently do, and last I heard it was still burning 10 days after it started, impossible to extinguish. Answering #1's query......they set themselves on fire. Spontaneous combustion of a tiny quarter-sized lithium 2032 battery set a friend's garage on fire, nearly burning her home down. Fortunately it was a tiny, tiny battery and firemen were summoned by a passerby fairly early. That was six months ago and she just last week finally got the garage rebuild finished. Even those tiny 'coin' cell lithium batteries are dangerous. She had collected batteries for recycling in a bag in the garage, and the fireman told her what the cause was, and said that they see it repeatedly with those lithium coin batteries.

Maxim: "If it can store energy for rapid release, it can and will release it even faster than desired given a chance." Apply that maxim to ANY situation you wish, whether it's solid rocket fuel, gasoline, hydrogen, or lithium.

If the Lamestreams covered EV's and lithium batteries the way they cover aviation and the space program -that is, anything that reflects negatively makes the front-page national news- we would see an endless stream of stories about "those dangerous lithium batteries". But EV's fit into their Anthropogenic Climate Disruption political power grab scam, so most of these fires only make the local news, if even that. I have a neighbor who bought an economy-line battery drill. He charged the batteries and placed them on his workbench (which reportedly had flammable solvents in closed metal containers nearby) in his hangar. Next morning we were awakened to several fire trucks trying to extinguish his hangar, which was completely engulfed in flames, destroying his Piper Warrior, a show-quality custom-built plane, a couple of classic cars, and about a dozen antique motorcycles. The only change in the arrangements in the last several months was his purchase of that battery-powered drill.

Re #4. Yes, precisely so. An example of the truth of that statement in an ENTIRELY different sort of energy storage system. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taum_Sauk_Hydroelectric_Power_Station Fortunately, there were no tourists on the river that day, deaths would have resulted. It was a December Wednesday, so the area was empty. On a summer day, the Johnson Shut Ins State Park which was basically destroyed by the flood, could have had dozens or even a hundred people out enjoying the rock formations in the normally very shallow river. ANY and ALL energy storage systems can, occasionally, give all that stored energy back in an uncontrolled fashion. And a coin sized lithium battery can burn your house down.

Surrounded by dozens of teachers-union officials on the steps of the Pennsylvania state Capitol this month, Democratic state Sen. Lindsey Williams excoriated a proposed K-12 education-voucher program. She called it a conspiracy by racist, religious fundamentalists bent on destroying public education by driving “straight, white, able-bodied kids into private religious schools.” The next day, a group of black religious leaders gathered in the state Capitol to tell Gov. Josh Shapiro to support the voucher program, called the Pennsylvania Award for Student Success. A newly promoted Biden administration official has come under fire over old social media posts that compared police to “slave patriots” and celebrated the anti-Israel movement. Department of Interior worker Tyler Cherry’s incendiary tweets began to re-emerge shortly after he was promoted last week to join the White House communications team. Cherry, who spent three years working under Secretary of the Inferior Deb Haaland, wrote in 2015 amid the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who died in police custody, “Praying for #Baltimore, but praying even harder for an end to a capitalistic police state motivated by explicit and implicit racial biases.”

CNN abruptly cut Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt from the air Monday morning — just days before the network is set to host the first presidential debate between her boss and President Joe Biden. Anchor Kasie Hunt pulled the plug just minutes after the interview got underway after asking Leavitt what former President Donald Trump’s strategy was for when he takes to the stage in Atlanta, Ga. on Thursday. “President Trump is well prepared ahead of Thursday’s debates. Unlike Joe Biden, he doesn’t have to hide away and have his advisors tell him what to say. President Trump knows what he wants to say,” Leavitt started.

Millions just witnessed the end of a presidency live on television. Joe Biden’s performance during the debate was embarrassing. Whenever CNN put him up on the split screen, he had a thousand-yard stare. He didn’t look old. He looked ancient. He looked empty. But at least he wasn’t speaking. Because when it was his time to answer, Biden was incoherent. He said he “beat Medicaid.” (Photo) Asked about abortion, he randomly started talking about migrant crime. “I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence,” former President Trump noted at one point, “and I don’t think he knows what he said either.” At one point Biden just froze.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) told reporters in the spin room Thursday night in Atlanta after the first presidential debate of the 2024 general election on CNN that President Biden won the debate on the “substance.” Newsom and Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) were sent into a phalanx of reporters as the Biden campaign’s surrogates with a seemingly impossible mission: spin a debate that even MSNBC thought Biden lost as a win for the incumbent. “To me, that was daylight and darkness … I care about substance,” Newsom said. “This is not about style … Biden not only asserted himself, he reminded people of his accomplishments and his vision for the future.”
