When Contempt Is Necessary

~The eminent barrister (and later Lord Chancellor) F E Smith was famously asked by an irritated judge: "Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?" To which he replied: "No, my Lord, I am trying to conceal it." If you have a corrupt revenue agency, corrupt law enforcement and corrupt courts, what else do you need? Much of America is institutionally evil, and so-called conservative media are just stringing along for the ride.

Comments:

Mark Steyn dissects the outrageous "hush money" case in Manhattan but more broadly delivers a guilty verdict on America's so-called justice system. As an aside he advises Trump to attend Barron's graduation no matter what.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said recent earthquakes and a coming eclipse are “strong signs” from God that America needs to “repent,” shortly after tremors shook the New York City region Friday. “God is sending America strong signs to tell us to repent. Earthquakes and eclipses and many more things to come. I pray that our country listens,” Greene said Friday in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Following The Mark Steyn Caribbean Cruise, I am now on terra firma - as are Trump's poll numbers, to a degree not seen either in 2020 or 2016. On the other hand, given the Deep State thumb on the scale in both 2016 ("Crossfire Hurricane") and 2020 (fifty-seven heads of the "intelligence community" assure us that Hunter Biden's laptop is "Russian disinformation"), no prudent person would bet on a free and fair election in November - especially after yesterday's Supreme Court intervention. As I always say: There's no point having the greatest constitution in the world if you've got the crappiest election system in the world.

Most coverage of Friday's verdict from a Manhattan courthouse has focused on the $350 million plus that rogue judge Arthur F Engoron has demanded Trump cough up - for a "crime" which has no known victims and no identifiable proceeds. Confiscating (with interest) close to half-a-billion dollars for no good reason is certainly unusual, even by the standards of US "justice".

So a German couple decide to travel to Paris for a pre-Christmas break. The City of Light and all that, right? Don't worry, they didn't go to any of those dangerous banlieues. Instead, they were a few yards from the Eiffel Tower strolling the Quai de Grenelle when a man attacked them shouting - go on, take a wild guess - yes, "Allahu akbar!"

In our initial report on this new war yesterday, we published a video showing a terrified young lady being abducted by Hamas "soldiers" from an Israeli music festival. She was delivered to Gaza. This is the condition she arrived in: "Allahu Akbar!" Because Allah is truly great, isn't he? He let us target the Jewess, and then strip her and beat her and rape her. And then, when we drive what's left to the dar al-Islam, we all get to dance in the streets and desecrate her corpse. Boy, what a generous guy that Allah is!

Students across France returned to school on Monday amid ongoing tensions between the federal government and Muslims over a recent decision to bar girls in public schools from wearing abayas, loose-fitting cloak-like garments that cover every part of the body except the face. Of the nearly 12 million students across the country, nearly 300 girls wore the long Islamic garment and were asked to change into something else. The vast majority complied and were allowed to return to class, however, 67 did not and were subsequently sent home.

I was listening to John Derbyshire's long-running Radio Derb the other day, and was rather touched to find myself with a bit part in the opening segment: I'll come back to the bit Derb referenced later in the week, but first, to return the compliment, I was very struck by an aside he had about halfway through the show re India becoming the fourth nation to make a "soft landing" on the moon (by "soft", they mean the spacecraft doesn't get totaled on impact). The cost of the Chandrayaan-3 mission was about US$75 million, which, as John pointed out, is less than the cost of the Barbie movie.

The Utah Senate race between conservative Republican Sen. Mike Lee and Independent Evan McMullin has emerged as a potential wild card in the battle for the Senate. Recent polls show the race is close, with McMullin trailing Lee by only a few points in a state where Republican victories are usually all but guaranteed. Lee, a conservative who supported then-President Trump’s effort to challenge the 2020 election results on Jan. 6, is a star among many members of Utah’s Republican base, but his unpopularity among moderates and Democrats has driven his approval rating down to the low 40s.

The rage-filled youngster, identified only as a minor, confronted the educator inside Parkland High School in Winston-Salem, where he violently attacked her, according to video posted to social media. After the initial impact, the teacher seemed unfazed by the slap as the student continued to run his mouth. Do you think that affected me anyway,” the unidentified teacher said, sitting back in her chair, legs crossed. “Want me to hit you again,” the juvenile asked as he menacingly approached the teacher.

A federal appeals court on Tuesday overturned a West Virginia law that prohibits male athletes from competing in women’s sports in the state, arguing that it violates Title IX, the federal law barring sex-based discrimination in schools. In a 2-1 ruling, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals allowed transgender-identifying males to participate on women’s sports teams in the state. This was one of several pending lawsuits addressing the issue of male participation in women’s sports, with both sides laying claim to Title IX to support their cases. The Senate moved Wednesday to put a premature end to the impeachment trial of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, which would make him the second Cabinet official in history to evade a conviction and removal from office — but the first to be acquitted without evidence being presented of his alleged “high crimes and misdemeanors.” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) convened the upper chamber in the early afternoon to swear in the 51 Democrats or independents who caucus with them and 49 Republicans as jurors, before offering a motion to dismiss the first of the charges without a trial. The unprecedented move set off a series of objections from Republicans,

Soon the government might shut down your car. President Joe Biden's new infrastructure gives bureaucrats that power. You probably didn't hear about that because when media covered it, few mentioned the requirement that by 2026, every American car must "monitor" the driver, determine if he is impaired and, if so, "limit vehicle operation." Rep. Thomas Massie objected, complaining that the law makes government "judge, jury and executioner on such a fundamental right!" Congress approved the law anyway. A USA Today "fact check" told readers, don't worry, "There's no kill switch in Biden's bill." (Snip) The clause is buried under Section 24220 of the law.

It's hard to blame Donald Trump (aka Dozy Don) for apparently nodding off during the first day of his 'hush money' trial in New York on Monday. Yes, it's the first ever criminal trial of a former U.S. president and he's also the only leading presidential candidate ever to face criminal proceedings. Add to that the chance he could go to jail if he's found guilty and you might expect Trump to be paying close attention. But the early stages of the trial have been dominated by arcane legal arguments about procedural points and the interminable process of choosing a jury, now an unavoidable feature of American justice.

Following this, USAA, two months later, notified Eastman of the closure of his accounts with the company. USAA cited its Depository Agreement as the basis for its decision, citing its right to ”no longer do banking business” with customers.
