Consumers are increasingly pushing back
against price increases — and winning

Inflation has changed the way many Americans shop. Now, those changes in consumer habits are helping bring down inflation. Fed up with prices that remain about 19%, on average, above where they were before the pandemic, consumers are fighting back. In grocery stores, they're shifting away from name brands to store-brand items, switching to discount stores or simply buying fewer items like snacks or gourmet foods. More Americans are buying used cars, too, rather than new, forcing some dealers to provide discounts on new cars again.

Comments:

Many grocers have store label products that are on par with and often produced at the same factories as large corporate brands. eg Trader Joes.

What a load. We're getting less per package in exchange for prices not rising as much. APee strikes again.

People buying less and often getting lower quality (used vs new cars) is not fighting back. It's a survival mechanism.

The AP are extremely ignorant economists, as they celebrate the decline in the American standard of living, inevitable with $35T in debt, and growing $2T a year.

We've often found 'Best Choice' brand foods to be fine, at a much lower price.

I’m a 77-year-old retiree. Yesterday, I went to our local grocer to buy a nice big juicy steak to split between my wife and myself, for Sunday dinner. A pound of ribeye was $15/lb. I ended up buying two small cuts of shoulder steak for $5.66 total. Yeah sure. I fought back against high prices. If that was winning, it sure felt hollow. This article didn’t speak to me.

The trend is there but it's not mainstream yet. Most people except high school kids with allowances are avoiding fast food. New cars are priced so far out of sight that you couldn't get the loan if you wanted one. ($73K for a pickup truck, C'mon man.) The general rule in grocery stores is to avoid the pre-prepared meals and buy raw vegetables and meats. Some stores merely need to cover their cost increases and some are taking huge advantage and slowly driving customers away. They will pay a big price in lost customers when and if things become reasonable again. Stores that allow free-for-all shoplifting will continue to suffer as they attempt to cover losses. The biggest improvement will be seen when the insane energy restrictions are lifted.

Drill Baby, Drill would put a big dent in inflation since everything uses oil or gas in some way or another. Not only that but it's making our enemies like Iran filthy rich bandits since they haven't put restrictions on their oil pumping. Where is China buying oil now that the US has put restrictions on it? But this administration is all in for 'Climate Change'.

Alaska lawmaker’s bid to revive stalled
green energy policy defines coal as ‘clean’

Burning coal to make electricity generates significantly more carbon pollution than using natural gas for the same purpose. But a new bill drafted by Sutton Republican Rep. George Rauscher still seeks to define coal-generated electricity as “clean energy” — putting it on the same footing as wind, solar, tidal and hydroelectric power. The proposed legislation, House Bill 368, is Rauscher’s bid to advance an energy policy debate that has otherwise stalled at the Alaska Capitol. “There’s a reality to keeping the lights on and keeping everybody warm today,” Rauscher said. “As opposed to the vision of what we’re going to have in the future.”

A new hostage deal between Israel and Hamas could be in the works, war cabinet minister Benny Gantz declared on Monday, but if the sides fail to reach an agreement Israel will invade the southern Gaza city of Rafah over Ramadan. There are “initial signs that indicate the possibility of moving forward” on a new framework, Gantz told reporters during a press conference at IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv, pledging to “leave no stone unturned” in the effort to free those kidnapped on October 7. He did not offer further details, but unconfirmed reports in Arabic media Wednesday claimed Hamas had softened its position somewhat,

A federal judge in Orange County has dismissed criminal charges for the second time in five years against accused members of a Southern California white nationalist group suspected of inciting fights at political rallies across the state. US District Judge Cormac J. Carney on Wednesday dismissed charges against Robert Rundo — who was extradited from Romania last year — and Robert Bowman from Torrance. Rundo is accused of being a founding member of the Rise Above Movement, or RAM, a white supremacist group that describes itself as “a combat-ready, militant group of a new nationalist white supremacy and identity movement,”

Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet The Press” that President Joe Biden’s presidency has been a “masterclass” in how to run the United States. Anchor Kristen Welker said, “There are some pretty stark numbers you are facing. Seventy-six percent of voters say they have real concerns about President Biden’s ability to serve a second term. Do you think it is responsible for Democrats to put him at the top of the ticket given these concerns?” Newsom said, “I mean, what he’s done in three years, it’s been a masterclass. Close to 15 million jobs, that’s eight times more than the last three Republican presidents combined.

To the chorus of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' raucous '80s pop hit, "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley reached the podium on the 2024 Republican primary night in the state she calls home. The still-strong crowd of supporters began to chant her first name, to which Haley said with a note of affection on what must be a difficult night to remain upbeat, "Y'all are a rowdy bunch, but I love that about you." As we reported earlier, Haley lost the primary, in the state where she served as governor, to former President Donald Trump: Haley began her speech by thanking her family,

About 18 months ago, my colleague Fuzzy Slippers fisked The New York Times opinion piece for asserting there was a “time and place” for cannibalism. What new horrors do they have in store for us? Well, cannibalism, of course. What better way to feed the masses than to feed them the masses, presumably the “good” unwashed get to consume the “bad” ones.[Snip]Ethically, cannibalism poses fewer issues than you might imagine. If a body can be bequeathed with consent to medical science, why can’t it be left to feed the hungry? Our aversion has been explained in various ways.

John Kerry: “Agriculture contributes about 33% of all the emissions of the world. And we can’t get to Net Zero—we don’t get the job done—unless agriculture is front and center as part of the solution. You just can’t continue to both warm the planet while also expecting to feed it. It doesn’t work. So, we have to reduce emissions from the food system.” What a dilemma. If we feed people, we will continue to warm the planet. If we continue to warm the planet, billions will die in 100 years from global warming because of the food we are eating now.

Mary Poppins has had its age rating lifted from U to PG because it contains 'discriminatory language' - but the word in question is so obscure you may have never noticed it. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) now considers the 1964 tale of Julie Andrews' magical nanny to be not suitable for children to watch alone, despite the film enchanting generations of youngsters. The reclassification is due to the use of the word Hottentots. The dated term was historically used by Europeans to refer to the Khoekhoe, a group of nomadic herders in South Africa, but is now regarded as racially offensive.

Special Counsel Robert Hur could not determine who had access to Joe Biden’s stolen classified documents stored at Penn Biden Center because security deleted all the visitor logs from 2017-2021. According to Hur, Joe Biden kept more than 600 pages of classified documents in unlocked drawers/closets at the Penn Biden Center and stored some of them in dilapidated boxes in his Delaware garage and other unsecured locations. The FBI identified numerous folders, including many labeled “EYES ONLY VPOTUS” which contained highly classified material related to intelligence sources and methods.

First, California came for plastic straws. It did nothing meaningful for the environment, but it made lawmakers feel good — albeit at the expense of consumers. Now, the state could be coming for “single-use cups” at chain restaurants. It’ll do nothing for the environment, again, but it’ll make lawmakers feel good, again. Guess what it will do to your wallet, Californians? According to The Center Square, a conservative publication, Democrat Sen. Catherine Blakespear, who represents a district in the San Diego suburbs, has introduced Senate Bill 1167, which would require chain restaurants to stop using paper or plastic single-use beverage cups.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom thinks President Joe Biden should absolutely debate Donald Trump in the 2024 general election campaign. Biden has not yet committed to debate Trump this election cycle after the two went head-to-head multiple times in 2020. But Newsom, a top surrogate for Biden, suggested that the president is prepared to go against his predecessor and that suggestions he won't is 'pure projection.' Trump refused to participate in the primary debate this cycle because he claimed he was running as an incumbent and shouldn't have to go up against the B team.

A longtime Republican National Committee member, Henry Barbour, has introduced two resolutions for consideration by the RNC board that the Trump campaign opposes as "absurd." The first proposal would enforce the RNC by-laws that forbid the national committee from taking sides in a primary. The proposed resolution would explicitly prevent the RNC from coordinating with a campaign until one candidate has won 1215 delegates, which is the number needed for the nomination. "The Republican National Committee must serve as a neutral player in primaries," the proposal reads, pointing to RNC Rule 11. That rule states the national party shall not "contribute money or in-kind aid to any
