Who's Buying Up Small Newspapers in Rural Georgia?

Original Article

It used to be that local newspapers were essential for people in small towns to know what was going on. Community newspapers were where townsfolks went for local news coverage, often with a quirky, gossipy twist. Growing up, I'll always remember visiting my dad's family in the North Georgia mountains in a tiny town nestled on the border with Tennessee. Almost every time we were up there, the lead story in the little newspaper was a pot bust in the woods near some local resident's house, while a column called "Eva Dave's Coffee Break" dished on town gossip. But over time, local papers began to die.

Gannett Publishing bought the local paper in the town wherein I reside; What was once a left leaning newspaper, is now a "Yellow Rag"! I miss reading the paper; I read it cover to cover every day and loved the "Times" crossword. Unable to stomach the garbage it produced any further, I haven't read it at all in 17 years.

Just like the availability of cars and better roads spelled the death of local stores and churches, the availability of more information sources killed local papers. When people have a choice they will usually choose better quality or lower price. We have several local TV stations that I dont watch much. They spend most of the broadcast on local sports scores and weather that isn't as good as I can get off the net. Any meat is done in the first five minutes. And the loud car dealer commercials are horribly annoying.

Here in the Peeple's Republik of Konnektikut I occasionally subscribed online to the leftist Hartford Courant and my local leftist paper, The Norwich Bulletin. I got each of them in an introductory offer for $1 for 6 months. Then I would cancel just before the offer expired and defaulted to the retail price. I cancelled as usual about 5 months ago. But now both are giving me access for free! Obviously they need me for the clicks more than I need them.

About the same happened here after the Statewide and local newspapers were purchased by a big conglomerate in Virginia and other out of State interests. Those newspapers, especially the Statewide newspaper was transformed to what amounts to be a “progressive” newspaper in this long recognized Republican State.

Each year fewer people read newspapers. Nowadays people get their news from the internet, radio, or tv. I still listen to sports and music on radio but I gave up on radio for news after Rush crossed the Rainbow Bridge. I watch local news on tv for the weather report and who got shot. Today I have to hit the mute button dozens of times and both local and national news were dominated by the J6 nonsense. The neat thing about the internet is if you don't like what you're reading just close it and movie onto the next one.

Have always loved stopping over in small towns and reading their local paper. But so many of those are now just regurgitated USA Today articles.

CNN has come out with its first electoral map of the campaign season and the "Road to 270." The map is based on polling and other factors they detailed. And it is that path to 270 that we attempt to explore here. We base this current outlook on public and private polling, conversations with campaign advisers, Republican and Democratic political operatives, members of Congress, and political professionals involved with outside groups poised to be active in the race. First, let's start by saying how hilarious it is that they spent multiple paragraphs downplaying the map before they even started talking about it. Here's a small

A record low percentage of Americans are satisfied with the “way democracy is working” during Joe Biden’s presidency, a Gallup poll found. Only 28 percent of adults living in the United States — a constitutional republic — are satisfied with the state of democracy, down from 35 percent when Gallup polled on the issue after January 6, 2021, according to the poll. “The more recent declines of the past two years (to varying degrees for different partisan groups) may reflect economic unease amid higher prices, disapproval of the jobs President Joe Biden, Congress and the Supreme Court are doing, increasing hostility between the political parties, former President Donald Trump’s persistent political strength,

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced a deal Sunday on how much the U.S. government will spend in the new year, a significant step toward avoiding a shutdown. But while the agreement on a “topline” spending level breaks a logjam that had stalled the process, it doesn’t necessarily extinguish the shutdown threat as the first of two deadlines nears on Jan. 19, when some parts of the government will run out of money. “The bipartisan topline appropriations agreement clears the way for Congress to act over the next few weeks in order to maintain important funding priorities for the American people and

Eighty one percent of Democrats believe states should disqualify former president Donald Trump from presidential ballots, according to a new CBS News/YouGov poll. By contrast, 90 percent of Republicans believe states should keep Trump’s name on the ballot. Independents are more closely split: 44 percent believe states should remove Trump’s name from ballots, while 56 percent believe states should allow Trump’s name to remain on ballots. Both Colorado and Maine have disqualified Trump from their respective primary ballots because his actions in the wake of the 2020 election allegedly violated Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which forbids

There's a fascinating new report from the Washington Post about how worried Barack Obama is about Joe Biden's chances of winning in 2024. According to the report, Obama's first concern about the campaign is about the structure, that Biden's chief advisers are in Washington, D.C., while his campaign is in Wilmington, Delaware. Obama thinks the top people should either be in Wilmington or that the people there should be empowered to make campaign decisions, because as it is now, according to the report, they have to go through D.C. Obama believes that doesn't make for an agile, quick response campaign. While Obama hasn't recommended anyone to help the Biden team,

A year ago I was confidently predicting that neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump would be on the 2024 presidential election ballot. The Democrats would be crazy to nominate Biden, and the Republicans would be crazy to nominate Trump. And yet, with the caucus and primary season about to start, here we are. With no sign that the Democrats have a way to get Biden off the ballot, and with mainstream Republicans like Tom Emmer and Tom Cotton lining up behind Trump, we seem destined for an election that neither candidate can possibly win. Fetterman just eviscerated Harvard's failure to properly deal with antisemitism and he slammed the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. He said that he went to Harvard 25 years ago,

Ron DeSantis will drop out of the 2024 presidential race if he loses the Iowa caucuses to Donald Trump on January 15, it is claimed. Two well-acquainted sources within the DeSantis campaign, a significant donor and a high-ranking political operative, told The Hill that if the Florida Governor loses to former President Donald Trump on January 15, he is likely to withdraw from the race altogether. The announcement would either be made that same night or the following morning - - and with it a reluctant endorsement for Trump and the governor would not move on to New Hampshire, scheduled for January 23.

Pence, who was in the primary running until he dropped out in October, wants Republicans in Iowa and New Hampshire to caucus and vote for someone other than Trump.

The plight of broadcast TV prospects has been woeful for years already. Cord-cutting - while acknowledged and battled for some time - has actually accelerated in the past couple of years. The carriage dispute between Disney and Spectrum in the fall of 2023 reflected this, as the cable provider was not attempting to strongarm the entertainment giant; it simply could not afford any higher fees due to customer flight. With more people jumping to streaming, the four major networks have experienced a severe erosion, with the annual top series-- outside of sports programming--not able to average more than 10 million viewers per episode.

There isn’t much left in this regime to shock the consumer of news. We have grown accustomed to the daily cavalcade of assaults on American freedoms in the Federal Register; both the autocrat-in-chief and his press secretary have mainstreamed the practice of lying about virtually every issue. They attempt to take both sides of foreign policy issues within the same speech, claiming to be supporters of Israel while supporting Hamas, claiming to be opposed to the risk of nuclear war while encouraging Iranian nuclear advancement. What is left to shock us, in such an environment? Well, sometime Friday, January 5, the story developed that Lloyd Austin, the 70-year-old

William Penn may have founded the state of Pennsylvania but the iconic historic figure could soon find himself canceled by the leftist cultural revolution that has wormed its way into the highest corridors of government. The agency will be seeking input on the “rehabilitation” of Welcome Park, another of the authoritarian left’s Orwellian terms that mask its extremism,
