The following is an excerpt from River City One: A Novel (Knox Press; Nov. 7, 2023). I’m laughing now because I can still see him. He’s got his helmet on, the chinstrap dangling and tobacco spit coming off his lip. I tell you the right side of his face was blown up like a puffer fish. He kept himself grungy, so unclean that you’d think not even the bad guys would touch him. Maybe that’s why I liked him being nearby, because I thought it would keep me safe or something.

he U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a move to bring back federal workers who were fired by the Trump administration, handing a win to President Donald Trump as he works to downsize the government. Trump asked the high court to intervene after a lower court judge ordered the administration to reinstate thousands of probationary workers to their jobs after they were terminated earlier this year. Tuesday’s emergency ruling by the Supreme Court, presented to Justice Elena Kagan, is not final and is stayed pending the disposition of an appeal in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit.

President Donald Trump said on April 7 that the United States will be holding direct high-level talks with Iran. The talks will be held on April 12, the president said during his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. “I think everybody agrees that doing a deal would be preferable to doing the obvious,” Trump said in an apparent reference to possible military action against Iran.“And the obvious is not something that I want to be involved with or, frankly, that Israel wants to be involved with if they can avoid it,” he said. “So we’re going to see if we can avoid it.”

With a president like Donald Trump, who would have thought a vice president could add any more entertainment value or personality to his administration? Yet J.D. Vance is doing that very thing. Last weekend, Vance made a noteworthy trip to Greenland. He and Trump have been toying with adding the island to the great American melting pot. Yet the portion of the trip that received perhaps the most buzz didn’t come from serious talks of annexation. (snip) can be seen telling soldiers, “Please, at ease! Who decides what statutes say in Congress? The obvious answer is that Congress itself decides. But if Senate Republicans are not careful, they will set a new precedent to outsource this power to the Senate parliamentarian and the left-wing bureaucrats at the Government Accountability Office (GAO). At issue are the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) waivers Joe Biden granted to California under the Clean Air Act. As attorneys Michael Buschbacher and James Conde recently explained, these waivers wreak havoc on the domestic automotive and fossil-fuel industries, limiting consumer choice, hurting workers, and upending the Constitution by forcing 49 states to, in essence, do California’s environmentalist bidding.

The Trump administration will be allowed to resume deporting suspected Venezuelan gangbangers under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act after the Supreme Court on Monday lifted a lower court order that blocked the deportations. DC District Court Chief Judge James Boasberg had blocked President Trump from invoking the rarely used wartime law last month, and later extended his temporary restraining order until at least April 12. The Trump administration filed an emergency request with the Supreme Court to review Boasberg’s pause on March 28, after a divided three-judge panel on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a request to lift the stay as litigation plays out.

The last thing the Palestinians need are more calls from Qatar-based extremist for terrorism and jihad. The "scholars" leading the IUMS live safely in Qatar, not in the Gaza Strip, and they are therefore not directly affected by the war that Hamas launched.
