MEXICO CITY (AP) — The former mayor of Mexico City will be the dominant ruling party’s presidential candidate, moving the country closer to electing its first female president next year.
The decision driven by polls of Morena party members means that Claudia Sheinbaum will run as the party’s candidate in the June election. Mexico’s constitution bars outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador from a second six-year term.
Morena national council president Alfonso Durazo said Sheinbaum beat former Foreign Affairs Secretary Marcelo Ebrard by double figures in five party surveys.

The president’s son has been under federal investigation since 2018 for potential violations of tax and gun laws. In July, he was expected to plead guilty to charges related to failing to declare some income,

Donald Trump's argument that the 2020 election was rigged has reinforced the views of Americans who are already disenchanted about politics, one factor in their inclination not to cast a vote next year − that is, a vote they would probably cast for him.
An exclusive USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll of unlikely voters − those who are eligible to vote but say they probably won't − give Trump a lopsided edge over President Joe Biden among Americans who are deeply skeptical of politics and government. Registered voters who say they aren't likely to go to the polls back Trump over Biden by nearly 20 percentage points, 32%-13%, with 27% supporting

Austin, Texas— Texas must move a large floating barrier that Gov. Greg Abbott placed on the river between the U.S. and Mexico this summer as part of the Republican’s escalating attempts to stop migrants from crossing America’s southern border, a federal judge ruled Wednesday.
U.S. District Judge David Ezra stopped short of ordering Texas to dismantle the wrecking-ball sized buoys on the Rio Grande but called them a threat to safety and relationships between the neighboring countries. His preliminary injunction instructs Texas, for now, to move the barrier out of the water and onto the riverbank by Sept. 15.

By now everyone acknowledges that the federal government lies to Americans as a matter of course. It’s no longer just the so-called “conspiracy theorists” who think that. Anyone who’s been paying attention over the last couple of decades has come to that conclusion. After COVID, after the recession that wasn’t really a recession because they changed the definition of a recession, after the wars in Iraq and Syria and Afghanistan and Ukraine and so on — there’s no reasonable person left in this country who trusts the federal government on faith, and rightfully so.

On Wednesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “The Beat,” HBO host and comedian Bill Maher stated that while there is no Trump-Biden equivalency, the Hunter Biden scandal “stinks to the high heavens. That’s real corruption there, that a lot of the left-wing media will not cover.” And stated that there would be a much different reaction if Donald Trump Jr. had done what Hunter Biden has.
Maher said, “I don’t understand how they can equate this equivalency between Trump and Biden. … Do I love everything about Biden? No. But I just don’t understand how they can look at what Trump did — now, does the Hunter Biden scandal stink? It really does.

Scientists have grown an entity that closely resembles an early human embryo, without using sperm, eggs or a womb.
The Weizmann Institute team say their "embryo model", made using stem cells, looks like a textbook example of a real 14-day-old embryo. It even released hormones that turned a pregnancy test positive in the lab.The ambition for embryo models is to provide an ethical way of understanding the earliest moments of our lives.
The first weeks after a sperm fertilises an egg is a period of dramatic change - from a collection of indistinct cells to something that eventually becomes recognisable on a baby scan.

t was February of 1992 and President George H. W. Bush, while out campaigning for reelection, gave a speech to the National Grocers Association. What could possibly go wrong? It was a non-event, evidenced by the fact that only one pool reporter was present, Gregg McDonald of the Houston Chronicle. Before Bush gave the speech, he toured the new grocer technology, including a state-of-the-art scanner that could weigh produce and read damaged bar codes. In his report, McDonald noted that the president had a "look of wonder" on his face as he admired the new technology.

Does Karine Jean-Pierre think you are stupid? In his sharpest language to date against the Trump wing of the GOP, Pence said that the populists were substituting limited government and traditional values for “an agenda stitched together by little else than personal grievances and performative outrage.”

. . . Democrats and RINOs desperately are looking for some keys.
The Atlantic reported, “Why Biden Just Can’t Shake Trump in the Polls.”

If Republicans nominate anyone other than Trump, that would create fresh opportunities and challenges for each side. Hunter Biden's former associate's emails with then-Vice President's staff from 2015 detail a closely coordinated relationship that blurred the line between official government work and the Biden family business and may be evidence of 'collusion,' say Republicans.
The GOP is ramping up its investigation into the Biden family's decades-long 'influence peddling scheme' as lawmakers eye opening a potential impeachment inquiry into the sitting president over his connections to his son's foreign business operations.
They are narrowing in on a series of emails between Eric Schwerin, a close business associate of Hunter's at his investment firm Rosemont Seneca, and then-VP staffer Kate Bedingfield in December 2015 regarding Hunter's Ukraine ties.

A federal judge on Wednesday ruled that Donald Trump is civilly liable for defamatory statements he made about writer E. Jean Carroll in 2019 when she went public with claims he had raped her decades earlier.
Judge Lewis Kaplan, as part of that ruling, said the upcoming trial for Carroll's lawsuit against Trump will only deal with the question of how much the former president should pay her in monetary damages for defaming her. Normally, a jury would determine at trial whether a defendant is liable for civil damages claimed by a plaintiff.
But Kaplan found that Carroll was entitled to a partial summary judgment

As part of the changing of the guard, the Disney board suggested the new CEO should take over Iger's expansive office at Disney headquarters in Burbank, California. There was just one problem. Iger had no interest in moving out. He wasn't truly leaving Disney, anyway. His succession plan allowed him to stay on as executive chairman for 22 months.

Over the weekend, the Washington Post let it slip that all is not well in Bidenomicsville. The deficit, it reports, could end up hitting $2 trillion when the current fiscal year ends in three weeks, which it describes as an “unexpected deficit surge.”
In other words, the deficit will nearly double this year, calling the lie on one of President Joe Biden’s favorite boasts about how he cut the deficit more than any president in history.
But while this apparently comes as a shock to the Post, as well as other liberal news sites that picked up on the Post report, anyone paying attention knew this was happening.
