Jake Wallin was once a small boy who sought comfort in the arms of family, terrified of fireworks that lit up the sky.
On Saturday, the Fargo police officer was remembered for growing up to be a military veteran and dedicated officer whose “final act of valor” was staring down the face of a man intent on bloodshed.
Wallin, 23, was killed July 14 when a man armed with 1,800 rounds of ammunition, multiple guns and explosives ambushed officers responding to a routine traffic crash.(Snip)Wrigley said Barakat had an “obvious motive to kill” and was driven by hate, but it was not directed toward any particular group — including the police.

Most members of the US women’s soccer team stayed silent during the national anthem before its World Cup opener Friday against newcomers Vietnam — who passionately belted their nation’s tune.
The majority of the reigning women’s World Cup champion team stared stoically ahead as the “Star Spangled Banner” blasted across New Zealand’s Eden Park arena.
Only five of the 11 players who stood on the field for the anthem — with young, aspiring players standing before them — placed their hands over their hearts, while their six teammates kept their digits clasped behind their backs, video shows. Only three USWNT players — Julie Ertz, Alyssa Naeher and Lindsey Horan — sang

Washington - Rep. Pramila Jayapal triggered an uproar when she said in Chicago last Saturday that Israel is a “racist nation,” made in this context: She spoke as she was trying to take the heat off of Rep. Jan Schakowsky, who was under sustained attack at a Netroots Nation convention panel from pro-Palestinian protesters.(Snip)The ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict is complex, and at this point in time made worse because of the policies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose governing coalition is the most extreme right-wing in Israel’s history. Criticizing Israel’s leaders is fair game; just look at the protests in Israel over Netanyahu’s anti-democracy

A London commuter has claimed he was “chased down” by a “beyond insistent” Just Stop Oil eco-fanatic this morning as he tried to go to work, in a “confrontational” stand-off captured by the city worker on his phone.
Julian Lavin was trailed by a bearded Just Stop Oil activist, who was part of a 20-strong band of protesters blocking the busy (Snip)The proposition that Mr Lavin put to the long-haired environmentalist was that he would set up a crowdfunding campaign to finance one-way tickets for Just Stop Oil activists to go to China - the world’s largest polluter - so that they could protest against fossil fuel emissions there.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau blamed the “American right-wing” for Canadian Muslims’ opposition to gender ideology and LGBTQ curriculum in K-12 education.
The video was of Trudeau speaking with the Muslim community last week at a Calgary mosque – Baitun Nur Mosque – after hundreds of protesters rallied against gender ideology in schools, chanting “Leave our kids alone.” The frustration reached a boiling point after audio surfaced of an Edmonton Public Schools teacher berating Muslim students (Snip) Edward Ahmed Mitchell, the national deputy director at CAIR, said, it was time for “liberal commentators” like MSNBC’s Psaki “to accept that Muslim parents are independent, intelligent people speaking for themselves.”

A man in Kentucky hit the jackpot after he discovered over 700 coins from the Civil War era on his rural farm.
The findings have been nicknamed the “Great Kentucky Hoard” and include a group of 1863 Double Eagles and hundreds of US gold dollars dated from 1850 to 1862, as well as a few silver coins, per Numismatic Guaranty Company, which certified the pieces.
In a YouTube video posted by GovMint, one of the biggest collectible coin marketers in the United States, the unidentified man is seen digging up the pieces of treasure — potentially worth millions — from the dirt.
“This is the most insane thing ever,” he said.

The dream season for Nikki Hiltz continued on Saturday when the runner took first place in the women’s 1500-meter race at the 2023 USATF Championships.
The surging runner, who identified as transgender nonbinary in 2021, isn’t just winning for them.
They said it was a win for the transgender community, too. “It was awesome,” Hiltz said after the win. “I think there’s so much hate right now, and specifically the bills being passed for trans youth. I feel like the LGBTQ community needed a win and there’s so many things that go through your mind in the race, and for whatever reason that was kind of in the back of my mind.”

Some parts of the city of Chicago saw nine or more inches of rain fall over the weekend, and after thousands of residents were left dealing with basement flooding, officials are seeking state disaster relief. (Snip) Johnson also called for additional funds for flood prevention, saying that climate change will only cause more severe weather events in years to come.
“Clearly the Earth is speaking to us loud and clear, where extreme weather is taking place all over the country,” he said. “Unfortunately because of some of the failed policies that have left our environment vulnerable, this is not likely the last extreme example of weather.”

Chicago (CBS) - A burglar who can't see something can't steal it either – that is the idea behind a new method of deterring crime by using fog.
As CBS 2's Tara Molina reported Tuesday, the technology behind the fog release is a brand-new way of fighting the mass retail thefts plaguing the city. (Snip) "DensityUSA's instant fog technology is pretty unique," said Mike Egel, president and chief executive officer of DensityUSA. "When a criminal breaks in after hours, the alarm deploys; the fog deploys, and in seconds, your business is going to be protected." The reason, Egel said, is because the burglars won't be able to see what they're doing.

NYPD Detective John Olsen, a former Marine, said he could have been killed at least twice after Hispanic, Asian and black cops working with him stood idly by while he was attacked twice (Snip) “He said it was because I was a military guy, but I think it was also because I was a white undercover and they were trying to get rid of me.”

Austin, Texas — Liberal policies have led to a shocking explosion in homeless camps across the state capital, with around 10,000 people living in 168 different areas that have popped up across the city, sources tell The Post.
The illegal camps have been visited and mapped by local filmmaker Jaime Hammonds and show how out of control Austin’s homeless crisis has become.
His map reveals the clandestine encampments have spread to a far greater extent than many taxpaying residents had previously realized — dotting the entire city, including near popular tourist destinations (Snip) Hammonds warns that an even bigger public safety threat could be looming as the sites remain largely unregulated
