America has been drifting toward a level of corruption incompatible with a free society and a free-market economy.
Political and economic freedom depend on the presence of a level of honesty that makes it possible for people to interact with one another with a sense of trust.
Consider recent corrupt, criminal events and their implication for the future of American culture.
An estimated $20 billion was stolen from California’s unemployment compensation program. The money was largely taken by criminals already incarcerated in California prisons using prison computers. Outside accomplices would pick up the money, according to the Sacramento district attorney I interviewed

BECOMING??? Where the hell has he been for the last 14 years since Obama got in?
Corrupted DOJ. Corrupted FBI. Corrupted IRS. Corrupted HHS. Corrupted NIH. Corrupt elections. Corrupt and compromised President Biden.
The only difference is that Americans are finally opening their eyes to the corruption, which is much deeper than any of us ever realized!

I don't remember any specifics, but I think I read long ago Uncle Newtie did his share to head our country down this path. One thing I do remember is his affinity for tree trade.

I believe the single biggest indicator of our national corruption was Obama's birth certificate, social security number, Indonesian school history, foreign student status in college, on and on, and how almost the entire country refused to see it or care. Then the entire federal government, national media, and federal agencies going after Trump, the whole Wuhan virus over-reaction, a mandated vaccine that is not a vaccine, the stolen election of 2020, the J6 protest reaction, the incarceration of Americans held without trial for at most misdemeanor trespassing, on and on. The fish rots from the head down and our head in Washington D. C. is rotten.

Big time DC public corruption is not a new phenomenon, as if you look back to the Lyndon Johnson era as a Senator, Vice-President, and as President, reportedly Johnson was involved in a huge amount of public corruption, as an example when Texas defense contractors wanted Johnson’s help they had to pay at least an initial amount to Johnson that amounted to a minimum of $50,000 through his bag man in Texas. Now when you take a close look at the reported Biden family influence peddling schemes in China and Ukraine, involving the payment of millions of dollars to Biden’s bag man, it looks like DC traditional public corruption in the DC “UniParty” continues on to this day with a President even being impeached for looking into that public corruption. Beyond that, when it comes to sexual abuse, reportedly just about any Democrat woman who worked for or who associated with Johnson reportedly was shown and felt the sexual affect of his body part that Johnson reportedly referred to as “Jumbo” including all eight of the White House secretaries who Johnson brought into the White House, in ways that made Biden performing a reported gynecological inspection of a secretary in a congressional hallway, or Clinton reportedly using his cigar in that creepy manner look like pikers.

My guess it has always been. Read about some of the scandals during the 1800s.
It's only becoming more noticeable in the last couple of decades. Not sure if we are actually becoming more corrupt or if it is just more visible thanks to the internet. It certainly became more visible since Trump was President. That's when we discovered Washington is a 'member only' club.

I read this article, and my mind wandered back to another article yesterday - a speech given by Clarence Thomas. He told of his grandfather’s words to him: “If you lie, you’ll cheat. If you cheat, you’ll steal. If you steal, you’ll kill.”
That's how quickly it happens.

Much agree with #12. I am reading a book authored in 1912 by a banking system attorney, Alfred Owen Crozier, "U.S. Money Vs. Corporation Currency. Aldrich Plan.: Wall Street Confessions! Great Bank Combine"
I am halfway through the book. Crozier makes it quite clear our federal government and banking was as crooked as a dogs leg even then. The level of corruption at that time was already off the scale. As a nation of well-meaning commoners, we were already totally screwed.

Crozier was also fiercely opposed to the creation of the National Reserve Association which preceded today's Federal Reserve. These systems effectively privatized the US Dollar. President Taft also realized that the NRA would breed corruption, so he vetoed the NRA Act that was passed by congress only to have uber lefty president Woodrow Wilson eventually sign it into law. The House of Rothschild nodded with approval.

Caligula installed his horse as a Roman Senator, but the corruption of Rome began in earnest under his predecessor, Tiberius.
It took another 400 years or so for Rome to completely collapse.
Pennsylvania installed a horse of a different color as a US Senator. But Washington DC corruption began long ago, and in earnest during and after FDR. I don't believe the US will last another 300 years. Washington DC corruption is incomprehensibly more than anyone can grasp simply because of its breadth, depth, and money. There is a lot of inertia keeping it going - every US institution has a stake in maintaining and increasing corruption. It's an interesting parlor game - how long will it take for the US to completely unravel? When is the right time to bug out?

Agree with #12. Now the stakes are higher, the power to control infinitely greater.
About 5-600 people (including alphabet agency heads, which make regulations tantamount to law) are in control of 330 million. Stroke of the pen, law of the land. Kinda cool, huh?

There are at least fifty major tribes of Native Americans that had their land systematically stolen, treaties broken by our government, the army, settlers, families murdered, buffalo slaughtered, other food source animals trapped and killed for their fur. Many of them had helped the colonists fight the British so we could build a "free" country. They were imprisoned on small plots of land where they exist today as descendants of greatness. So there was no definitive starting point to corruption, we were always that way. We came from Europe and brought it with us.

After watching Fauci fund the weaponization of covid in China, and then seeing the WEF attempt to force shut downs and masks and vaccines on the entire world....I am starting to understand why the Muslims refer to the U.S. as the great satan.
We are no longer a "Christian nation" because the Christians stayed in the churches and let the world around them go to hell.

This article brings to mind a line from the movie “Braveheart”.
“How did the ‘nobles’ become ‘nobles’? They TOOK it!”
I’m convinced there is a certain personality type that is relentless in their pursuit of wealth and power and will do whatever they have to to obtain what they want. These types are naturally drawn to politics and are fundamentally amoral. I call them psychopaths. These are the creatures that make up the political class all over the world. From time to time we normal people are forced to purge the political class for our own safety.

Of course there has always been corruption. I think Newt’s point is that corruption has now become acceptable to far too many Americans. Widespread tolerance of large and small acts of corruption will be the death of our society.

Agree with comment $ 21. Corruption is nothing new. The ancients had it figured out. Reading Plato, Dialogues on the Trial and Death of Socrates, they were familiar with it. As presently, a majority recognized it, but few objected to it.

The failure leading to the corruption and its perpetuation lies with We the People. We've been provided via the Constitution, the ways and means to stop the corruption and toss out the usurpers but too many depend solely upon the mythical political savior, whether it is Trump, DeSantis, or some other flawed human, when the real power to hew to our Constitution and punish those who seek to destroy our past, present, and future as a representative republic is strictly in the collective strength of the People. We've already seen the destruction that collective weakness has wrought. If we accept that our nation, as founded, is "doomed" without lifting so much as a pitchfork in its defense, then we will get what we deserve.

Sadly, all the rest of us get the government the Democrats and other liberals richly deserve. All I did was obey the laws, worship our creator and pay my taxes. Thanks, desk jockeys and Oval Office squatters from LBJ on up. There were only a few who did the Will of the People and the taupe hope came nowhere close. He hated us with every breath he took.
