House Republicans are set to vote on a bill that would abolish the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and introduce a national-consumption tax to replace the existing federal income-tax scheme.
House speaker Kevin McCarthy agreed to put the Fair Tax Act on the floor as one of a number of concessions he made to House Freedom Caucus members last week in a bid to secure the speakership. The bill was introduced by Representative Buddy Carter (R., Ga.) on Wednesday and has also received the support of Republican representatives Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Bob Good of Virginia, and Ralph Norman of South Carolina.

The bills that go nowhere. The Republican House is shooting its wad for show. The bills are dead on arrival. How smart is McCarthy? Dumber than a box of Arizona 19 inch ballots.

If you abolish the IRS but impose a national sales tax, who collects the money?

Good! It will not pass the Senate but slavery was not abolished in a day and this needs to be repeatedly brought up until the IRS is just a horrid memory. Think William Wilberforce.

I could be on board with it depending how much the consumption tax is and how hard it is to raise. Details.
I'd rather have them pass legislation that will likely fail than sit around doing nothing like the turtle saying "the votes arent there."

Fail or succeed, at least it’s a bill the majority of the American people can get behind. Good for them.

A national sales tax, no thanks. Those that can least afford it would be the most affected.

As long as the 16th Amendment remains in place, a consumption tax is just another tax in addition to an income tax. McCarthy is already playing games. Why not propose the 28th Amendment abolishing the 16th Amendment and thus the income tax?

A flat tax is better and manageable on all fronts. A $9000 exemption per person and 17% on incremental ordinary income and inflation adjusted capital gains will be tax neutral and fairer.

Purely symbolic, but at least be smart about it. A flat income tax per Steve Forbes is more fair. I don’t have income, I live off my savings. All that has been taxed already. Now it’s going to be taxed again?

Out of all of them the Fair Tax is the best. It would be exactly like a sales tax. You pay it, when you purchase, and you don't need to send in an IRS form. If you don't spend any money, you do not pay a tax. Those who buy those expensive yachts, will pay a large tax. No more Income tax. Simplify your life and no more IRS audits.

Since following the Fair Tax news for years, I have often thought that the idea was just too common-sense to ever get a fair hearing in Congress. If you read their website, they propose that retailers collect the tax and that the feds pay the retailers a commission for collecting the tax. Certain essentials like food and medication would be exempt from the tax.
The Fair Tax would capture revenue from people who are not now paying federal tax at all.
I'd save roughly forty hours per year by not having to prepare the return and file it.
