Costs of Wind and Solar Energy Are Skyrocketing

Original Article

Advocates of wind and solar energy have argued that the cost of those energy sources would decline over time as they are more widely adopted. That never made any sense, and it has not proved true. In fact, the cost of both wind and solar energy is destined to continue rising sharply as the massive quantities of materials they require become more expensive as a result of increasing demand, driven by ill-advised (the politest adjective I can think of) government mandates and subsidies. In fact, the cost of electricity generated by wind and solar is already skyrocketing. My colleague Isaac Orr reproduced this chart at American Experiment.

Of course the prices are rising. Wind and solar are climate alarmists’ solutions that cannot succeed. What else did anyone expect? Everything “progressives” touch turns to brown stuff.

Thee costs are misleading, as a) they are based on optimistic and un-attained (real world) capacity utilization factors, and for non-dispatchable power (like wind and solar) do not include the very real costs if backupmpower.

I did the math for my own situation in western Colorado. I will be 134 years old before a new solar/new roof replacement (twice) investment would pay for itself. But the solar companies continue their spiel at my front door. Their message to me - go solar because it feels good and economics has nothing to do with it. Such a deal, no?

I am in central California and just got my PG&E bill. 42% of the bill is for "Peninsula Clean Energy Electric Generation Charges". What a rip-off, and we sheeple have no way to combat this. There will be no future cost-reductions from these sources. I also assume that does not include energy generated by nuclear power.

Wind and Solar are dependent upon cheap fossil fuels. The steel and copper and zinc and nickel and rare earths all require thousands of tons of dirt moved to mine them. They are then trucked to a giant coal fired smelter where the impurities must be cooked away. Finally, giant heat presses must form or extrude the metals except the rare earths that must go through 20 acid baths that are boiled away leaving precipitate. And, solar must take excavated quartz and burn it and burn it and burn it in a coal smelter until only silicon is left. Without cheap fossil fuels, Wind and Solar systems cannot be made at a reasonable cost.

We drove through many fields of these damned eyesores and bird killers yesterday in Colorado and Kansas. None were turning, tens of billions of dollars worth of equipment doing nothing. Hundreds of megawatts claimed "generating capacity"..and they were using power to light their red obstruction lights, so negative value for the grid. I despise those damned things.

Keep in mind that to make the batteries for just one Model Y Tesla, you need to move 1.1M tons of dirt. That takes a lot of oil to fuel those large trucks and tractors.

It will take 1,000 years or so to mine enough cobalt/lithium/nickel to make enough batteries to power just the first generation of electric vehicles...you know, the ones that only have a lifespan of about 80,000 miles. And then where, exactly, will the cobalt/lithium/nickel be mined to power the following generation of electric vehicles? Mars, anyone? The whole idea of a nation filled with electric vehicles was the still-born pipe-dream of liberals with glassy eyes and no intelligence.

Senator Manchin’s dirty ‘Inflation Increase Act’ deal, its betrayal of coal country, army of IRS agents, and inflationary spending has paid off some of his backers and made Bill Gates very happy. Gates was described as having personally lobbied Senator Manchin and Schumer in “anticipation of a rare moment in which significant federal dollars might be secured for the clean-energy transition.” Billions of those dollars, ripped out of the hands of truck drivers, veterans and small businessmen, will have been “secured” for Gates and his ventures. When I wrote about the climate “loss and damage pact” yesterday, I noted that Climate Czar John Kerry distanced himself from the term “reparations.” The US and other developed nations have long sought to avoid such provisions that could open them up to legal liability and lawsuits from other countries. And in previous public remarks, US Climate Envoy John Kerry had said loss and damage was not the same thing as climate reparations. “‘Reparations’ is not a word or a term that has been used in this context,” Kerry said on a recent call with reporters earlier this month. He added: “We have always said that it is imperative

The latest example of this decline in intelligence is Oregon, where voters narrowly passed an anti-gun measure so ghastly that the Second Amendment has been “rendered superfluous.” Now, there’s a run on gun stores, and civil liberties advocates have begun the fight to once again “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity” and reclaim the rights the Declaration of Independence stated were “self-evident” and “endowed by our Creator.” Don’t kid yourself: It’ll be a tough sell in Oregon, where wokeness

Amid bombshell revelations that the FBI embedded numerous informants in two militia groups accused of plotting to overthrow the government on January 6, FBI Director Christopher Wray finally is facing some heat. During a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on Tuesday, Representative Clay Higgins (R-La.) angrily demanded to know more details about the use of FBI informants related to the Capitol protest. Higgins twice asked Wray whether FBI informants disguised as Trump supporters were planted inside the building even before protesters gained entry. When Wray offered his usual obfuscating tap dance about protecting sources and methods—“the suggestion that the FBI’s confidential human sources or FBI employees

Back in January of this year, the Canadian province of Quebec announced a plan to impose a tax on the unvaccinated. Officials there claimed that most of the impacts on the healthcare system were being caused by unvaccinated people and that the vaccinated should not be made to shoulder the costs. The following month, after a large outcry from the public, the plan was scrapped. But the government never gave up on the idea entirely. Some are still suggesting that the plan could be retooled and brought up for consideration again. In case that idea moves forward in a substantial way, we should take a look

Neither Murkowski nor Tshibaka, the top two candidates in the four-person race, reached the 50% threshold needed for an outright win, which meant the winner was decided by ranked-choice tabulation that was announced on Wednesday.
