The pre-pandemic world of 2019 may be gone, but there is no clear indication what will replace it. Russia is no longer a first-rate power. China’s economy has stalled. The US and Western Europe are facing an economic slowdown that may deepen into a recession in the coming months. The great powers are increasingly at odds, not only in Eastern Europe but also in the Western Pacific across the Taiwan Straits. The old ‘rule based, global world order’ is seemingly falling apart. George Friedman optimistically calls it The Storm Before the Calm, and sees a renewed and dominant United States emerging from a period of global upheaval.

“…slowdown that may deepen into a rescission…”? I thought we’ve already met that long-held economic definition, why deny it and carry Biden’s water? He does not get to decide what the meaning of “is” is.

They are destroying our energy industries in favor of obsolete wind and solar that can never provide the energy we need now to add to all the rules and regulations to fight our manufacturing along with energy so that we can't even make our own underwear in the U.S. anymore. Unless this does a 180 turn real soon, we will be the ones on bottom.

Energy requirements for humanity are always increasing, not decreasing. When asked what will we be using for energy, the answer is EVERYTHING. Any requirement to restrict energy usage is suicidal. We always need more, not less. Don't be surprised at some point in the future, energy requirements outstrip what can be provided by our planet. At that point, we better have space travel established so we can get what we need elsewhere.

"...may turn into a recession" -- stopped right there. If you can't write the truth about the most basic facts, like we are ALREADY in a recession, then I have no interest in what else you have to say.

Fernandez is usually a great read. I think he wrote this article with a bottle of Mouton Rothschild by his side... not that he's wrong, just sayin' as they say...

Trust in institutions is now the lowest it's ever been. People(some) are seeing what's really happening behind the curtains. As Trump was inaugurated, how many of us knew how treasonous and deceptive all the 3 letter agencies were? Certainly not me. My trust is so low I'm careful what I put in emails.

Take time to read the article. You might consider looking at the two references as well. The subject fits well with the "Must Read" article "We Need To Stop Calling Ourselves Conservatives."
The "old ‘rule based, global world order’ is seemingly falling apart" for good reason. We are in an era of national interests driving that global order with great influence by multi-national commercial interests. Britain and the EU are a clear example. Russia is another. The problem we have faced since 1992 is that American and Western Europeans know no other enemy - and a nemesis is ALWAYS needed. Russia will do...because we have no other apparently warlike opponent. Seventy-five years ago the West defanged the Japanese. The vastly weakened Euros went to re-establish their colonies and dependencies. India and Southeast Asia were not receptive. WW2 forced a change in their relationships with the Brits and French. Communism needed containment, and the US hopped into that fray globally with committed allies.
The US has never adapted to the post-Soviet world. It has no vision when it does things on a geo-political stage. Who created the Chinese economic parasitic-monster? To offset Russia and to create markets for our goods through development there. We dumped the Shah in favor of the Ayatollahs, to what end? We involved ourselves in Middle East intrigues and made enemies of the worst terror organizations driven by religious fervor, and then punched the proverbial tar baby in Afghanistan, and later Iraq, The record of our stupid and shortsighted meddling is very clear to those with a clear mind - much of this done by and supported by "conservatives".
If we are nearing the end of one cycle and heading into a new one, expect drastic changes - many of which "real conservatives" will not like. The US is a declining military power in terms of manpower and public support for its global "involvements". The nation is greatly "feminized", as Rush used to say. Demographics are also changing quickly. Technology is advancing quickly beyond the comprehension of most of the public. And that triggers the next cycle noted by George Friedman in "The Storm Before the Calm."

Interesting commentary as is usual from Wretchard.
But, I disagree, in that I believe that older institutions were actually run more honestly and properly than today.
We have endless numbers of atheistic, Marxists with the ethics of a snake replacing good Christians who knew that they would be judged, and therefore strove to do objective good, even though they may have fallen short many times due to human frailties. They at least could identify good and evil and work for good, no matter how ineffective they may have been.
Today many openly advocate for Satan, proudly proclaim that they have no morals, no ethics. They have NO intention to do good, in fact intend to do evil.
THAT is the root problem
