Hurricane Ian Recovery Update, Day 4

Original Article

I am going to start the Day 4 update with the golden words from dear Sharon, who eloquently writes: “…..the holding pattern for tens of thousands…..” “That’s just one thread in the word pictures presented by Sundance–a thread that is sort of a knothole in the fence…. and looking through it, there are details to be seen….confusion, uncertainty, counting the cash in one’s pocket (again), checking (again) for any possible cell phone coverage, (snip)Day 4, is exactly like all day fours I have experienced before this one. The autonomic response starts to give way to adrenalin exhaustion and human batteries need to be recharged.

Comments:

The day when internal callouses become valuable.

I have never been in a hurricane. Had seen only photos until we drove the gulf coast highway not quite one month after Camille. As horrific as the barren, topsy turvy scene was, seeing it was not “being there”. Sundance has been there. More than once. Has helped with others cleaning up. Is cleaning up his own serious damage this time. And he talks of growing up there, what the Sanibel lighthouse meant to him, how happy ihat it was spared. A very good read...

I almost posted this earlier, OP, so I’m glad you did. Sundance is a remarkable person, if his writing is any indication. He is the kind of person with whom you want to stand. My favorite line in this article: “Ignore the gremlins.” So many applications in life.

So, look at the pic in Sundance's piece. The lighthouse lives. I thought this is what America is all about? It lives. A helicopter rescuing a puppy dog. Look at it. Suppose he was your puppy dog - would you care? Dims, can you finally bury the hatchet and accept The Donald for his second term? Obie, can you just go away, build your retirement hut in Kenya, and take your Alinsky schtick with you...for now?

Sundance liberally uses the term "cracker." Having lived in Florida multiple times due to the military postings of my father and later, my own, I studied Florida history in middle school in Orlando and the best explanation for the "cracker " origin was thought to be associated with the sound of bull whips used in rounding up and herding cattle by early settlers and homesteaders. It became a derogatory term for rural white people, then all white people. In the urban areas of Texas, such rural rustics are called rednecks. I call them neighbors. As the OP mentioned about the post-Camille destruction along the Gulf Coast, I recall heading from Florida to Texas along US 90 in Southern Mississippi a month of two after Camille; my father's squadron was headed to Vietnam and many Air Force families, including mine, were forced to relocate to their home towns, as dependents weren't allowed to remain in base housing and being close to relatives was a common, if not standard, choice. Elements of the Air Wing not being deployed to Vietnam had been sent to Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS to assist in the recovery efforts. Traveling through the area where Camille made landfall near Pass Christian, MS, the clearing of debris and demolition of ruined structures was still under way. A most remarkable , awful sight came into view and has stayed with me for 53 years. Outside of Pass Christian stood half of an old multi story frame home that appeared to have been neatly cleaved in half, such that the remaining interior was exposed like the back of a child's doll house, with furniture intact. A commode in a third story bathroom was clinging to the sewer pipe holding it aloft and was clearly visible to passers-by on US 90. I was moved by both the personal tragedy and the awesome natural forces capable of such precision violence. Floridians need our help, either in labor or financially.

Abouf Florida crackers: Cowboys of Florida You might think you know the history of the American cowboy, the tales of the Wild West, but a little-known part of history comes from the earliest of all cowboys and cattle ranches of Florida. The stories of the Cracker Cowboys, made famous through the artwork of Frederic Remington and his 1895 article for Harper's New Monthly Magazine, involve cattle rustling, ranch wars, battles with Native Americans, and the larger-than-life antics of scoundrels and heroes in the scrublands, jungles, and swamps of Florida. Hundreds of thousands of Americans sought medical care after getting a COVID-19 vaccine, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data released on Oct. 3. Some 782,900 people reported seeking medical attention, emergency room care, and/or hospitalization following COVID-19 vaccination. Another 2.5 million people reported needing to miss school, work, or other normal activities as a result of a health event after getting a COVID-19 vaccine. The reports were made to the CDC’s V-safe program, a new vaccine safety monitoring system to which users can report issues through smartphones. The CDC released the data to the Informed Consent Action Network (ICAN) after being sued

The Supreme Court’s abortion decision was leaked before being issued, apparently in an effort by the liberal wing of the Court or their clerks to pressure the majority to reverse themselves. The Chief Justice in a rare press release condemned the leak, as did other conservative justices (no liberal justice did) and promised an investigation by law enforcement. That was five months ago. If the investigation concluded that it’s impossible to identify the leaker, we’re entitled to see the report. If the investigation did successfully identify the leaker, we’re entitled to know who it was. But we’ve heard crickets.

Today The Fed is holding an emergency meeting under "expedited procedures." The actions to be considered are the discount and advance rate -- in other words, interest rates. The rumored reason is that Credit Suisse may be in trouble -- specifically due to writing interest rate swaps, along with a number of other institutions which happens to include pension funds both in the UK and US, none of whom should ever be playing with levered instruments for the simple reason that leverage is everywhere and always speculative. But of course they are because nobody has ever gone to prison for using leverage as a means to evade requiring the underlying organization to fund

LONDON — King Charles III has decided not to attend the international climate change summit in Egypt next month, fueling speculation that the new monarch will have to rein in his environmental activism now that he has ascended the throne. The Sunday Times newspaper reported that the decision came after Conservative Prime Minister Liz Truss objected to Charles attending the conference, known as COP27, when she met with the king last month at Buckingham Palace. But a member of Truss' Cabinet said the government and palace were in agreement about the decision.

Remember Blinken’s initial, reflexive, response to the US sabotage of the Nordstream pipelines? It was to gaslight: Nobody benefits from this. Get it? It was all a big mystery, so don’t bother asking, Cui bono? There’s no point. Of course, as economist Michael Hudson pointed out, that bit of gaslighting wasn’t going to have much of a shelf life—If nobody benefited from the sabotage, how do you explain the incontrovertible fact that somebody did do it? This wasn’t some teen prank.

But the FDA recently refused to provide results of COVID-19 vaccine safety monitoring analysis to The Epoch Times, claiming that it could not separate the results from inter-agency and intra-agency communications, which are allowed to be withheld.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Rescuers evacuated stunned survivors on a large barrier island cut off by Hurricane Ian and Florida’s death toll climbed sharply, as hundreds of thousands of people were still sweltering without power days after the monster storm rampaged from the state’s southwestern coast up to the Carolinas. Florida, with nearly four dozen reported dead, was hit hardest by the Category 4 hurricane, one of the strongest to make landfall in the United States. Flooded roadways and washed-out bridges to barrier islands left many people isolated, amid limited cellphone service and a lack of basic amenities such as water, electricity and the internet.

WASHINGTON — Republicans are abandoning their long crusade to repeal the Affordable Care Act, making the 2022 election the first in more than a decade that won’t be fought over whether to protect or undo President Barack Obama’s signature achievement. The diminished appetite for repeal means the law — which has extended health care coverage to millions of people and survived numerous near-death experiences in Congress and the courts — now appears safer than ever. With slightly more than a month before the next election, Republicans in Congress and on the campaign trail aren’t making an issue of Obamacare.

Jonathan Capehart, a Washington Post columnist and MSNBC host, is arguing that Democrats need to retake the high ground on patriotism. It really bugs him that people associate patriotism with Republicans, while it is the Democrats who are the real patriots. Yeah right. I have no idea why anybody would think that Democrat leaders and commentators aren’t patriotic. Maybe because of statements like this: Capehart’s argument is not uncommon, of course. Democrats have been frustrated by the fact that Republicans have been more successful with patriotic messaging than they since at least the 60’s. Kennedy clearly was very patriotic with his messaging, but ever since Democrats have been associated
