The Shadow of the British Empire

“Queen Elizabeth II has died aged 96.” So announced news programs the world over. Monarchs give their names to eras, labels that historians assign to stretches of collective memory. Elizabeth gave hers to nearly three generations; she became queen in 1952, when Harry Truman was still president. The unchanging label gave the illusion of continuity to a period of immense change. The Cold War, its hopeful aftermath and eventual collapse into new geopolitical rivalries — all the seas of trouble — were all encompassed by this single linguistic device. For decades she seemed permanent, and her passing is a sign of our own inherent mutability.

Comments:

Queen Elizabeth never put a foot wrong. She is worthy of the honors.

And "Charles III" isn't even the shadow of a king. He's more like the penumbra, which is just the outer edge of the shadow.

Agree about Queen Elizabeth and Charles. The picture of him in the clown suit beclowned him. Maybe he’ll rise to the occasion. I guess we’re all clowns but possibly salvageable. So far none of the merit is his own, just accident of birth. Maybe he will earn some.

I think Queen Elizabeth did get put her foot wrong once - backing the independence of Rhodesia and supporting Mugabe against the advice of her prime minister Margaret Thatcher. She, in effect and but intentionally, sold out the productive white farmers for what - Dictator Mugabe and black African independence?

It's unfortunate the so-called academics never study why the British Empire rose to such prominence. Perhaps it was a focus on establishing civilization where it barely existed.

That empire "built on the backs of black and brown peoples" gave them opportunities that most failed to grasp. Most former British possessions were fortunate to have ever come under the British crown. Ask Hong Kong. India is another prime example. Imagine had India been left "Indian" with its various states and royals, occasional religious strife, and multitude of "laws", not to mention its dozens of languages. It is doubtful that a man like Gandhi would have been successful, the idea of personal freedoms taking root. The cold fact is that when the British granted independence to any one of dozens of countries forming the Commonwealth, the "natives" made a mess of themselves, and continue to do so, particularly economically.

Yes indeed, #6. Of course she absolutely did make mistakes like everyone else does. I do think it is fair to say she never put a foot wrong when it came to public etiquette and performance of duties. At this time of mourning, I think it’s perfectly fine if some media are overdoing it a bit. I feel it is alright to cover Elizabeth with all the honors possible for 70 years on the throne. These are very uncertain times for the UK. It has been a very long time we have seen the UK people so united in love and reverence.

Biden ruins a perfectly decent 9/11 speech 2 replies

Listening to Joe Biden give a speech always makes me feel a bit nauseated, so I try to read his speeches. The White House website, which does a good job of preserving his every official utterance, allowed me to read his remarks on Sunday at the Pentagon's ceremony observing the 21st anniversary of the day al-Qaeda terrorists attacked America. It was almost a decent speech, right up until the end, when he dragged in political correctness and partisan politics — and that spoiled the whole thing. Biden's speechwriters lack talent, and he is no orator. Nevertheless, three quarters of the "Remarks by President Biden at 9/11 Memorial Ceremony"

On August 8, for the first time in U.S. history, the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided the residence of a former president, Donald J. Trump. That home invasion invites another first for America: a sudden and thorough search of FBI headquarters, with bureau bosses and their lawyers barred from the premises and from contact with anyone inside. Under these conditions, a crack team of independent investigators, deploying the latest forensic and high-tech tools, could be turned loose on all FBI files and records. The first thing this team might uncover is recent FBI action in a high-profile whistleblower case. Back on February 21, 2020, Philip Haney,

Germany’s economy and climate minister has angrily lashed out at Angela Merkel’s party, accusing it of being responsible for “16 years of energy policy failure”. While the ongoing gas crisis across Europe gets steadily worse, political tensions in Germany appear to be growing, with the country’s economic and climate minister, Robert Habeck, angrily lashing out at his political rivals in the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the party of former chancellor Angela Merkel. Despite having been warned by then-President Donald Trump that relying on Russia

On the menu today: You may have heard about that Democratic county official in Nevada whom police have arrested on suspicion of murdering a reporter. But you probably didn’t hear about the Democratic campaign consultant in New Jersey who pled guilty to conspiracy and murder-for-hire earlier this year. And only those who closely follow politics are likely to have heard about the Democratic mega-donor from California who lured men into his apartment and injected them with methamphetamine in exchange for sex, leading to two fatal overdoses. I think we’re starting to see why some in that party were so enthusiastic about the notion of abolishing the police. Last month,

"For here we are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it." That's Thomas Jefferson, the Father of the University of Virginia, describing his beloved institution's creed to English historian William Roscoe. I think it is also a fitting description of the American Thinker community, who often tussle with difficult stories because that is where the truth takes us. Several members of the community recently focused my attention on the plight of J6 political prisoner Jonathan Mellis, who has already spent nineteen months in the American Gulag for the "crime"

Because most people don’t know a farmer personally anymore, everyone should realize that they don’t make piles of money producing our food. A good year can be followed by three bad ones, and 2022 has been a burden. Everyone will feel the pinch in continued food price increases and shortages at the store. As bad as the agricultural outlook is in America, it is far worse in Europe. Cast your mind back to Thanksgiving in 2020 and 2021, when J. Edgar Fauci was telling us that we could only have something like six people over for dinner, preferably eating outside, and all socially-distanced by at least twelve turkey-lengths, or 0.2 furlongs or something. Someone promptly produced a meme of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer saying, “No one is going to tell me how many people I can have for dinner on Thanksgiving!” Tasteless and sick, to be sure. Also pretty funny. And not really new. I remember that after the initial shock and horror of Dahmer’s crimes were discovered 25 years ago, the comics got to work with tasteless jokes

Georgia Democrats are wringing their hands about the lackluster performance of their gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams, in her long-anticipated rematch with incumbent Republican Gov. Brian Kemp. They kept their worries to themselves until the New York Times ran a story last Wednesday that highlighted complaints by local Democrats that she hasn’t bothered to reach out to crucial constituencies. It appears that Abrams, having been showered by obsequious media coverage since Kemp defeated her in 2018, was overconfident about her chances of beating him this year and took her base supporters for granted.

That Queen Elizabeth II passed away this week was a surprise only in the sense of the day it happened. Nothing against the Queen, who always seemed like a nice, lovely person, but she was 96. When someone is 96 years old the days are numbered. One day we might cheat death, or find ways to postpone it much longer than nature dictates currently, but that day isn’t today. So, sad as it is for family and friends of anyone who passes away at any age, surprise isn’t a word that leaps to mind to describe it.

The other four defendants are Ramzi Binalshibh, Mustafa Ahmed al-Hawsawi, Walid bin Attash and Ammar al-Baluchi. Attorneys for the defendants reportedly say they would be willing to enter a guilty plea in exchange for taking the death penalty off the table, as well as for getting treatment for alleged torture they experienced while in CIA custody.
